FOR WA RD The purpose ofthe 1974 yearbook is to illustrate the pattern ofa college students life. Elements such as academics, social lUe, and sports are among the aspects covered in this book. lt was the task ofthe stajto make the book one that would be meaningful to all. We, the members of the staff wish to say to the student body, keep on pushing , continue to make Shaw University one ofthe best. We can do this Uwefollow this poem. . . Try , . As I sit here now and reminisce Of the many .years gone by, One thought is vivid in my mind A You always have to try. Sometimes you'll have to walk the race, Again you'll have to run. ' Many times you'llstumble, trip, orfall, But .still you must go on. For the road is bumpy and the road is rough, And it 's sometimes dark as night. And the load is heavy and thejourney long, And the blows come left and right. But with courage as your weapon A ndfaith as your shield, Youllfght many, many battles, But never have to yield. Yesterday is far behind you now, And today isjilled with glee. Now step out into tomorrow To meet your destiny. The three of them alike would have played a part in shaping our 1973-74 academic year. However, before they could begin, they passed away. All three of them seeked to reach the highest that lUe had to oger, either intellectual! y, spiritually, or socially. In some way or other a contribution was made. The Yearbook Staff 7 We have come to the end of another year. Seniors are moving on to professional heights and higher educational levels, and the underclassmen are striving to reach the goal that the graduating seniors have already reached. We, the members of the yearbook staff have put many hours of work into this book so that you, our college peers, faculty and staff will be able to have something literary and pictorial to refer back to in thefuture years. It is only wished that more students would participate in the yearbook activities, so that it can really be a vital part ofeach individual enrolled here at Shaw University. However, realizing that a yearbook is important to the university, the goal was set, and with a minimal amount ofstajfthe book was completed. At this time I would like to thank all students that were active participants on the staff I would like to give special thanks to our two photographers, Mtume Babatunde and George Flemming. We sincerely hope that we have been instrumental in setting before you a vision of what is, what ought to be, and what can be, and in educating you properly to decide the role you will play in its implementation. For where people have vision and move to realize it. they thrive and prosper. We have had great tirnes together. Oftentimes there has been a critical mass of time, temperature and prog ram. Most important is that we have brought out each other's authenticity and demonstrated that regardless of so-called handicaps the people are inherently educable. Shaw has tried to be a center of learning existing as a rich mix of people of diverse talents who think and act in a community of scholars. Some of you came as tortoises, slowed down for a while, because your academic preparation was not up to par. You moved at a slow but steady pace in the beginning so that you could walk, later run, and now as graduates you are getting ready to mount wings as eagles and soar intel- lectually and morally. Others ot you carrie as hares, already facile of mind, adept at speaking and writing, and so skilled at manipulating verbal and quantitative synibols that you needed only polishing of your rnind and spirit by other minds and spirits. Shaw served as a cool medium for fusing tortoises and hares together and putting them through a process designed to make a unique kind of graduateg discerning and able, conceptually bold, historically rooted, methodologically sharp and socially sensitive. We have tried to place emphasis not so much upon what you brought when you came, but upon what you now take away as you leave, and what you have to give to the communities to which you go. Go with God. Sincerely yours, J. REQ 5 i iss, Another class has graduated from Shaw L'niversity, thus adding another chapter into the history of our Black and grand institution. I wonder, though, what will my fellow graduates be doing in a jew years? Were they, are they, or will they be in the process of developing an undying love for our people, ' or were they, are they, or will they be in the process of escaping from the Black eomnzunity and thus neglecting their responsibility to Black people. We must realize that your first duty is to your people, and your second duty is to yourself It is not about what you want to do, but about what needs to be done in order to survive. With what I and others ternz The Pactjication Era for Blacks coming to a quick halt, Black people will need you nzore no w than they have in the past. To the remaining students, let me ask sonze questions. When will we move from the stage of complaining to one of Constructive criticism, documentation, and Constructive action? This year the SGA presented you with the opportunity to do just that, and undoubtedly the SGA or some other organization will present the opportunity again at some time or other We will you deal with it or will you just complain once again. I am happy to have had the honor to be your obedient servant, Mtume Babatunde 146 LIFE UN THE 147 ffl f' A f? TNFEQPW Q. Only next year and then it will be all over: or will it?? We really can 't believe, Seniors at last and then out into the world to seek our fame and fortune. We will strive to reach our goal, that little piece of sheep skin, called a diploma, that will open doors and hang neatly on the wall in our homes. I think we are going to make it.
