The class of 1963 presents to you a picturesque view of our most treasured moments during the past four years at Shaw University by taking you on a tour of the campus, a campus which we now bid adieu. The .Senior class has worked hard and diligently to uphold the ideals and principles of this institution. We feel that as time moves on, the underclassmen will keep the spirit of Shaw University alive, for we will always treasure the hard- ships, as well as the times of fun, that we have shared here. In years to come, we hope that the underclassmen will look upon this book as an incentive to strive zealously, cour- geously and intelligently until their ambitions are realized. We present this Bear with the faith that a better self, a better community, a better nation, and ultimately a better world may be developed by those who may have gained incenti ' e from the ideas contained herein. If this is done, then the class of 1963 feels that the Bear shall have served its purpose, and with this we can leave our underclassmen, faculty, and staff with pleasant memories and a brighter future. Thy sons revere thy name. Long shall thy works be proud, Undinimed thy Flame. Time shall thy praises sing, Glory repay thy tears. And loud thy praises ring Through all the years. Nobel thy hallways, Nobler thy grassy plain. Nobler the hearts of men Where thou dost reign, All we who love thy name, Stout hearts that shall not fail, All rise and loud proclaim Alma Mater Hail! WITH THE SPIRIT OF THE BEARS Fair golden thoughts and lo ely works ' ' away, away from Shaw do call, For we are still thy bears, And working and reaching tall. You ' ll call and we will answer. We will strive for truth and enriched ideas in life, and even hope — To make our success conform with the years. Our hearts so bravely made, Force us to face life as Shaw U Bears, Striving and conquering undismayed, Still holding our Alma Mater fair. The honor shall fill shaw U with care; An honor that is resplendent With the dignity of an enriched air That makes Shaw ' s heart independent. We shall strive torn ake Shaw a blooming flower, Regretting as we leave that we cannot stay. We go with a knowledge and power here gained To assume our roles in a world now war and hate defamed. Though victory and achievement be ours in the end, On Shaw University our hearts descend. Anna Mozelle Davis 56 A Hopeful Adieu The. -The. Despite their classification as freshmen, and the sophomoric designation of greenhorns akin to rustics entering the city for the first time, each enrolling freshman seemed eager for knowl- edge. Although each of these 237 persons sought to make person- al adjustment to his new social milieu — college life — we readily realized that such adjustment could be facilitated through unity and coordination of eflTorts. Seeking to effect this unity, one of the first undertakings of this now college- oriented group was to structure itself into a functional entity. Thus did we organize as the Freshman Class and elect as oflScers the following persons: Fred Marshall, president; Joan Pace, vice president: Gloria Freeman, secretary and Hattie White, treasurer. Our Student Council Representatives were Elaine Maddox and Eleanor Nunn. Additional guidance came from our faculty advisor, Dr. Marguerite Adams. Amid the hustle and bustle of readying a float for the Homecoming Parade and eyeing the exuberance of returning alumni, we stood aghast but joyful. The Homecoming Parade pursued its course down Fayetteville Street en route to the game site — Chavis Park — we could but rejoice over being an intricate part of such an activity. Reigning as Miss Freshman was Janice House accompanied by her two attend- ants, Virginia Avery and Helen Miller. Our outstanding athletes were J. C. Carr, James Korne- gay, James Long, and George Samuel. They represented our class well on the football team. On the basketball team were Jaines Fox, Robert Parker and Kermit West. Roy Day, Thomas Harriston, William Hartsfield, and Fred Marshall were on the baseball team. Marcella Boone, Josephine Dancy and Gloria Freeman represented our class as cheerleaders. With a song in their hearts, many of our classmates joined the Chorale Society. Included among these were Mamie Bel- ton, LaVern Blackwell, Marie Bond, Yvonne Edwards, Janice House, Sandra Miles, Joann Reedy, Doreatha Williams, How- ard Anderson, Timothy Boyer, Patrick Davis, and Herbert Freeman. Love for the dramatic, and zeal for expression through the theater, led many members of our class to demonstrate their talents as actors. Those joining the Shaw Players were : Y on- ne Edwards, Janice House, Mattie Leggett, Joann Pretty, Bruce Eure, Fred Marshall and Judah Person. Strning to excel in scholarship, we constantly asked the questions, Mathematics, Chemistry, English — is it possible to master them all? Well, we did, and some found themselves scholars of worth. Ellen Spivey and Rydonia Henderson re- ceived scholarships for maintaining the highest academic averages in the Freshman Class. Joann Reedy received the Delta Sigma Theta Scholarship. Louis Hall was granted the North Carolina Congress of Parents and Teachers Scholarship. We competently found our way through the maze of green in our freshman year. Having endured the rigors of our freshman year, we as sophomores, were now a vital part of Shaw. Class officers of our sophomore year were: Judah Per- son, president ; Eleanor Nunn, vice president ; Elaine Maddox, secretary; James Dew, treasurer; Joan Pace, parliamentarian; Judith Moore and Anne Squires, Student Council Represent- atives. Judith Moore