F 1 SHAW UNIVERSITY wi 7 RALIIGH, Norm Cnnourm 27602 Dea r Fellow - Students: Higher education is concerned with clarifying the muddy human situation in which we all are part: what happens to us, the horizons that beckons, and the complexities and realities which either shape us or we Shape them. The end is that we embrace, perceive and embody truth. 'Since Pontius Pilate's historic washing of his hands in order to symbolize that whatever happened the onus was on somebody other than himself, truth has most often been crucified as a. result of evasion of duties and pussyfooting as to responsibility. The one lesson we should have learned as a result of that important historical moment is that truth still shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot put it out! Out of the historic roots of our faith comes the realization that education is a means of truth. For 110 years, Shaw has been on the -main avenue of educating men and women to think and to reason, be imaginative, creative and inventive, sit at the fount of wisdom whose sources flow from all peoples, ages and climes, and exercise that independence of judgment so necessary for independence of actionp We can all vouch that in this respect Shaw is a mainstreaniuniversity and not a side-tracked one. It is not now and never has been a stronghold of sterile theory and procedural worship. It looks now and has always looked for exacting methodologies as means to open up situations, disciplines and experiences so that truth can be illuminated within those contexts. Illumination of truth whether embodied in ideas or structures and individuals or collectives so that truth becomes incarnate is what original thinking and good teaching are about. It is, therefore, illumination and incarnation of The Truth that sets us free. It is freedom from fear of the powers and forces of this world and all possible worlds. It is likewise freedom toward developing ourselves to the highest potential possible so that we may'give our best in terms of mind, spirit and possessions to those who need us most. The standard is the grace of God already broken through into our persons and works which assures us promise, hope and fulfillment. Our obedient response means throwing off narrowrnindedness and putting on broadmindedness, secure in the knowledge that we are in the compulsive power of a new affection. When this happens we are educated whether we receive certification or not. incerely you x' , , I 1 ,f K, Z fl fl f - filq' flkaczxc Lx, w 1' IJ. A chie Hargraves X' 'gnupg , President 1 if 23 E x
