s tw estie nMA s 15320 Euclid Avenue EAST CLEVELAND, OHIO 44112 VISIONS OF '79 INTRODUCTION “Our introduction is dedicated to today's parents as well as our future parents.” A Gift l or Your C hild Raising a child is delicate business. A parent can unknowlingly leave a child with wounds he will carry all his life. On the other hand, a parent can bless him by letting him know he is loved, important, and respected as a unique person. Th is gift often not given is self esteem. It's a healthy appreciation for oneself and self-confidence to succeed or cope with failure. It's a child accepting himself the way God made him. Many children develop a sense of inferiority that haunts them the rest of their lives. They grow up in homes plagued with unfulfilled relationships and personal frustrations. From these lonely youths come teen-age suicides and juvenile crimes. Violent behavior against themselves or others is one way of coping with their feelings of inferiority. Parents can help, especially fathers. As the leaders in the home, fathers play a crucial role in developing self-confidence and a positive self-image in children. The most important factor in developing a child's self-image is how he is treated by his parents during his first years. By age five a child develops his estimate of his worth. This extimate is based on the actions, statements, and expectations of his parents. During his first years, a child looks to his father. The father balances the strengths and weaknesses of the mother. As the leader, he carries the major responsibility for discipline. His oppinions and behavior help the child decide how he feels about himself 9 Brothers and sisters also play a role in forming a child's self-image. Sensitive parents will watch their children's relation- ship to one another and help them show love to each other. This is cxpccially important when the children arc only a year or two apart. The younger often lives in the shadow of the older. In his book Hide or Seek, James Dobson attacks two values he claims have infiltrated American society and the home. He says that beauty and intelligence arc standards wrongly used to evaluate human worth. What about the child who is ugly or who is a slow learner? What is he supposed to think about himself? In far too many cases, he is made to feel inferior and rarely develops his full potential. As a child grows with a feeling of inferiority, he gets caught in a vicious cycle where bad experiences confirm his poor image of himself The cycle can be broken, but it isn't easy. The following list may be helpful to parents who want to build self-esteem in their children. 1. Husband, make your relationship with your wife most important. Parents who first love each other provide security for their children. 2. Evaluate your expectations of your children. Are you requiring too much? Are you forcing them into roles they aren't ready for (c.g.. Little League star, exceptional student)?. 3. Examine your own self-image. Recognize your strengths and build on them. Be realistic about your weaknesses. Don't be afraid to confess weaknesses and mistakes to your children. 4. Give your children responsibilities around the home. Compliment them when they do them well. Add more responsi- bilities as they grown older to encourage feelings of independence and accomplishment. 5. Spend plenty of time with your children. This alone communicates that they are important to you. I nvolve them in your activities. For example, take them to work with you some time, if feasible. 6. Be interested in. what your children accomplish. Give lots of sincere recognition and praise. 7. Help them be realistic about their failings. Always look for areas where they succeed. 8. Show trust. Let them know you are counting on them to do certain things within their capabilities. 9. Treat them with respect. Let them express themselves and listen, 10. Prepare them for adolescence. Let them know what will happen, physically and socially, when they become teen- agers. 11. Pray with your children. Thank God for each child's special gifts and abilities. The yearbook staff felt no one would be more deserving to dedicate our 1979 Shuttle to than Mr. Martin Gottlieb, even though he is no longer affiliated with Shaw High School Staff. Mr. Gottlieb has served for 9 years as Associate Principal at Shaw. During his time here he was well liked by both stu- dents and faculty. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, where he received all of his early education. He is a graduate of our very own Shaw High School. He furthered his education at Ohio State where he received a BA in Sociology and a BS in Education. He received his MA from Case Western Reserve University. He has done further studies at St. John College, Akron Univer- sity and John Carroll University. When asked, “Did the students at Shaw like you?” He replied, “Well, if they didn’t I wouldn’t have been there that long.” Why did you leave Shaw and come to Kirk? His reply “I heard they needed somebody here to get a few things done. Good luck to you Mr. Gottlieb at Kirk and we miss you. Thanks for what you have done at Shaw. TODAY The Shuttle Staff felt that this year a dual dedication would be most appropriate. Basically because the man to fill the position of Associate Principal is one who has served in the East Cleveland School System for a number of years, Mr. Stephen Lloyd. Mr. Lloyd was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania where he received all of his early education. While in high school, he played football for four years. After completion of high school, he attended Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York, where he re- ceived a BA degree in Printing. He also played football while in college. Upon completion of college, he married his wife, Mary. Later he served a two year stretch with the Navy. Thereafter, a daughter, Monica was born to them. At present, Monica is six years old. Mr. Lloyd’s educational experience — Printing teacher in the Cleveland and East Cleveland School Systems. He came to Shaw in 1970. He became a Unit Principal in 1971. He served in this capacity for the last 7 years. In 1970 he attended Cleveland State to get his MA. In 1978 he was chosen by a panel to become Associate Principal of Shaw High School, taking Mr. Gottlieb’s position. Mr. Lloyd welcomes the change to work with teachers, especially the new teachers as well as the students. He feels that he will be very beneficial in assisting the new teachers. His interests are athletics, music and traveling. HOMECOMING FESTIVITIES Varsity football players greeted with carnations. Three drum majors jamming to a beat of a different sound. The program started out as an extension of the In-School Suspension. The Objectives of the program were to provide special assistance and services to students who had been identified as having special needs. These needs were not being met in the regular school setting. The eight (8) primary objectives of the program arc: (1) to provide students with extensive orientation and motivational counseling, (2) assist each student in finding social service agencies to provide them with assistance to meet their individ- ual needs, (3) provide orientation and counseling to prevent the student from becoming deeply involved in juvenile acts that may lead to criminal act- ivities at an early age, (4) to help provide better communication between the school and the homes, (5) provide psychological, remedial and tutorial services, (6) provide work experiences within the program to help the student become skilled in some occupation area, (7) assist the student in find- ing part-time jobs and counseling on how to keep the job, for those who need financial assistance to meet their obligations and (8) provide extensive follow-up services after they have left the program, hopefully to return to the regular school setting. The program provides services to approximately one hundred (100) students each year. The program has offered classes in areas of Small Gasoline Engine Repair, Community and Family Awareness, Building Maintenance and Remedial Math and English. There have been field trips to places such as Niagara Falls, Canada and the Justice Center; guest speakers from Community Action Against Addiction, East Cleveland Police Department, East Cleveland City Hall, John Glenn Smith Drug Clinic, Turner Construction Company, East Cleveland Human Services, Alcholics Anonymous and others have come out to talk to Motivation Program students. The office of the Motivation Center is currently located at the Shaw Annex Building 2, 15132 Euclid Avenue, next door to Pupil Personnel. The staff of five (5) persons arc doing a tremendous job in providing the students, enrolled in the program, with the king of individualized attention that they need to help them cope with some of the everyday problems they are faced with.
