TO THE CLASS OF 1973: We have mutually reinforced each other in that our questions have been right questions as we sought together to create an adequate vehicle for the educational enterprise. In our years together, it is true that we were constrained by the lack of sufficient funding. At no time, though, was there a lack of ideas, the willingness to take responsibility, and the ability to move ahead with what we had to do. We tackled problems, shared experiences, and attempted to create a stronger sturcture for those coming after us. It is my hope that by our mutual efforts history will report that we established a firm footing from which our successors were able to soar. My wife and daughter join men in sending each of you the warmest of personal greetings and in affirming the hope that you may find deep personal satisfaction and great success in your chosen vocation, Sincerely yours, ' l. POOR, BLACK and DISADVANTAGED, NO! YOUNG, GIFTED and BLACK, YES! I ! Stigmas usually follow people throughout their lives if they are not careful. The Shaw University Bear is also helping in the cancellation of old Shaw University stigma. i am poor, black and disadvantaged i .im poor. i was uprooted from the ghetto. i came here because any place was better than the streets. they picked me off the streets. the agonizing pains of poverty caress my very soul. i have no choice. i am poor. i will sell my very soul for a better life. poverty has drained me of ambition. iwill always remain poor. WHY? iam poor, black and disadvantaged i am black, sandwiched between poor and disadvantaged has robbed me of pride. i am becoming NEGRO. black - to me - is a symbolic representation of apathy. i cannot help myself. i am the darker brother. i grow weak from my own oppression. iam poor, black and disadvantaged i am disadvantaged. i no longer have a place i am worldliness. i have no right to sit in the seat of comfort and pride. my life strings are pulled by someone who related to me in such a way that relation is tokenism. there is no hope for me. iam fading into nothing. iam poor, black and disadvantaged NO! I AM YOUNG, GIFTED AND BLACK I AM YOUNG. I THRIVE ON THE CONCEIVING AND IMPLEMENTING OF YOUNG IDEAS. YOUNG IS A STATE OF BEING THAT EXISTS ON THE NEW, THE BETTER, AND THE FRESH IDEALS OF AN OLD OUTDATED SYSTEM. I MEET THE OLD WITH OUTRAGE. IT IS. A NEW DAY AND WORLD AND I KNOW MY RIGHTFUL PLACE NOW. I CANNOT BE PUSHED BACK. I AM A PART. I WILL TAKE PART AND ANYTHING ELSE I FEEL I DESERVE. I AM REACHING NEWER AND HIGHER HEIGHTS. IAM YOUNG, GIFTED AND BLACK I AM GIFTED. I HAVE A RIGHTFUL PLACE AT THE TOP. I AM AT THE TOP. I CATER ONLY TO MY OWN SUPERIORTY. I NO LONGER HAVE OBSTACLES AND BARRIERS WITH WHICH TO ASSOCIATE MYSELF. I DESTROY AND CREATE. I AM THE BETTER BROTHER. IAM YOUNG, GIFTED AND BLACK I AM BLACK. I REPRESENT ALL THAT IS BLACKNESS. I CAN HELP MYSELF -- AND OTHERS. I BELONG. MY FUTURE IS VITAL FOR THE SURVIVAL OF A WORLD: THIS WORLD. I REPRESENT THE MOTHER COUNTRY: AFRICA. IAM TRUE TO MY OWN BLACK CONVICTIONS. TOGETHERNESS. BROTHERHOOD. POWER. SUPERIORITY. SYNONOMOUS OF A PROUD PEOPLE. IAM YOUNG, GIFTED AND BLACK The innoble demise of the poor, the black, and the disadvantaged has created and opened up new avenues for the Shaw University Family. Unity has cancelled the, apathetic revolution of the poor, the black and the disadvantaged. There is a new revolution involving the body - YOUNG, the mind - GIFTED, and the soul - BLACK. We have come through and have been a distinctive part of a history with pride and dignity. We will remain that way because YOUNG, GIFTED and BLACK IS REAL. General james Burns 7
