The junior year, one of the most important in a student's high school career, offers many challenges and privileges to the juniors. Colleges and careers are examined, and many Saturday mornings are spent taking achievement tests. The coming of class rings marks the end of the junior year, and the juniors eagerly look forward to the prestige of their final year of high school. They enjoy the privilege of being able to participate in the One and Ten Thousand” campaign. The class of 1970 proves to be a promising class, coming in second only to the seniors. Although they still are underclassmen, they try their best to set good examples for the freshmen. At last they feel sure of the part they play in a busy, active high school. After this year of work, preparation, and fun, the sophomores are ready to accept the prestige of finally being upperclassmen. new responsibilities. Many rewarding friendships, which will last and grow in the years to come, are made during this first year of high school. Various clubs at Shaw provide career opportunities for the new students in nursing, teaching, and many other fields. Teachers present new and challenging problems to each individual. 'Filings may seem hectic and disorganized to a frightened freshman, but as the years go on, the frosh become more familiar with life at Shaw and become more a part of the school. The first tournament game (sectionals) was played against Eastlake North at the North gym and was perhaps the key to our future as the Cardinals won 57-54 in an overtime. Shaw’s next rival was Kenston, a team which proved to be a very stubborn opponent. But the mighty Cardinals came through again by defeating them 53-45. In the sectional finals, Shaw met a Euclid team that had defeated them twice during the regular season. This was a new “season” and the Cardinals turned the tables on the Panthers to the tune of 53-45. At the conclusion of this tournament, Ernie Coffey and Bob Simmons were voted to the Sectional Allstar team. The District was held at Eastlake, and Shaw drew Geneva as its opponent. Shaw built up an early lead and was never headed as it coasted to a 65-46 verdict. The finals of the District pitted the Ashtabula Panthers against the Cardinals. Again Shaw jumped off to a quick lead and defeated a fine Ashtabula team 72-55. Ernie Coffey was voted Most Valuable Player in the district and made the All-Star team, along with Bob Allen, Bruce Bythway, and Bob Simmons. Shaw then traveled to Kent to play Cuyahoga Falls in the Kent Regionals. The tournament trial ended as Shaw fell before Falls 80-55. This was the first time Shaw had advanced to the Kent Regionals since 1950. Although beaten, Shaw could hold her head high with the knowledge that she had accomplished more than any Shaw team in the past seventeen years. And to top it off, Shaw has seven lettermen returning for the 1967-68 year. 96 GOLF GOLF—Bottom Row: J. Dorsey, B. Chrysler, T. Grant. Second Row: J. Glenn, R. Cornez, T. Mitri, B. A.C. tries to develop leadership and interest in physical education, to develop ability in demonstrating skills and activities, and to develop practices of good sportsmanship. One member, who is appointed head of an activity, is required to set up teams, prepare times for these teams to play, take attendance, and record points with the help of her student assistant. A.C. members aid in the gym classes every day, and they also help to make G.A.A. activities more enjoyable for all members. Each A.C. member receives one hundred points per year for her services. Then girls from both teams were chosen for an all-star team, which competed with other schools. This year the girls traveled to Valley Forge and Brush for some tough competition, but the girls were always determined to win. They played against the faculty, and the girls victoriously finished first in a plavday at Shaw High School. This exciting game of pig-tail basketball is an annual spring event which continues in its interest and popularity. Before the game the girls spent about two weeks after school practicing. Posters and flyers were made during their free time, and meetings were held during the week and on Sundays. The girls held meetings at each other's homes to discuss plays and make posters. Whether they won or not, all of the girls experienced a feeling of satisfaction in working and playing hard to attain a goal. The managers of the varsity and junior varsity teams devoted much of their time and energy to plan and organize this successful game. ARMY CHEERLEADERS — Bottom Row: J. Yoshioka, C. Hill, P. Flagg 124 ACTIVITIES Spring marks not only the coming of graduation, but also other spring activities which follow May Queen. The Senior “A” dance, sponsored by Canteen Council, is held the week after May Queen. Awards are given at the dance to some seniors who have shown outstanding achievements and qualities during their high school career. The next week brings prom, probably the most exciting social event of the senior year. The prom is held in the Shaw Gymnasium and Korb Lounge, where the seniors are found in their most formal apparel attending their final dance. Honor Day, the following week, is the seniors’ last day of school. Then seniors and their parents are invited to come to the auditorium for Class Night. At both of these events, many awards are given to students for excellence and participation in studies and activities. Finally comes graduation, the ultimate moment in every seniors’ life. 128 129 GRADUATION 1967 The coming of spring means just the end of another school year for the undergraduates, but it is the end of high school for tin seniors. It means thinking about the future, prom, and graduation. Graduation means different things to all people, but for all it means an end and a beginning. For business majors, it means preparing for the business world. For the college-bound students, it means getting ready for college. Yet for others, it means marriage and settling down with added responsibilities. Whichever direction the graduate turns, it is going to be a new experience. New acquaintances will be made, and the graduate steps out of his old way of life. For twelve years, he has gone to school every day and has encountered the same faces and problems, but this has come to an end. He is now ready to think seriously about the future. 