represented our student body at the meet- ing of the Student Non-violent coordinating committee in Atlanta, Georgia. The Purpose of the meeting was to com- pare activities of the various protest groups in the South. On each college campus there will invariably be found young ladies who will be referred to as Queens, Sweet- hearts, and Miss — . The lovely, Kayreitha High was chosen Miss Sophomore. Here attendants were LaVern Blackwell and Joan Williams. Janice House reigned as Miss Basketball, and Yvonne Edwards became Sweetheart of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. From Alpha to Omega the Greek-letter organizations of Shaw University represent a major portion of campus extra- curricular activities. With a common subscription to a spirit of brotherhood, the fraternities and sororities work hand- in-hand in promoting activities beneficial to the welfare of others. Many members of our Sophomore Class pledged in the Freshman year to their preferred Greek groups, and be- stirred themselves for crossing those burning sands into Greekland. Twek-e young women entered Alpha Kappa .Alpha Sorority. They were Constance Alston, Eselyn Andrews Clay, Patricia Cooper, Darlene Davis, Inez Dean, Yvonne Edwards, La- Vern Blackwell, Laverne Godette, Regina Johnson, Mattie Leggett, Elaine Maddox. and Helen Miller, Four sophomore women entered the portals of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. They were Marcella Boone, Joan Pace, Dorothy Williams, now Mrs. McKinney, and Velma Adams, Queen Plemmer, Jo- ann Pretty, now Mrs. Dunn, Anne .Squires, and Joan Williams, now Mrs. Goodson, comprised the four sophoinore members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority. The foursome of Annie Bul- lock, Mozelle Davis, Betty Newsome, and Ellen Spivey entered Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. Entering Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity were Donald Bow- man, Thomas Harriston, James Mathis, and Mitchell McGuire. James Fox and Herbert Freeman became members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Percy High and Charles Mi- chael were welcomed in the fold of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, 38 and Stafford Bullock joined the ranks of Phi Beta Sigma. Sixteen members of our sophomore class made Honor Roll. We were proud because the majority of the students making the Honor Roll were sophomores. Ellen Spivey and Louis Hall held top places in scholarship and received the Sopho- more Awards. Under the leadership of Judah Person and Stafford Bul- lock, president and ice president respectively, we set out im- mediately to come to grips with the roles which must neces- sarily accompany our newly acquired status. Many class re- sponsibilities were distributed among the following officers: Stella Little, secretary; Elaine Maddox, assistant secretary; Yvonne Edwards, treasurer; Louis Hall, business manager; Velma Adams, assistant business manager: Joan Pace, parlia- mentarian; Eleanor Nunn and William Hartsfield, Student Council Representatives. Doris Monk was chosen Miss Junior, with Elaine Mad- dox and Joann Pretty Dunn as her attendants. Velma Adams, Annette Glee, Louis Hall, Regina Johnson, and Ellen Spivey were chosen as Junior Counselors, the real aides and friends to freshmen. Again Judith Moore represented our student body at the meeting of the Student Non-violent Coordinating committee in Atlanta, Georgia. Some members of our class, though now in their third year of college, became allied with Greekland. Entering Delta Sigma Theta Sorority were Kayreitha High and Eleanor Nunn. Joann Reedy was welcomed in Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority. Charles Earle and Wendell Edwards became mem- bers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Juniors who were members of the choir proved a definite asset in this school year, as their many voices blended with others in presentation before the United Nations. Ellen Spivey and Yvonne Edwards held the reins in schol- arship this year, and thus received the Junior awards. Our year was climaxed with an Enchanted Fountain Prom, given in honor of the Class of 1962. Despite the con- tinued reprisals of Stafford Bullock, now acting class presi- dent, the dilligence of Bruce Eure, chairman of the Prom Committee, and the small number of seniors in attendance at the prom, the Junior class could assuredly boast of a job well done. And now comes September, 1962. This time we enter the portals of Shaw University not as frightened freshmen, wise sophomores, or ranking juniors, but as sophisticated seniors. Leading us as officers are Stafford Bullock as president; Bruce Eure as vice-president: Stella Little, secretary; Mattie Leggett, assistant secretary; Joan Pace, treasurer; La Verne Blackwell, business manager; Wendell Edwards, assistant busi- ness manager; Janice House and Eleanor Nunn, student council representatives. At the time of this writing there is still another semester of academic accomplishments to be completed. It does not yet appear as to what that semester will bring, but of attain- ment already reached we can say with certainty that seniors are making themselves felt in numerous positions, for Charles E arle is president of the student body, while Ellen Spivey holds the enviable title of Miss Shaw. At Homecoming time La- Vern Blackwell reigned as Miss S lior, and was attended by Josephine Dancy and Janice House. Nettie Bynum is Miss S.N.E.A. Bruce Eure is editor of The Shaw Bear with Anne Squires as his assistant. Josephine Dancy is now