The 1963 Shaw Hi-Liters, under the direction of Mary Lou Egan, Pat Bozik, and Faculty Advisor Miss Dillingham, have created a new and exciting version of a football halftime show. Through hard work and willingness to practice, the Hi-Liters have developed the only dance routine team of its kind in the Lake Erie League. This year the girls not only performed at football games but also at basketball games and rallies. The girls, along with the rhythm of the Shaw band, participated in the High School Band Day at Baldwin-Wallace College. Besides the regular line of twelve girls, there are three understudies who fill in should a regular be absent. UNDERSTUDIES G. Brown E. Reed L. Shone Miss Dillingham, the sponsor of French Club, showed throughout the year the slides she had taken of France during her visit there last summer. The club also enjoyed a Christmas party, Fete de Noel a la Franfaise, the Mardi Gras, and a French dinner with food prepared by the members. A French student would certainly miss a great deal of fun and opportunity if he didnât participate in the activities of French Club. Top Row: J. Fenton. T. Butler. M. Hcisler. C. Seaman. J. Salosky. The function of College Club is to present information to the student so that his choice can be made with more ease. Through lectures by individual college representatives, bus trips to nearby college campuses, and the $50 scholarship program for deserving Shaw graduates, College Club aids many students in taking their first step toward higher education. FUTURE NURSES I For many years Future Teachers of America has made significant contributions to the school and its student life. The paperback book store, which was started this year, has been successful in providing students with books for all types of reading. Proceeds went into a scholarship fund. The clubâs major activity of the year was an observation and participation program in elementary schools. This two day program, providing an early orientation to teaching, proved to be a valuable experience for those students planning a career in this field. Top Row: R. Walton. J. Scksay. M. Andrews, C. Other activities included an Avon Cosmetic Show, annual Fall Fashion Show, the Mother-Daughter Banquet, and Christmas service projects. The annual âAutumn Leaves Ballâ was a huge success enjoyed by the entire student body, as was the May Queen Dance, the perfect climax to a wonderful year! Top Row: K. Licbert, Service Chairman; L. The theme of the dance, âMelody in May,â was carried out by the use of floral musical notes decorating the lounge. The dance was the perfect climax to an extremely busy week. Campaigning started immediately after the announcement of the candidates, with the committees meeting nightly to prepare for the assembly on the forthcoming Thursday. At that time the committees presented a humorous skit, which led to the presentation of their candidate for Queen on a beautifully decorated float. The other princesses were: Mary Daniels, Chris Dreifort, Joyce Johnson, Sandy Kormos. and Sue Skinner. 20 With its âgetting to know you approach, Shaw High School has captured the spirit of the American Field Service program. In this way our school is doing a distinct service toward international understanding and good will. Bruce Scharschmidt lived with a Swiss family in Lausanne as Shaw's representative for the 1963 AFS summer program. Unlike the majority of AFS students, he had the advantage of considerable travel in Europe with his Swiss parents who took him for a three-week stay to Assendelft in Holland, near the North Sea. Bruce says he, as well as his fellow AFSâers, has found that people around the globe are basically the same and that it is the little differences that make the biggest impressions. Personable Faruk Seyrek of Turkey is this year s AFS foreign exchange student. In Istanbul he attends Roberts College, which is an American Boarding School with American teachers. His East Cleveland home is with the Max Griffith family. It has been Farukâs lifelong dream to spend a year in an American school as a representative of the youth of Turkey. Shaw High School also is host to Ulrich Bingel, who is sponsored by Epworth Euclid Methodist Church and is an International Christian Youth Exchange Program student. Ulrich studies at Kant Gymnasium in Spandau (West Berlin), where he will return after his year with us. He earned his varsity letter in cross country and enjoys playing the guitar. The idea of changing classes for each subject and thereby being able to enlarge his circle of friends appeals to him. Ulrich lives with the Shelton family. 