the shaw high school publications class for 1963 presents the shaw high shuttle 1963 Progress: The forward movement of the world, the country, the community, and the individual. The world keeps going around, and amidst all of its problems and conflicts it expands both forward, and upward into space. The country follows along as a part of the world, and contributes to both its conflicts and its progress. The community is both dependent and independent of the country. Directly it works for its own betterment and indirectly it profits the nation, and the world. But most important is the person who, through making himself what he is, helps make the world what it is. 2 From Nela Park up on the hill to the new firehouse down on Shaw, East Cleveland is a growing community. No longer the small town it was years ago, it is now a full grown city with a city’s problems and responsibilities. It must not only keep things running smoothly in the present, but out of necessity it must plan for the future. 3 Of all of the community's responsibilities the job of education is the most important. New leaders and new ideas will be needed in the future and it is the school’s job to educate the people who will come up with the new ideas, be the new leaders, and contribute in other ways to society. Although the few years spent in school require a small portion of a person’s life, they may be its greatest influence. Whether it’s the latest method of mass-production, the newest interpretation of an old English play, the quickest solution to an algebraic equation, or the most beneficial exercise for the strength of a leg muscle, new things are being taught everyday. Shaw High is no exception to the rule. At Shaw education of all sorts is the objective; not only education of the mind, but that of the social being as well. 4 With the latest methods of education available the teacher passes his knowledge on to the student either in large groups, through television classes, or individually in the quiet of an unused classroom. The student teaches himself not only through homework, but through his activities outside of the classroom. Whether he's swimming in the pool, practicing in the language lab, or working on a project for Student Council, he is giving himself the education he’ll need to carry out his own plans for life. He, too, is working towards progress, and at Shaw opportunities are virtually unlimited. 5 CONTENTS Faculty Page 7 Seniors Page n Activities Boys Sports Page 45 Page 79 Girls Sports Page 103 Undergrads Page us -F Senior Index Page 143 FACULTY The teacher. Some like him, some don’t; hut no matter which, he is the teacher. He gives a hit of himself to each student and hopes that we’ll be better for it. This is being done as a fitting gesture of respect to the memory of a man of honesty and integrity in all things, a man of meticulous dress, manners, and speech, of few words but great deeds, of quiet dignity and humility with respect to his personal achievements, for he took great pride in the contribution of Shaw students and faculty in maintaining and improving the position and reputation of our school and the East Cleveland School System. This Gymnasium, completed in 1953, is a tribute to his leadership in providing both educational and recreational facilities for youth. Three years ago a new structure with lounge, pool and music center was his final contribution to the youth of the community. The Board of Education fittingly named the structure the “KORB CENTER” in his honor. Dr. Korb served as our Superintendent of Schools for 21 years. He also served as a trustee of Kent State University. Many Shaw graduates in recent years received scholarships or grants-in-aid to Kent State through his efforts. Only last week I mailed him material concerning a member of this year’s June class, for his use in assisting another Shaw student towards a college education. All of us here this morning have lost a friend and benefactor. Some may question the propriety of a rally here this morning. Those of us who knew Dr. Korb well have no doubt about his personal opinion as to its propriety. He would have wanted it to be this way. As a small measure of our respect and affection for this man and our sympathy to Mrs. Korb and the surviving sons and their families, I ask you all to stand, face the Shaw Banner, and bow your heads for 30 seconds of silence in his memory. Wayne C. Blough November 21,1962 16 Much changed since the sophomore of three years back, the senior has accepted high school as a way of life. Three years at Shaw have prepared him for four at college or a lifetime in the world. It will be hard, he admits, to get used to the idea of not going to school everyday, but what lies ahead may possibly be better. They may be, depending on the individual, a source of satisfaction or a source of education more valuable than that received in some classrooms. School can be fun, and activities help make it so. ACTIVITIES FALL SEMESTER STUDENT COUNCIL The fall semester version of Student Council had a membership of sixty-four, the largest in its forty two year history. This year a special effort was made to impress upon the student body the importance and value of the Council. Speeches on this subject at election time brought this idea to focus. Besides taking care of elections, sponsoring dances, and taking charge of social and guest passes, the Council played a vital part in Shaw's Student life. The Christmas decorations in front of the building, the activity sign on Euclid, and the check on all drinking fountains were undertaken by the Council. The Council also looked beyond Shaw’s corridors, Jin Shik a seven year old Korean, was adopted through the Foster Parent Plan. Student Council is an important and beneficial