Of all of the community's responsibilities the job of education is the most important. New leaders and new ideas will be needed in the future and it is the school’s job to educate the people who will come up with the new ideas, be the new leaders, and contribute in other ways to society. Although the few years spent in school require a small portion of a person’s life, they may be its greatest influence. Whether it’s the latest method of mass-production, the newest interpretation of an old English play, the quickest solution to an algebraic equation, or the most beneficial exercise for the strength of a leg muscle, new things are being taught everyday. Shaw High is no exception to the rule. At Shaw education of all sorts is the objective; not only education of the mind, but that of the social being as well. 4

From Nela Park up on the hill to the new firehouse down on Shaw, East Cleveland is a growing community. No longer the small town it was years ago, it is now a full grown city with a city’s problems and responsibilities. It must not only keep things running smoothly in the present, but out of necessity it must plan for the future. 3

With the latest methods of education available the teacher passes his knowledge on to the student either in large groups, through television classes, or individually in the quiet of an unused classroom. The student teaches himself not only through homework, but through his activities outside of the classroom. Whether he's swimming in the pool, practicing in the language lab, or working on a project for Student Council, he is giving himself the education he’ll need to carry out his own plans for life. He, too, is working towards progress, and at Shaw opportunities are virtually unlimited. 5