21 THE 1963 HOMECOMING QUEEN The 1963 Football Queen was Annette Zampino. She and her court added beauty and charm to an exciting game. During the half-time, Annette was crowned by Charles Little, President of Student Council. After the game a dance was held in honor of the Queen and our victorious team. 22 ANNETTE ZAMPINO Shaw High School Homecoming Queen 23 First Attendant: Sally Smith Second Attendant: Mary Beth Butterfield Princess: Bernadette Leone Princess: Diane Minardo Princess: Sue Ohlinger 24 The stage crew, under the guidance of Mr. Durkin, is invaluable in helping Shawâs assemblies and stage productions to run smoothly. Most students donât see the stage crew in action except when someone adjusts a microphone or moves the speakerâs stand a little to the right. This is only a fraction of their job. Their other responsibilities include lighting, curtain-pulling, and swift set changes, which add up to successful staging. STAGE CREW First Row: M. McNeill. S. Mazur. B. OâLeary, C. Chasar. J. LE MASQUE Le Masque is a club dedicated to all students who appreciate the arts. Some of this yearâs activities included trips made to various theaters to see plays of special interest. The meetings which followed were sparked by lively discussions of these plays. Their other meetings often included skits written and presented by the play production class. At various times they also had guest speakers who lectured on some facet of the arts. Members of Le Masque were responsible for all of the behind-the-scenes work on Shawâs fall production, Medea, and also the Black and Red Review. 25 SHUTTLE STAFF AND EDITORS SHUTTLE WORKERSâS. The council plans dances, buys records, decorates Korb Center at Christmas time, and furnishes the Lounge inside and out. Canteen is a selective organization. Prospective members submit applications which are screened by a committee. The committeeâs selections are then voted on by the entire council, and the winners in each grade are announced on Honor Day. Members attend regular Monday night meetings and work at every dance. AND SPEECH CLUB While still very new to Shaw, NFL Speech Club, sponsored by Mrs. Greaney, has made great strides toward becoming one of its most active organizations. This past year Speech Club has successfully promoted the first year of Shaw's weekly closed-circuit television show, SHS, TV News. This organization has also served the school by selling programs at the home football games this season. Speech Club hosted for the second year a Greater Cleveland Speech League Tournament at Shaw in the Fall and also sponsored its Second Annual Novice Debate Tournament in February. In December, Speech Club held an induction ceremony for those attaining National Forensic League membership, and the ceremony was successfully combined with a Christmas party. Aside from its many other activities, the club's main function has been the participation of its members in intcrscholastic Speech tournaments held on Saturdays throughout the school year. The members have participated in declamation, oratorical, extemporaneous, and debate contests. SPEECH CLUBâTop Row: N. Harding, R. Walton. T. Liptak. V. Blanco. T. Butler, A. Spikell. B. Howell, G. Members of National Honor Society are selected on the basis of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. At the beginning of each semester the Society elects officers and selects four members to speak on these four goals. These speeches are given at the assembly near the end of the semester, during which names of newly selected members are read to the excitedly expectant students. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY FALL SEMESTER STUDENT COUNCIL The first semesterâs Student Council sponsored many projects; among them were the sale of duffel bags and pennants, distribution of identification passes, and the United Appeal drive. The members also continued to support their foster child from Korea and corresponded with her regularly throughout the year. Small classes in the qualities and responsibilities of leadership were conducted by those Council members who had attended similar classes at Kent State University last summer. Despite all this work, the members also found time to enjoy themselves at their All-School Party and unique Hootenanny. OFFICERSâC. Little. President; B. Howell, Vice President; D. Minardo. This Council went above and beyond those of the past few years. By directly informing and showing the entire student body and faculty the purpose of Student Council and how they can benefit from it, much interest and enthusiasm was aroused. This semesterâs Council also provided a chance for more of the student body to take an active part in its work. Improvement in all phases of student government was part of the challenging program taken on. Preparation for the addition of a ninth grade and an increase in student population to over 2,000 was uppermost in the minds of the officers and the new advisor, Mrs. Juergens. A start towards closer school-community relations and teaching students more efficient and responsible self-government, along