1967 MAY QUEEN One of Shaw’s final exciting events of the year is the nomination of May Queen. The seniors nominate the girl of their choice, and the six girls who receive the most votes are selected as candidates. A week is set aside for campaigning and committee meetings. At the end of this time, each girl is presented at the special May Queen rally, and her committee presents a skit in her behalf. Helen Klodetsky, the 1967 May Queen, reigned over the dance at Korb Lounge with her court, Deborah Dowery, Joy Siple, Deborah Depp, Michelle Hallier, and Julie Nadeau. This lively Broadway musical, based on the story “Idylls of Sarah Brown” and the characters of Damon Runyon, was brought to the stage this year. Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling wrote the book, and Frank Loesser did the music and lyrics. GUYS AND DOLLS is about the hilarious adventures of Broadway gamblers and their girls. Sarah Brown (Carole-Lynn Glavic), is the soul-saving head of Save-A-Soul Mission, who tries to save the black soul of gambler Sky Masterson (Dale Davies), not only because he is a sinner, but because she has fallen in love with him. Nathan Detroit (Dan Wilson) has promised his chorus girl fiancee Adelaide (Becky Donaldy), to whom he has been engaged for fourteen years, to give up his gambling career, get a job, and marry her. Nicely-Nicely Johnson, Benny Southstreet, Rusty Charlie, Arvide Abernathy, Big Jule, and others also play an important part in the play. This thoroughly delightful musical comes to a close as Nathan gives up his gambling to marry Adelaide, and Sky joins Save-A-Soul Mission and marries Sarah. Where’s the broads? This is rehearsal? 134 The play ends with a note of success. 135 HOMECOMING ’67 Meg Gottron escorted by Brian Ross Adelena Marshall reigns over her court at the Homecoming Dance. Neither rain, mud. nor bitter defeat could dampen the spirits of the Shaw High students. Although Brush crushed Shaw to a 15-8 defeat, neither the team nor the students gave up without a fight. Homecoming Queen Adelena Marshall was crowned during half-time. Adelena and her court, Mary Baird, Meg Gottron, Leslie Jacobs, Chris Hill, and Denise Sawyer, reigned at the after-game dance. 137 Denise Sawyer and escort Reginald Dash Bruce Westcott escorts Leslie Jacobs LE MASQUE Le Masque, sponsored by Mr. Martin, is a club at Shaw which tries to interest people in acting. This year the thirty-five members put on a fall show; occasionally they promote a spring production, too! They meet twice monthly on Wednesday. This year the members of Le Masque went to Kent State University for a drama clinic. The purpose of this field trip was to not only help promote an interest in acting, but to interest them in props, make-up, and casting. LE MASQUE — Bottom Rote: D. McFarland, L. Alexander, S. The cast members, some of them members of previous Shaw productions, were just the best. They perform at all football games, some basketball games, and they appeared in the annual Ki-wanis Show this year. The line consists of twelve girls and four understudies. The managers deserve special recognition for devoting so much of their time to the Hi-Liters. Dances were taught to them by choreographer, Mr. Maurice Nystram. It takes hard work and practice to be a Hi-Liter. During the summer, practice sessions were held under the annex three or four times a week and every night during the football season. 145 STUDENT COUNCIL The opinions and ideals of the student body can be voiced in Student Council, the largest service organization at Shaw. This year the Student Council Constitution was revised to reduce Council's size and make it a more efficient and effective organization. Representatives were chosen in a special election second semester, not from homerooms, but from buildings. Committees were opened to membership to all Shaw students to promote interest and greater participation in Council activities. The meetings arc planned by the executive board. In order to discuss basic problems and gain new ideas in high school government, these students have attended seminars on student councils in the L.E.L. This year Council again sponsored Homecoming, two allschool parties, and May Queen elections, as well as most of the small service projects. The committees in Council do such things as organizing Cardinal-of-the-Month, decorating the football field and the cars for Homecoming, scheduling and planning the sports rallies, and distributing the I-D cards. Student Council served the community through its work on United Appeal. Shaw's student body is kept informed of the many school activities by Council. The marching band started drilling during the last week of August. They drilled in the mornings on the football field, and they learned new music in the afternoons at Korb Lounge. They celebrated with a picnic at the end of this hard work period. The marching band performed during half-time at the football games during the first ten weeks of school. At the end of this period, the marching