'I ii, f DEDICATION OF THE 1979 SHAW BEAR For his words of encouragement, dedication and lengthy serviceg for his faith in Shaw University, for his concern for the welfare of Shaw University, and for being there when we needed him, the Bear Yearbook Staff has unanimously selected Mr. Mack Sowell for the dedication of the 1979 Shaw Bear. Mr. Mack Sowell is a resident of Selma, N.C. He is a 1964 graduate of Shaw University from which he holds a B.A. degree in English. While a student at Shaw, he was president of the S.G.A. in 1964. He also held membership on the Shaw Bear Staff, English Club, school newspaper, Dramatic Club and Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities for 3 years. In his career at Shaw, he has served as career placement counselor, residence hall director and co- director of student life. From 1973 to the present, he has held the position of Director of Student Life and Development. His professional career includes an Adult Teacher Training Certificate at N.C.S.U. in 1968, teaching French and English in the public schools of Johnston County H964-701, leading inservice workshops in language arts and foreign lan- guage for Johnston County Schools in 1967. He was elected to the city council of Selma, N.C. in 1969 and was the first black to hold that position. Mr. Sowell, or Dean as we best know him, was listed among the Outstanding Men of America in their 1973 edition. For the Shaw University Family, this still holds true today. He is married to the former Mary E. Womack and they have two sons, Malcolm and Reuben. Dean Sowell: The Yearbook Staff as well as the entire Shaw Family, would like to extend special thanks for your dedication, loyalty, unending committment and leadership to Shaw University. HONORABLE MENTIONS TO . . . Mr. 8: Mrs. H.B, Caple The Student Activities Committee Dr. O.A. Dupree Mrs. Willie H. High Mr. Thalmus Rasulala The Football Team Dr. Iohn A. Flemming Mr. Charles Mitchell The Library Staff and We dedicate these pages to Dean Sowell and to you, the CLASS OF 1979 . . . Finally, we dedicate it to GOD! i 1 5 r I P R M E 5 E I S D S E A G E N T Sl Dr. Stanley Smith, President To The Class Of 1979: This year's production of The Shaw University Bear Yearbook is of particular significance to Shaw University and to me. It marks, hopefully, a turning point in the long and glorious history of Shaw University. This is my first year as President of this illustrious University. I assumed this position with the firm belief and conviction that Shaw will be one of the outstanding institutions of higher education in the future. This can only be done with your help and cooperation and those of all members of the Shaw Family. I am, therefore, deeply appreciative of your aim and objective to maintain quality production of this issue of the yearbook at reduced cost. Shaw's commitment is similar. It aims for quality edu- cation with a real concern for fiscal accountability and responsibility. Your objective of achieving excellence in the production of this issue, also parallels the University's thrust for excellence in performance and achievement by students at graduation time. Shaw's educational commitment will be to take students where they are and move them to an exit point of excellence in perfor- mance with a mastery of the basic academic skills but structured in the direction of meaningful career goals. This concern for career goals for our students is again in keeping with the historical roles and functions of Shaw, which started out as a professional school with degree granting power in the areas of Theology, Medicine, Law, Pharmacy, etc. For these reasons, this year's issue of the yearbook has commemorative and symbolic signifi- cance and I am very proud to be associated with it. The search for knowledge hasn't been an easy quest for black people in the American society. Crisis situa- tions of all types have presented it- self as objects of frustration pitted against our struggle for achieve- ment. To let such frustrations stifle our dreams would be the greatest Leon Brooks Hosea Newsome Ierome Iohnson Irvin Bradley Nilous Avery Vice President, Internal Affairs Vice President, External Affairs Business Manager Associate Iustice Chief Iustice denouncement of self and our black spawned heritage. We are the pride of our families, the heart of a race still in search for answers to many problems, and the soul of a people whose persistent quest for total free- dom and equality will not be quenched until the actualization of this goal is achieved, You, as students and potential workers, must eternally live with the fact that your black heritage will often play a major role throughout your lives. The knowledge that stu- dents have at hand here at Shaw University is geared to help them function adequately within the business sanctum. However, stu- dents must be aware that their own growth of maturity is needed to fur- ther enhance their chances profi- ciency within this world. Thus, I leave the decision within your hands. True success comes to those that have genuinely sought to suc- ceed. l l l 1 I l I I l J. l Q ll l l 'l l 5. l I it 3 ll l ll I I i l l l l Q l I l M V A l. Xos M X Aga! 4212? We began with a staff of about forty persons, and within a month's period, there remained three: the editor, Barbara Wrightg Anthony Christopher, the ex- ecutive editor, and the associate editor, Iackie Young. Despite the fact that our staff had decreased fsmilej, we still stuck to our theme, When you're good, peo- ple notice ! And we were noticed, and joined by a few other kind souls, which now makes it possible for you to read this passage. Anthony Christopher ef! Iackie Young . This book was once at a standstillg however, it has nf been produced better later than never.
