The new awareness of black men ,finds us 'fighting back. We are waging our defense tlzrouglz armed insurrec- tion, legal interpretation. passive demonstration. achieve- ments, and knowledgeable preparation. It is to tlzis latter attribute, knowledgeable preparation, that Shaw Universitv strives to remain a vanguard. N S1 .- ,mute i 1. f Honorable Angie Brooks Class of 1949 - Shaw University Dedication Message When the General Assembly of the United Nations convened in St?tember 1969, the jirst lady president since Madame Pandi in 1953 was presiding. he Honorable Angie Elizabeth Brooks had become president ofthe General Assembhz for the 24th session. A close Fiend said, She started with nothing, but look at her now. Two fiends, one the pastor of her Baptist church in Liberia, and the other the ministers old schoolmate who was then president of Shaw Universiy, played an important role in how she came to Shaw. he cler man persuaded t e president to grant Angie a work scholarship on her promise tight she would do almost anything to finish school. At Shaw she earned her way by cookinlg, washing dishes, scrub ing floors, doing laundry, and just about any other chore t at would assist her through the University. She graduated Fam Shaw with a degree in social science and earned two more degrees at the University of Wisconsin, one in law and the other a masters in political science. She spent two more years studying international law in London, En land it 1954 Miss Brooks was called upon to dfill a vacancy in the Liberian delegation to the United Nations. She readil com lie and thus began her distinguished career in that body. During her rise to fdlme sllle never forgot Shaw University, her first step in these United States. She has returned many times to her alma mater. On a 1963 visit she joined a sit in and helped call national attention to desegregation ejjforts in Ralei h. ' Shawgrecently awarded her an honorary Doctor of Laws tLL.D.j, for she has depicted everything worthwhile in a Shaw student.
