PiaiEsibiENT's MiEMoRANbiUM TO THE CLASS OF 1978: It was Mortimer Adler who said, A COLLEGE education does not make an educated man. Education is a never-ending process. lt is a quest, a journey, a pilgrimage. Shaw University, we hope, has been a station along the pilgrimage route. lts objectives have been to widen your experience, to encourage creative thinking, to teach you how to organize knowledge and use it in meaningful action, to motivate you to continue the quest, and to let you know character and knowledge go hand in hand. And now you are on the verge of entering the next phase of your educational experience: what some refer to as the real world. All is not harmony between the world of the real world and the world of the ideal to which you were introduced in this academic community. There has been and will continue to be conflicts at many points. Your educational pilgrimage will continue or will be arrested as you use or fail to use wisdom in choosing between right and wrong, good and evil, or, as sometimes the case might be, between the lesser of two evils, Your educational objectives will be advanced or stymied as you show the courage or lack of courage to do that which is best for the common good. Each time one objective is reached, set up another objective. Always have some goals up among the stars that will keep your pilgrimage a continuing journey. Remember with the poet Browning, A man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for? And, by all means, make liberation-liberation of mind, spirit and body-from any shackles, the main aim of your continuing education. As Epictetus,a great philosopher, so wisely put it: Man has declared that only the free man can be educated. but God has decreed that only the educated man can be free. I 17 -