with the addition of a vastly improved and stable constitution, were part of the things accomplished this semester. Under some of the best leadership in years, the Council found time to revise the student handbook, tend to the allschool party, handle Council and May Queen elections, and sponsor a car wash. Our hats are off to one of the best Councils and sets of officers that we have seen in a long time. We know that following Student Councils will really have to work to keep up with the line example shown us this semester. This darling little boy is also a part of Shaw's Student Council. Jin Shik is Student Councilâs eight-year-old foster child from Korea. The monthly exchange of letters with him has been a spot of joy in the Council for the three years that they have supported him. They also performed for the Home and Flower show, the L.F..L. Festival, the Halleâs Seasonal Caroling, and the June and January commencements. Mrs. Honess is a familiar face to many Shaw Choir members, for she was the vocal director for the Kirk Choir and other Kirk musical groups in past years. Fun and pleasure are only two of the rewards enjoyed by Shaw Choir members, for they learn good a repertoire of music, improve vocal techniques and benefit from the thrill of performing and interpreting music for others. 39 Top Row: B. A few of the musicians also had the honor of participating in the L.E.L. Orchestra. The Black and Red Review was another important event for both musicians and actors; it took a great deal of work, but the final success of the program made it a worthwhile experience. 41 Our Orchestra at practice 42 Top Row: C. They also appeared at the High School Band Day held in conjunction with the Baldwin-Wallace-C presented on Washington's Birthday. Many members of the band competed in the Greater Cleveland Solo and Ensemble Contest at Parma Senior High School in February. In celebration of National Music Week in the month of May, the band along with the orchestra and choir performed a spring concert. The activities for the year closed traditionally as the band participated in the East Cleveland Memorial Day Parade. 43 Vocalists: B. AbramczykâSoprano. A. BcvanâSoprano, B. GallionâTenor. E. RHYTHM TEENS The Shaw High Rhythm-Teens have been captivating audiences with their smooth and lively performances for many years. In 1953 the music directors of Shaw High School originated this novel group; since then, many other schools have become interested and have duplicated this organization. Each spring sixteen singers and sixteen instrumentalists evolve triumphant after competing with hundreds for the few coveted memberships. The final thirty-two performers are those who prove to be the most vivacious, the most interested, and the most musically talented for modern stage presentations. This extra-curricular group schedules rehearsals throughout the summer and continues one night a week during the school year. The music performed satisfies the students' desire to accomplish something in the style of that seen on T.V., the Broadway stage, or radio and includes numbers from recent and popular hits to old favorites to the complicated rhythms of today's dance. There is never more than a one-third holdover in the personnel from year to year, yet the Shaw Rhythm-Teens have maintained a consistently high standard of performance. This year, under the direction of S. Robert Fraser and Ruth Honess, the Rhythm-Teens are again fulfilling a very busy schedule of performances. 44 List of engagements held: Downtown KiwanisâSheraton Cleveland Hotel, Cleveland Room Open HouseâSuperior School Salvation ArmyâSalvation Army Rehabilitation Center Downtown RotaryâStatler Hilton Downtown Exchange ClubâCarter Hotel Ballroom Kiwanis InstallationâSheraton Cleveland Hotel Chambers PTAâChambers School Keynoters ClubâSheraton Cleveland, Gold Room Cleveland Hgts. Fischer decapacitates paper hoop on his only carry of year. âChamps weâll be in â63!â What a perfect slogan that proved to be, as the Shaw High Cardinals, under head coach Don Drebus, won the undisputed Lake Erie League crown with a record of six victories and one lonely loss in league competition. A consistently fine team effort plus typical Shaw spirit on the part of both players and students showed that size is the only department in which our school is last in the L.E.L. It was an exceptionally memorable season for the Cardinals, rated one of the five best high school teams in the Greater Cleveland area. The Cardinals made their early start a successful one by trouncing a stubborn John Adams eleven, 28 to 22. on September 6 at Shaw Stadium. Shaw rolled up 344 yards on the ground, most of that figure belonging to two season-long standouts, tailback Mike Malec and sophomore fullback Mel Carter. The TDâs came on a 20-yard dash by quarter Joe Chernay, runs of 29 and 28 yards by Carter, and a 12-yard bolt by Charles Wheeler. Co-captains Elmer Novak (left) and Dennis Vaughn were mainstays on Shaw line. On the following Saturday, Shaw visited Berea Midpark for another independent tilt. The Meteors, fielding their first varsity football team, pulled off a 14-12 upset with the aid of Shaw fumbles and penalties. Midpark twice capitalized on Cardinal bobbles to score. Shaw drove for two second-half touchdowns on five-yard runs by Carter and Malec, but was unable to make any of the crucial extra points, the final attempt falling inches short. 