a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority. Having distinguished themselves by leadership and out- standing achievement, some seniors were elected to the elite Who ' s Who in American Colleges and Universities. They are: Velma Adams, Evelyn A. Clay, Mozelle Davis, Joann Reedy, Ellen Spivey, Charles Earle, James Fox, Louis Hall, and Percy High. Andrew Mwangi, a citizen of Kenya, Africa, joined our class of 1960. Mwangi has worked diligently, undaunted by the trials of college life. He is now president of the Social Science Club. Three full academic years at Shaw and four summer sessions (two at Shaw LIniversity and two at North Carolina State College) have brought Andrew within the sight of his college goal. We are very grateful to have had the outstanding leader. Dr. Wilmoth Carter, as our advisor for the last two years. We, who were welcomed here as freshmen four years ago, and who are now standing on the threshold preparing for our departure into active life, are far different from what we were when we arrived. Confronted by the changing times and a world that seems not to protect and shelter but to expose and challenge, we cognizantly acknowledge the challenge, and our four-year preparation for meeting it. As we leave the portals of our beloved institution, Shaw University, our minds ripened with wisdom and desired expression, we have paused e en here to gain historical perspective. Realizing that we look back at the past in order to understand the present, and ex- plain the present with the objective of making some degree of prediction for the future, we can at this point only project our thoughts. If potential and performance while students at Shaw be indicative of future expectations of the class of 1963, we can only hope that the history still to be written for each person in the class may be a manifestation of the objective of Shaw University — to have religion and learning go hand in hand and character grow with knowledge. 59 Wi ■' . m!mf. CLASS PROPHECY To no extent did we ever visualize mentally that some day we would actually be the first nation to reach the moon — since there was quite a bit of controversy about Russia and the United States ' attempting to make that advancement in science. Neither did we realize that some of the most outstanding persons of this time were Shaw University graduates. One of these persons is Charles Michael, who heads a chemical plant where he has assigned James Cullen Bridges to work as his assistant. This year, 1973, certainly marks the beginning of a new era because the attempt to reach the moon was definitely a success. Donald Bowman, the designer of the successful astronautic aircraft, calculated its likely success. Because of Carroll Purcell ' s noted career in the Air Force, the designer chose him to help test the astronautic aircraft. After the prominent advancement, Joan Pace wrote a science book entitled Life on the Moon. After reading of the renowned progress of those members of my class, I, Ellen Jean Spivey, Professor of Education at Yale University, where Dr. James Fox is president, decided to write my doctoral thesis on The Advancement of the 1963 Graduates of Shaw University, Raleigh, North Carolina. I anticipated it would be effective to visit the many regions of the United States, and foreign countries as well, to actually con- verse with my classmates. First, I went to California where Genell Todd is an actress living in Beverly Hills. Much to my surprise, Bruce Eure is her husband and manager. While in Hollywood, I decided to go to the theater of see A Night on the Beach, written by the playwrights, Velma Adams and Mattie Leggett, and produced by the Stafford Bullock Company. Elaine Maddox designed the com- plete wardrobe for the characters, and decorated the stage for the production, for she is a famous designer and decorator in Sacra- mento. My third day in California, Herbert Freeman, the governor of that expansive state, invited me to dinner in his mansion located in the midst of the capital, a dinner celebrating his victory in being elected California ' s Governor. At the dinner, I was pleased to dis- cover that his private secretary was Annette Glee. Some of his eminent guests at the dinner were Wendell Edwards, Mayor of Los Angeles; Mamie Belton, a psychiatric social worker; and Doretha Williams, known as queen of opera singers. What a pleasant sur- prise to find at the dinner one of my best friends, Mozelle Davis, supervisor of San Francisco Public Schools. I had only a limited amount of time to remain in California before I had to return to the east coast. I went to the airport and boarded a jet-Pan American Airlines — flown by Eleanor Nunn, first woman jet pilot. On the plane, it was my prerogative to share a seat with Betty Newsome, Professor of Psychology at the University of Ohio where she is happily married to a retired service man. My trip this time brings me to Detroit, Michigan where William Hartsfield has designed the Cadillac for 1973. His wife, LaVerne Blackwell, a retired teacher of business, now assists him. Martin Smith and Anne Squires are studying at Michigan State University for their doctorate degrees. My next flight took me to Chicago, Illinois where I lived at Clark ' s Motel owned by Allie Clark, who is wedded to Patricia Cooper, a Pulitzer prize winner. Here I find Marie Bond, counselor for juvenile delinquents. She invited me to her urban office where she related that she had read many cases of juvenile delinquents written by Lacy Simpson, a minister and social worker. After I left Chi cago, I went to New York City. Here I learned