THIS MILESTONE COMES AT A TIME WHEN OUR NATION IS MORE FIRMLY COMMITTED THAN EVER TO EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION. EDUCATION HAS BEEN HONORED BY A CABINET POSITION FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY, SO I AM DOUBLY PLEASED TO WISH YOU SUCCESS AS WE BEGIN A NEW CENTURY IN EDUCATION TOGETHER. At Right: Rodney Butler 1979-1980 Homecoming King The 1979-80 Homecoming King is as a lion reigning over his kingdom. Rodney Butler, 1979-80 Homecoming King, bad the following to say about being King: I feel my responsibilities as HOMECOMING KING include just being myself. The title of Homecoming King means reigning over the Homecoming festivities. This is a responsibility that is understood. My personal responsibilities include helping to promote school spirit and pride. The public’s eye will constantly be on me, therefore I must have and show a positive attitude toward my school and others. Since the responsibilities of Homecoming King are not written laws, they are really what you make them. OUR QUEEN My responsibilities as homecoming queen are to be congenial, have a positive attitude towards school and to maintain good grades. When I ran for homecoming queen my main interest was not to Ms. Annita Oliver, win but to participate in an activity that I could enjoy and really step out of the crowd and be noticed as an individual. I realize my responsibilities include not only what I did on Oct. 26, 1979, but also Below right: Selma Gamble, Principal, presents the 1979-80 Homecoming Queen. what I do throughout this 79-80 school year. I believe in Shaw High School and I, as the 1979-80 homecoming queen, will do all that I can to encourage a positive image among my classmates. 9 At Right: Dr. R. After their performance the band was treated to a lunch on the patio. is Every once in awhile we must pause . . . . . . to enjoy the simple things of life. The tired Cardinals stop to rest during the high action of a football game. In the mountain, stillness surges up to explore its own height; in the lake, movement stands still to contemplate its own depth. Tagore 16 Administrators Lead The Way Dr. Rondle E. Edwards, Superintendent of schools. (Above) Dr. Edwards with “future” Shaw students. To this date, we have concerned ourselves with the mechanics of developing and implementing an effective educational curriculum at Shaw High School; however, there is a more vital element: The human element. No matter how eloquent the program, the students and teachers are the ones that determine whether or not it succeeds. The students and teachers at Shaw are to be commended for the way in which they accepted the adjustments to changes, yet continue to move forward. Their ability and willingness to always strive for quality, places them a cut above the rest. We the students, teachers, administrators, and parents must continue to view ourselves as part of a quality educational program. That is the only way we can expect others to view us in that same vein. Selma Gamble Principal (Above) Mr. Selma Gamble, Principal Shaw High School. (Above) Mr. Stephen J. June 8, 1980 Seniors Angela Burrell and Eric Reese prepare lor graduation. Commencemen t When September came, Shaw High seniors began the last and most exciting school year of all. The months were filled with studying for classes and writing that “research paper” for English. Senior pictures were tak- en at school in the auditorium for the first time ever, and as pictures were taken, seniors realized that June was not far away. Applications for colleges and the PSAT, and ACT were completed. And, just as we thought our last application was complete, there was one more for the Cleveland Scholarship Program! There was time, however, to establish new friendships and renew old ones. Plans were made for after graduation- weddings, jobs, college, and families. And on June 8,1980, we real- ized what it was all for. Andre Wright, “Smiley”, waits to have his senior portrait Marcia Alexander poses for a graduation picture, taken. 83 Seniors Michael Watson, Myra Ancar, Mark Nunn, and Papae Wilson take time to relax between classes. Harold Edmonds, Richard Dim bo, and Reginald Frazier, discover that being a senior means a lot of studying. Senior Club president Rhonda Butler, and Annette Long listen intentively at a Senior Club meeting. 84 Sports Team Effort f Fans Cheering Winning Spirit 86 “Nice Guys Don’t Have To Finish Last” jFreshmen “Post” 4-2-2 Season Shaw Opponents 6 ORANGE 0 6 WARRENSVILLE 6 38 PAINESVILLE 6 20 WESTLAKE 0 8 LAKEWOOD 0 6 BENEDICTINE 8 0 CHANEL 6 0 PADUA 0 Top: S. The girls must meet all eligibility requirements of the athletic department, and they find their time divided between practice and studies! All the softball games are played at Forest Hills Park. It entails a great deal of hard work and dedication. In the spring of the school year, approximately 50 anxious girls attend practice sessions to learn the cheers, chants, and dances. These girls are finally judged on the basis of their jumps, splits, cartwheels, cheers, chants, and smiles! From the contestants 24 are chosen. These new cheerleaders practice approximately 3 days per week in preparation for the games. They cheer for all football and basketball games. Each squad has a captain who is in charge of communication with others and also teaches new cheers. Smith Wrestlers This year’s wrestling team could not boast any wins and ended their season with a 0-9 record. Despite the young team's losses (there are only 4 juniors and one senior on the team) there were still some bright moments. Darryl Shy has won three matches by decisions, and Coley Banks also won three matches by pinning two of his opponents. A pin is an automatic win for the wrestler and requires that the opponent’s shoulder blades be held on the mat for a two second count by the referee. On the other hand, a decision is determined by total points which are given according to what the wrestler does. For example, a take-down scores two points while an escape only one point. Greg Page has won 2 decisions; George Davis one; and Morris Davis has one pin and one decision. Donald Shy has pinned one opponent. So despite a winless season Coach Range is optimistic for his young team and promises a brighter future. 97 Varsity Basketball Top Row: Quintero Mack, Greg Magee, William Butler, Joseph Mitchell, Michael Snell, Kennedy Suffard, Leonard Waltower. Athletic Director Walt Killian was named new coach, and he brings to the position experience and new ideas. He hopes to see a big difference in the team’s performance. Coach Killian believes that the guys are better than their “worst season in history” headlines. It is difficult for a coach to come in at middle stream, but, fortunately, the team and new coach had help from former Coach McDonald and Mr. Bowman, J.V. coach. When asked about his plans for the basketball program, Coach Killian said that one of the changes he will make will be to run an off-season training program to keep the team in shape. Since this year’s team does not have support from the student body, he hopes to give the Cardinal supporters a winning team, but says it would be “helpful to have support whether the team is losing or winning.” Stanford Parish shoots from the top of the key.