80 Malec lugs the leather against Collinwood. taking a kickoff up the middle . . . . . . and sprinting for the sideline following a later punt. This frustrating defeat was followed by a thrilling 6-6 deadlock with ancient rival Collinwood before the usual overflow crowd at the home grounds. The Birds scored the first time they got the ball, starting to move with a 45-yard aerial to winger Pete Wolfgram from Pat Visci, who took over the driverâs seat for good with this game. Two plays later Pat completed another to end Joe Jenkins for the TD. The Railroaders counted on a 37-yard pass play early in the second quarter, ending the scoring but not the excitement. The last play of the third period saw Robin Caputo take a Visci throw 37 yards. The drive reached the Collinwood five in the final quarter, but the massive defensive line held Shaw on downs. The Cardinals got the ball back and were again knocking on the goal line after two long runs when time ran out. A capacity throng at the Stadium stayed âtil the final gun for Shawâs hair-raising league opener, a 20-18 squeaker over tough Brush. Carter and Malec scored to give Shaw a 14-12 halftime edge, but the Arcsâ third-quarter touchdown put them in front, 18 to 14. With less than live minutes left in the game, the Cardinals took over on their own 26. A fourth-down pass from Visci to Caputo for 26 yards and a 13-yard toss to Jeff Schultz helped Shaw drive to the one, where Carter scored with seconds left. The Cards next took a 33-18 Homecoming verdict from Shaker, building a 26-0 lead. Malec ran 54 yards for a TD and scored on a dazzling 85-yard kickoff return as Shaw breezed past the Raiders. The tension shows in Shaw and Brush players not piled on fullback Mel Carter, who fights to the Arcs' half-yard line with only 36 seconds remaining. Next play saw Carter cross the goal line for the Cardinals most exciting victory. 81 Malcc continued to sparkle the following week in the crucial 14-8 win over Euclid. He rambled 85 yards untouched with a Panther punt and ran four yards to score both Shaw touchdowns. The real honors, however, went to the defense. After a blocked punt, they held Euclid on downs deep in Shaw territory with seconds to play. This victory put Shaw on top in the L.E.L. The Cardinals returned to the Stadium to make high-ranked Valley Forge their fourth straight victim, 24-6. The first-string defense held the Patriots scoreless, while Shaw's four tallies included short runs by Visci and Carter and scoring passes from the diminutive signal-caller to Fred Klaass and Jenkins. Pat, who received PresStar recognition for his fine play, wowed the crowd with a 65-yard punt after chasing a soaring pass from center into his own end zone. Next on the schedule was the all-important showdown with the defending league champ, Lakewood. In one of the closest and hardest-fought contests of the season, the rugged Rangers tied Shaw for the L.E.L. lead with a 20-16 victory. The Cardinals counted on runs by Visci and Wheeler. Lakewood fought off Shaw twice late in the fourth period to pull out the win. i Carter leaves Patriots in the dust on big screen pass play. A Brush runner fights for lost cause against Shaw defense. Visci nears collision following first down run around end. Shaw came back for a 6-0 âmustâ victory at Parma in a veritable sea of mud and a steady rain. The Cardinals counted in the first quarter on a 38-yard sprint by Carter. The Rcdmcn's only threat was turned back with time running out in the fourth period when Malcc intercepted a wayward Parma pass deep in his own territory. The Cardinal defense, led by PresStar Denny Vaughn, was impenetrable, holding Parma to only 113 yards in total offense. So the Cardinals moved into the final game of the season on November 8 tied with Lakewood for the league lead. Heights was scheduled to visit Shaw. A victory over Heights plus a win by Euclid over Lake-wood would bring Shaw the crown. The Birds fulfilled their end of the bargain with a 26-8 conquest, scoring on runs by Malcc, Wheeler, and Carter and a pass from Visci to Jenkins, who simply outran the Tigersâ secondary on a 77-yard play. With time running out on the scoreboard clock, everyone tensely awaited news of the Euclid-Lakewood game. Would the Cardinals once more be only co-champs, as in the two previous years? At last the announcement came: âItâs all over but the shouting! Letâs have a cheer for our L.E.L. champs!