that Kayreitha High, Pricilla Robinson, and Doris Monk are work- ing with the New ' York Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Josephine Langford is a stenographer for Bonwit Teller. Stella Little and Inez Dean have established a physical fitness school on 125th Street. Joanne Pretty Dunn is the director of Jolliet Park Child ,Care Center on Long Island. I went to the Yankee stadium to see Nathaniel Carter and Paul Diggs play in the World Series with the New York Yankees. While relaxing in one of my relative ' s homes, I turned on the tele- vision to watch the Otis Tucker Show. On the show, Yvonne Ed- wards stepped out for a performance. The Reedy Trio, with Joan Reedy, sponsor, Mary Tillman, and H. T. Davis, gave a splendid performance. Before leaving New York, I picked up the New York Times and I was quite pleased to find that Patricia Malone is the editor. At the airport, I bought a Vogue magazine and who did I see on the cover but Sandra Ramsey and Peggy Barfield. My next stop is New Jersey. Howard Anderson is the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Atlantic City. I talked with Anderson, and he informed me that Billy Watts owns a cocktail lounge in Englewood. I saw Bar- bara Malone featured with Duke Ellington ' s band, and I learned that she has turned out five top-selling jazz albums. I caught the bus to Philadelphia. In Philly, Ann .Anthony is the principal of Felix Grissom ' s Elementary School. Marion Best Hop- kins, now residing in Philadelphia, is the Grand Basileus of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. At Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, Carol Snipe is a physical therapist, Carol ' s husband. Frank Abbott, is the head surgeon. I had a pleasant train trip to the capitol, Washington, D.C., where I saw Janice House. Janice, happily married to a doctor, is one of the ten best dressed women in the United States. She informed me that Helen Miller is one of the most efficient librarians at the Library of Congress. Willie Stone, now married to Dorothy Savage, a public school teacher, sits in Congress as representative from the State of Virginia. I dare not end my tour without visiting foreign countries, since many of my classmates have ventured and settled afar. Mainly through the efforts of Percy High, Secretary General of the United Nations, many international complications have been mitigated. My first flight abroad was to the continent of Europe. Constance Alston and Sandra Miles are doing their graduate work at Oxford University, where, incidentally Arlene Miles, is a professor of psy- chology. Constance informs me that Joan Williams heads the De- partment of the Social Science at Oxford. Naturally, I could not go to Europe without touring Paris. Guess who I found there as a fashion designer, Queen Plemmer, who gave up her teaching career after a couple of years. After being informed by Queenie that two of our classmates were at the University of Paris, I set out for gay Paree. There I found that LaVerne Godette was on the faculty. Also, Judith Moore heads the Mathematics De- partment. Queenie has been keeping up with our classmates rather closely. She imparted that Nettie Bynum, Hattie Blackwell, Lena Foust and Evelyn Clay had been on a tour recently. While they were vacating she enjoyed the immunity of designing their winter wardrobes. After visiting many key cities in Europe, I enplaned again for the United States. I flew over to Richmond, Virginia where I had been informed that Waders Campbell, Jr. is the principal of the River- side High School. On his faculty, I found Barbara Morris, Milton Davis, and Lorraine Watson. Naturally, I anticipated finding someone back at Shaw Univer- sity. I was not surprised to find Louis Hall had replaced Dr. Carter in the Social Science Department. Willie Batchelor replaced Dean Harrison who retired a couple of years ago. Charles Earle has re- turned to Shaw to serve as president. In the Raleigh public school system, I found my friends Virginia Avery, Mary Tillman, and Ma- mie Bailey. My thesis is almost completed now. This has been a wonderful tour. We will certainley visit each other now that we have a bird ' s eye view of where everyone lives and works. 62 Shaw University is proud to have 10 students listed in the 1962-63 edition of Vho ' s Who among Students in American Colleges and Universities. The honorees were selected by a joint student-faculty committee on the basis of academic achieve- ment, leadership, participation in student life programs, service to the University community, and potential for outstanding citizenship after graduation. O M E G A D O G S Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, was organized at Butler University on November 12, 1922, in Indianapolis, Indiana. The purpose of this sorority is expressed in its slo- gan, Greater Service, Greater Progress. Activities are encouraged that will further in every way possible the advantages of its members intellectually, morally, and socially. To attain this goal, Sigma Women assume the responsibility: (a) to provide an atmosphere in which friendship and social contacts may be developed, [b) to develop leadership abilities and individual talents, (c) to en- courage and promote high scholastic attainment, and (d) to maintain interests and attitudes in harmony with modem thoughts and changing educational out- looks. Young women who are interested in becoming mem- bers of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority take the first step by joining the Aurora Club, which is the interest group of the sorority.
