With its “getting to know you approach, Shaw High School has captured the spirit of the American Field Service program. In this way our school is doing a distinct service toward international understanding and good will. Bruce Scharschmidt lived with a Swiss family in Lausanne as Shaw's representative for the 1963 AFS summer program. Unlike the majority of AFS students, he had the advantage of considerable travel in Europe with his Swiss parents who took him for a three-week stay to Assendelft in Holland, near the North Sea. Bruce says he, as well as his fellow AFS’ers, has found that people around the globe are basically the same and that it is the little differences that make the biggest impressions. Personable Faruk Seyrek of Turkey is this year s AFS foreign exchange student. In Istanbul he attends Roberts College, which is an American Boarding School with American teachers. His East Cleveland home is with the Max Griffith family. It has been Faruk’s lifelong dream to spend a year in an American school as a representative of the youth of Turkey. Shaw High School also is host to Ulrich Bingel, who is sponsored by Epworth Euclid Methodist Church and is an International Christian Youth Exchange Program student. Ulrich studies at Kant Gymnasium in Spandau (West Berlin), where he will return after his year with us. He earned his varsity letter in cross country and enjoys playing the guitar. The idea of changing classes for each subject and thereby being able to enlarge his circle of friends appeals to him. Ulrich lives with the Shelton family. 21

I MELODY IN MAY Queen Kathy Moore reigned at the 1962 May Queen Dance sponsored by Friendship Club. The theme of the dance, “Melody in May,” was carried out by the use of floral musical notes decorating the lounge. The dance was the perfect climax to an extremely busy week. Campaigning started immediately after the announcement of the candidates, with the committees meeting nightly to prepare for the assembly on the forthcoming Thursday. At that time the committees presented a humorous skit, which led to the presentation of their candidate for Queen on a beautifully decorated float. The other princesses were: Mary Daniels, Chris Dreifort, Joyce Johnson, Sandy Kormos. and Sue Skinner. 20

THE 1963 HOMECOMING QUEEN The 1963 Football Queen was Annette Zampino. She and her court added beauty and charm to an exciting game. During the half-time, Annette was crowned by Charles Little, President of Student Council. After the game a dance was held in honor of the Queen and our victorious team. 22