â Euclid had come through, and Shaw High was all alone on top of the world. Recognition is due to all who helped make it a banner year for Shaw football. Three players were all-league choices: little quarterback Pat Visci, who guided the attack nearly all season; end Fred Klaass, sure-handed receiver; and linebacker Pete Davet, a deadly and consistent tackier. Although singling out individuals isnât easy, praise must go to several others. Mel Carter averaged 4.6 yards a carry and led in scoring with 54 points; Mike Malcc averaged 4.2 and scored 42 points; Charlie Wheeler picked up 5.7 yards a crack. Joe Jenkins snagged 17 passes and Robin Caputo 15. The work of boys like Denny Vaughn, Elmer Novak, Mai Albritton, Joe Chernay, and Pete Wolfgram was indispensable. Congratulations to players, coaches, and students for an unforgettable year! A Panther has Malec as official comes to a screeching halt. 83 Hail the coming of the champs! Its record of two victories, five defeats, and a tie is a deceiving one. In no game were Shaw's sophs badly outplayed or routed, and several losses came as a result of bad breaks. For example, the Cardinals dropped a heartbreaking 6-0 decision to league champion Cleveland Heights when the Tigers pounced on an untimely fumble in the Shaw end zone. Even in the seemingly lopsided loss to Shaker, Shaw kept the pace until the final minutes of the first half, when the Red Raiders converted a couple of interceptions into two quick touchdowns. They scored another in the same way just after the start of the second half to put the game out of reach. Consistently good work was turned in by signal-caller Mickey McNeil and end Gary Colavecchio, who frequently teamed up for TDâs on the J.V.âs most profitable play, a quick down-and-out throw following a fake into the line. Also worthy of recognition were guard Tom Izzo, wingback and defensive end Clayton Burroughs, and Van Tyus, left halfback who doubled as a safety on defense. 84 IMPROVED HARRIERS LOOK AHEAD-TEN TO RETURN I TRUCK Bottom Row: Harry Cargill, Chuck Coiner, Bob Kreutzberg. Our cross-country squad provided stiff opposition for nearly every opponent, in spite of winning only one meet. The scoring system awards one point for a runner finishing first, two for a second-place finish, and so on. The team score is the sum of the scores of its first five finishers, so the team with the lowest total wins. You can see that one or two late finishers in its top five can raise a teamâs score considerably, and that a final score with ten or twelve points difference is much closer than it looks. One of the seasonâs high spots was the performance of junior Chuck Coiner, running cross-country for the first time. Chuck cracked the record for Brush's course with a 10:36 over the two-mile grind. His best time on Shawâs Forest Hills route, by far the Lake Erie Leagueâs toughest, was an 11:03, threatening Jerry Harbakâs record for the course. The Shaw standard is Harbakâs 10:19 clocking at the 1961 state meet. It isnât fair, however, to compare times made on different courses, since the only requirement is that the course be two miles long and there is wide variation. Chuck also took thirteenth place in the District meet. Another standout was senior Bob Denning, who matched Coinerâs time on the home course and finished fifteenth in L.E.L. competition. Also lettering were Ulrich Bingel, Gary Speidel, Jim Dunn, soph Kirk Warner, and Jim Warded, the last three of which will return with Coiner next year. Prospects look bright for coach Stallsmithâs squad, which will retain ten of its top thirteen runners. Also league champs were Bob Turner and Shaw 2 Euclid 3 Bill Chambers, who teamed up to take every second doubles match. Shaw 4 Valley Forge 1 Bruce Scharschmidt was consistently tough in first singles, suffering Shaw 5 Shaker Heights 0 several defeats by extremely narrow margins. The Birds soared to a 17-4 overall ledger and deadlocked Lakewood for league honors at 12-2. TOURNAMENT GAMES Shaw 70 Mayfield 55 Shaw 78 Wickliffe 55 Shaw 58 St. Joseph 66 88 The speedy and hot-shooting Cardinals got off to a halting start in their drive for their 12th L.E.L. title in 37 recorded years, dropping a tense opener at Euclid, 56-53. But they got on the winning track with 42 free throws, including 14 straight by Jim Wardell, to crush rival Collinwood, 96-68. Lefty Bill Howell's 27 points paced Shaw to an important 73-63 first L.E.L. win over tough Valley Forge. An easy conquest of Brush, a hard-fought victory over Parma, and a surprisingly resounding romp over Shaker then lifted the Birds to first place and got them into high gear. Shaw added a comeback win over Heights for six straight. Billy shows his southpaw