THE SHAW DIVINITY SCHUOLT FACULTY 4. ilu Rabbi Leo .l, Stillpass Dr. Charles W. Ward L . .. Acting Dean. Divinity School-The Rev, James Z. Alexander STUDENTS .lohn D Ellis James Ray John Prince, Jr, David Vaughn HISTORICAL STA TEMENT Shaw University's School of Religion is rooted in the history of the institution, which was founded on Decem- ber I, l865, when a theological class was formed in the old Guion Hotel, situated where the State Museum now stands. Dr. Henry Martin Tupper formed the class after being honorably discharged from the Union Army after three years as a Private and as a Chaplain. Shortly after the formation of the theological class, Dr. Tupper saw the need for expanding his activities. With 5500, which he had saved while in Army, he purchased a lot at the corner of Blout and Cabarrus Streets and there erected a two-story structure. With the help ofa faithful few followers, he built this edifice with timber prepared from trees that they themselves felled in the forests. The Raleigh Institute. as it was called. was one of the largest structures ofits kind in the city. ln l870, the present site of Shaw was purchased. It was then called the General Barringer Estate. The name Shaw Collegiate Institute followed in l87l and remained until l875 when the school was chartered and incorporat- ed under the name of The Shaw University. lts funda- mental objective was stated in its motto: Pro Christo Humanitate fFor Christ and Humanity. The lirst Bachelor of Theology QB.Th.J degrees were awarded to four students in l900. Thirty-three years later, April l5. l933, the School of Religion was established by act ofthe Board of Trustees of The Shaw University, enlarging the work of the Theo- logical Department. The School olTered the Bachelor of Divinity degree on a six-year course of study, combining two additional years ol' study with the four-year B.A. and B.S. programs.