band changed over to the Shaw High Concert Band, under the direction of S. Robert Fraser. The band, in this form, presented a spring concert. The band closed the year by changing back to a marching band to participate in the East Cleveland Memorial Day Parade. BAND — Bottom Row: L. Phelps, M. Grant, V. Smith, J. Keister, B. Dennis, D. Robert Fraser and Mr. Joseph Riccardi, the Shaw High Orchestra undertook many tasks during the 1967-68 school year. The orchestra played for the traditional Veterans Day Program in November, and they provided entertainment for the Christmas program. The annual spring musical, South Pacific, also used the services of the orchestra. The orchestra brought the year to an end by playing for the commencement exercises at Severance Hall. This hard-working organization deserves recognition for their perseverance, ability and success. ORCHESTRA — Bottom Row: C. Ector, D. Crcga, V. Wells. G. Grossman, N. Galambush, C. Turner, K. Cryshr The Shaw High Rhythm Teens, selected musicians and vocalists, who entertain with an original and professional air are chosen on the basis of ability and personalia from Shaw’s various musical organizations. Good showmanship must be acquired in order to present their programs. This organization, which has entertained audiences since 1953, performs for audiences throughout Northeastern Ohio, such as the Salvation Army, the Red Cross Awards, Kiwanis, Cleveland’s City Club and the Girl Scouts. 161 CONCERT CHOIR AND MIXED CHORUS Under the direction of Mrs. Ruth lioness, the Shaw High Concert Choir and Mixed Chorus have become a celebrated faction of East Cleveland. These groups perform twice a year together at the Christmas Concert and the Spring Festival. The Concert Choir, which is the most select group, also displays its musical talents at the Veteran’s Day program, the Home and Flower Show, the Lake Erie League Choir Festival, at Severance Center for a Christmas program, and at the Women’s Club. A final concert at Severance Hall for the commencement program concludes the year. The choir sings in octets and quartets instead of the usual sectional arrangement. The music they sing is in four to eight parts, both accompanied and a capeUa. This year the choir worked on new trends in music and with the sound of dissonance for the first time. Both groups are concerned with performance and music appreciation, and many aypes of music, such as religious, folk, and stage arc explored. Musical selections used by both choirs have been found comparable to those used by many colleges. East Cleveland and its nearby suburbs have rewarded both groups with praise. CHOIR — Bottom Row: C. It is comprised of members who devote their time and energy for the benefit of Shaw students. Our library aides help to keep the library in ar organized and orderly condition. Included in their many activities are taking attendance, delivering notices, arranging magazines, and designing displays. Their help is greatly appreciated. After school, leisure would not be complete without the help of those who work behind the concession stand. They spend many extra hours serving the students. Music is supplied in the lounge during lunch, after school, at dances, and at rallies by the Korb Sound Crew. Shaw students are kept informed of school events by the members of Audio-Visual and Public Address. They also help in supplementary education. SOUND CREW — Bottom Row: C. Maxwell, C. Jones. The previous weeks and months have been filled with exasperating work and, at times, bitter disputes. But with the termination of the work in March, the excitement and the true rewards of composing a yearbook are achieved. The compliments from the many people at Shaw, the smiles of freshmen as they receive their SHUTTLES for the first time, and the excitement at seeing Shaw portrayed through the SHUTTLE make all the mishaps and failures seem insignificant. This year my staff and I feel that the SHUTTLE especially depicts the true Cardinal spirit of Shaw. From athletic victories, scholastic triumphs, and many social activities, we have shown a picture-portrayal of the 1967-68 school year. This yearbook is our attempt to recapture and preserve all the thrilling, as well as disappointing moments of all Cardinals, so that they may recapture these moments at any time and at any place. The success of this 1968 yearbook was due to the efforts of many people. I personally should like to thank every staff member who sacrificed personal time to complete the work for the yearbook. I should also like to extend my appreciation to Mr. George Stewart for his help on the selection of our cover from the S. K. Smith Co. Mr. Jim Parkinson, our representative from the Graphic Arts Corporation, offered us countless original ideas, guidance and encouragement. Alston Studios should be remembered for the fine color undergraduate pictures. We owe special thanks to Raimor Studios, not only for our Senior pictures, but for their assistance with all the pictures which were taken. I should especially like to thank Bruce Westcott and Jim Pahl, our student photographers, for the excellent job they did in taking all the pictures. Without their continued creative efforts, our graphic pictoral history would have been impossible. On behalf of the entire staff, I wish to thank Miss Sharen Cruinbacher, our advisor. Her perserverance, determination, and un-beatable spirit gave all of us inspiration at the difficult times. Without her ready smile, sense of humor, and concern for us and the SHUTTLE in every respect, we never could have reached a successful finish. Sincerely, Janet Mann 1968 Editor-in-Chief 180 Would you believe this is our Editor?