stuff to Collinwood as Drew waits. The Cards hit a snag the following week, luckily in an independent game, a 76-71 loss to tall Boardman. They bounced back with a handy triumph over Lincoln. Then, in one of the season's high spots, Ed Brumfield's eight last-quarter points helped lift Shaw to a 57-53 victory at Lakewood. Howell continued to lead the scoring in the Parma win and the squeaker over Euclid. The Cardinals needed twenty first-half points by Brumfield against Valley Forge and a record 25 rebounds by Drew Byers against Brush to keep the victories coming. Strong comebacks against Shaker, U.S., and Heights gave Shaw 15 of its last 16 games and set the stage for the L.E.L. finale, with Lakewood invading. A frantic foulshooting contest wound up in a narrow 65-62 defeat and a tie for the title. Big Drew gets some opposition, but stretches for two more. 89 Hddie takes it all the way in for two against the Patriots. I Fifth Out of 103 Standout performances by Pat Visci, Bob Turner, and Brumfield kept Shaw in the Euclid sectional tournament with victories over Mayfield and Wickliffc until the Birds ran up against a hustling and hot-hitting St. Joseph team. The score was tied as late as the middle of the third quarter, but St. Joe rallied to take it, 66-58. I his was one of Shawâs greatest teams in recent yearsâit tied the 1940 squadâs standard of 17 victories and hit a new offensive peak of 70.3 points per game. It had a consistently balanced attack with four or five players always in double figures, and showed great ability to bounce back. The Cardinals earned a final rating of fifth in the Greater Cleveland area, comprising some 103 schools. They were also the first Shaw five to reach the finals of the sectional tourney since 1950. Howell with that left-handed jumper again! 90 The Cardinals won the season battle of the boards. 899-626. Look Out Next Year, Too! Top-notch performance was almost commonplace. Howell shattered the old season scoring mark with 322, 15.6 per game. Byers, 6'8 center, set a new rebound standard with 268, an average of 12.8 per contest. Brumfield, only a junior, pulled down 249 rebounds and was third in scoring. Visci, 5'6 junior guard, was dependable scoring help for Howell and compiled the second highest number of assists in school history. Wardell, who will also return next year, showed he can do the job in scoring and under the boards. Jim Mori-son was the team's top defensive player and could get the points when necessary, as could the scrappy Turner. Dropping only two-point games to Valley Forge and Parma, they compiled the L.E.L.âs top ledger at 12-2. It was the sophsâ great come-from-bchind ability which kept them in the winning column. They rallied from a first-half deficit to win six times in all. Probably the most memorable of these comebacks came in the second Shaker game, when Shaw trailed by 18 entering the second half, but set the stage for victory by burying the Raiders, 24-6, in the third period. Tops in scoring were backcourt men Clayton Burroughs and Van Tyus. Burroughs kept the Cardinals in many a contest with his long jumpers, while Tyus showed both outside accuracy and elusiveness inside the key on drives. Although only 5'11 , Ed âBobcatâ Williams was the leading rebounder by a wide margin and hit on 42% of his shots. Plans for next year call for building and improvement. The first full crop from Kirk will produce a team primarily made up of sophomores and juniors. The Cardinals lost many very close meets and had more than their share of bad breaks in an extremely rugged schedule. In the process, however, they erased eight of the ten major Shaw records. To show how narrow most of the defeats were, the scoring system awards points on a 5-3-1 basis in individual events, but gives seven to the team winning a relay and none to the loser. Thus a defeat by as much as 13 points could have been turned into victory had Shaw taken a relay they lost, often by tenths of a second. Shaw finished fourth in what is probably Ohio's toughest league, third in its top district, and 13th in a 60-team field advancing to Columbus. For the first time in their eleven-year history, the Euclid Relays went to the Shaw tankers. These thirty-two girls have been required to take a written test and also a skill test; the scores of both being considered when the applicants were chosen. To become a member of Athletic Council is a goal for which most G.A.A. participants strive. Each girl belonging to A.C. helps to keep the G.A.A. program running smoothly. A sport head is appointed for each activity, and this girl, with her assistants, prepares time schedules for the various teams to play, sets up the different teams, and records the number of absences of each G.A.A. member. A member of Athletic Council aids in the gym classes daily, and she receives fifty points a semester toward her G.A.A. trophy. This yearâs Athletic Council, under the direction of Mrs. Caroline Larsen, is led by Belva Blankschacn, President; Mary Ann DiGiamcomantonio, Vice-President; Marilyn Graham, Secretary; and Beth Taylor, Treasurer. Participation in this organization is a rewarding and satisfying experience for any member of the Girlsâ Athletic Association at Shaw High School, and every girl who is interested in becoming a member of A.C. is urged to fill out an application. 