G§cHtH¥W Cc RcDcIcNy LS SHAW HIGH SCHOOL 15320 Euclid Avenue East Cleveland, Ohio 44112 Introduction Go placidly amid (he noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant: they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter: for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of lime. Exercise criterion in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline be gentle with yourself. You arc a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. Found in Old St. Pauls Church, Baltimore: Dated 1692 Our Leader We dedicate our 1978 yearbook to Mr. Richard Vlah, our eleventh and twelfth grade unit principal. Mr. Vlah was born October 20, 1940 under the astrological sign of Libra. He and his wife, Patricia have three children — Steve - 9, Jennifer - 5, and Kathryn - 3. They reside in Chesterland, Ohio. He attended West Geauga High School where he participated on the football and basketball teams. After graduating from West Geauga High School, he enrolled at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio where he majored in Science. While there, he played on the football team. He later attended John Carroll University and received his Masters Degree. Mr. Vlah’s opinion of Shaw is that it is a large school that has a lot of nice students and provides a good educa- tion for all. Taken from EAST CLEVELAND CITIZEN “Love” Love is cool and sometimes sweet But you’ll never know The next fool you’ll meet Love can also be cruel and sad Love can leave you heartborken And really mad. You’ll try to get revenge and End up dead or maybe someone will bust your head. “Life” Life is beauty Life is grace Life is out living the human race. Life can be good Life can be bad Life is the best thing you ever had. Life is love Life is hate Life is testing each other’s fate. Life can be swing Life can be a slide Life can be a very hard side. Life can be fast Life can be slow But you’ll never know When it’s your time to go. Life can be rich Life can be poor But when you’re dead You’re worth no more. Both Poems were written by Herbert Wright WORK Few persons realize how much of their happiness is dependent upon their work upon the fact that they are kept busy and not left to feed upon themselves. Happiness comes most to persons who seek her least, and think least about it. It is not an object to be sought; it is a state to be induced. It must follow and not lead. It must over- take you, and not you overtake it. How important is health to happiness, yet the best promoter of health is something to do. Blessed is the man who has some congenial work, some occupation in which he can put his heart, and which affords a complete outlet to all the forces there arc in him. Black is you, you as an individual striving to gain respect in the white-man’s world. Not walking down the street saying I am Black, I am Proud I am Somebody Instead of saying I am Black and being nothing. Be Black Be Proud But most of all be somebody and hold on to your pride and self respect and have that answer to that never answered question what is Black. Is it something that every human being Should take into consideration, or Is it something that should be An Obligation? 9 Is it faithfulness to something you have to do? Or is it something that you throw behind and say you're through? In order for a person to be responsible The dictionary states That these are the qualifications to which you must relate Your Duty — A legal obligation Your Obligation — the act of binding oneself by promise or contract with consideration. Your trust — To have faith in someone you rely on Most of all someone who you have to depend on. This is all of the qualifications of Responsibility Although you may not have the accountability this is what happens to a club that has People who are not responsible such as The unfaithful members of the Shuttle Staff!