104 Sally Smith Martha Trombley Betty Workman Nancy Wellman G.A.A. RALLY Hach September the members of the Girls Athletic Council prepare and present a âG.A.A. rallyâ to stimulate the interest of prospective G.A.A. members. Several skits are given by the girls in charge of each sport and their assistants. These skits are centered around one main theme, such as a âCircusâ presented in September of 1963. Only the girls of Shaw attend this rally, and almost all of them seem to enjoy the humorous skits. With the enthusiasm and interest that this rally promotes, the G.A.A. drive is always a great success. And what G.A.A. sport is this? 105 GIRLS'ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION The Girlsâ Athletic Association is one of the most popular clubs at Shaw. This is a sports program for girls who arc interested in participating in any of the following activities: trampoline, line soccer, bowling, tumbling, volleyball, swimming, basketball, badminton, ping-pong, or softball. Every girl attending Shaw is eligible for membership in this organization; a fee of twenty-five cents a semester is the only requirement. There are ten points given to each girl every time she is present on a G.A.A. night, with each sport lasting three weeks and being worth fifty points. Extra points are given to winning teams and to those girls who help with officiating. After a girl has received four hundred points, she is entitled to a letter S; with eight hundred points she will receive a gold bar; with twelve hundred and fifty points a gold pin is earned; and with an accumulation of fifteen hundred points a girl will receive an engraved trophy. Many girls try to earn fifteen hundred points because receiving a trophy is certainly the result of hours of enjoyment and is considered quite an honor! The Girlsâ Athletic Association is a rewarding experience for every girl attending Shaw. She is taught sportsmanship and skill; at the same time she enjoys herself as part of a team. Most of the girls at Shaw belong to G.A.A. and find it a very worthwhile experience. i Mary Ann grazes the ceiling while executing the Russian Splits during G.A.A. Trampoline. ARMY - NAVY The highlight of the girlsâ sports season is the Army-Navy basketball game. This year was no exception, as the Navy Varsity crushed the Army team by a score of 32-21 in a thrilling exhibition of the girlsâ athletic ability. Although many were witness to the fine playing of members of both teams, few people actually know of all the effort which is put into the preparations for the big clash. Besides practicing hard every night for two weeks before the contest, the girls themselves, under the capable direction of the managers they choose, must make posters and floaters, prepare a skit for the rally, and sell tickets. But it is all worth it, since the big night is filled with excitement, fun, and a sense of accomplishment. The J.V. girls and the cheerleaders, also, must work hard to prepare for the game. Much credit must be given to Mrs. Larsen for her assistance to both teams. This year the valuable player was probably Navy's Gloria Brown, a junior. She made 7 field goals in 13 attempts and threw in 7 foul shots out of 9 tries for a total individual score of 21. The 5'3 Brown also led the rebounding department with 8 grabs. Leading the scoring for Army was senior Ellen Shrader, who played forward. She hit 3 times from the field and made 3 free tosses for a total of 9 markers. Other scorers were: Becky Baker, Marilyn Graham, Betty Workman, and Marion Ba-brauckas of Army; Mary Ann CiGiacomantonio, Sally Smith, Martha Trombley, Lorene Dornback, and Diane McGaughey of Navy. The J.V. game was a test of defensive play with the Army team winning 14-1 1. Even though the game was not a high-scoring one, several girls showed a great deal of fight and scrappiness, and seem promising for next year's contest. 113 First Row: Elaine Copeland. Following the business meeting, the girls practice in the water. Becoming a member of Catalina Club is considered to be quite an honor. A series of swim clinics are held where different skills and formations are taught. After these clinics are over, a tinal selection is made. Girls are chosen on the basis of skill, gracefulness, and form. If any girl in Shaw is interested in synchronized swimming, she should not hesitate to try out for Catalina Swim Club.