aspect of Shaw for both its members and the students it represents. OFFICERS. Bottom Row—Peggy Crysler (Sec.). Besides being in charge of the majority of Shaw’s weekly dances it plans special dances, decorates Korb Center at Christmas, buys records, and takes care of the needs of the Lounge inside and out, such as buying fans and geraniums. Prospective members submit applications which are screened by a committee. The committee’s selections are voted on by the entire Council, with the winners from each grade announced on Honor Day. Members attend regular meetings at the Lounge on Monday evenings and work at every dance. The highlight this year was the “Christmas in the Alps Party” held in December. The Lounge was decorated with a small forest to resemble a ski lodge. With students in ski sweaters and slacks, the setting was brought to life. Canteen also sponsored a special Alumni Dance at which a band of college musicians was featured. It was a very rewarding social sesaon for the Council and thus the Shaw student body. 50 PEP CLUB PEP CLUB CABINET. Bottom Row—Vicki Cirino (Pres.). French club was one of the fastest growing clubs in the school, open to all french students and everyone else who had an interest in France in general. Their goal was to learn more about France, its people and customs. This year’s activities included a Christmas party “a la francaisc.” GERMAN CLUB This year to become acquainted with Germany, the German Club planned many enjoyable activities. In addition to holding meetings after school and singing popular German songs, a trip to Schoenbrunn, parties, and guest speakers highlighted the club’s most interesting season. These speeches are given at the assembly near the end of the semester, during which names of newly selected members arc read to the excitedly expectant students. This year's assembly was especially memorable because it inaugurated closed-circuit television at Shaw, one of the most up-to-date methods used by schools for education and entertainment. Motto Brazil . . . Italy ... the Philippines . . . American Field Service has brought the peoples of the world to the doors of Shaw. The purpose of AFS is to promote understanding among the youth of the world. This year Shaw had three students, representing South America, Europe, and Asia, who helped to carry out the AFS aim. Walter Cabral was Shaw’s first South American AFS student. He came from Forteleza, Brazil, and stayed with Pat Noon's family while studying at Shaw. Shaw was fortunate in receiving a second AFS student this year. Andrea Honorati came to Shaw in November from Alcona, Italy. His foster brother was Mike Billington, with whose family he lived. Bitsy Rose spent last summer in Kidapawan, Philippines, where she learned much of the Filipinos' way of life and of their warm personalities. While there she attended the Central Mindanao Colleges. Thus, through upholding the AFS Motto, Shaw’s widening circle of understanding has expanded. Walter Cabral. Bitsy Rose. Andrea Honorati. HONORED ALARCON Spanish National Honor Society, with the aid of closed circuit television, has greatly expanded its yearly program. Under the direction of Mrs. Molho and Mr. Ameduri, classes which teach useful Spanish expressions and customs arc televised for the benefit of all Spanish students. The members of the Society enjoy many activities together. They have gone to a Spanish restaurant, and visited the Art Museum where special emphasis was placed upon the Spanish masters. After starting the school year with a “Meet and Greet” party. Friendship Club enjoyed many more successful activities. The usual fall fashion show and the dance, “The Autumn Leaves Ball” were two affairs the club also organized. Planning a Christmas service project and sponsoring the annual May Queen Dance were the perfect ending to one of the best years Friendship has had. The annual Autumn Leaves Ball. 60 The Queen and her court with attendants from left to right are: Karen Thiel, Russ Large; Marilyn Jones, Bruce Matte; Queen Phyllis Alexander. To carry out the theme, “Rhapsody in Blue,” the Lounge was decorated with blue lights and flowers. The dance climaxed a week of hectic preparation and strong competition. At an assembly the day before voting, the various committees participated in skits, an important part of the campaigning. After this humorous part of the program the candidates were presented to the student body on beautifully decorated floats. The Queen was escorted by Jack West. Touring hospitals and engaging speakers give the members a vivid first-hand view of their future as nurses. Compassion and concern for others, true characteristics of a nurse, were shown as the girls centered their projects around hospitalized children. LE MASQUE CLUB Le Masque Club this year was sponsored by Mrs. Barbara Beesley, one of Shaw’s new teachers. Le Masque began the school year by contributing to sports rallies with short skitsu for the pleasure of the student body. At each regular meeting a subject of dramatic interest was discussed. This spring Shaw’s annual Black and Red Review, directed by Mrs. Beesley, became a success largely due to the support of the Le Masque members who devoted their time and work after school for weeks before opening night. By making costumes, applying make-up, supplying props, and, of course, acting in the play, “Bye Bye Birdie,” each participating member was able to put his skills to work for the school. This small, select group, chosen from the best of the shop classes, exercised their construction skills this spring. All the sets for “Bye Bye Birdie” were built by the Crew. Stage Crew members: Nick Giancola (Manager) Neil Deasy Jim Hartory Phil Schoenen Tim LaRiche Eric Rohde 65 Did she say BODY and SOUL? 66 BLACK AND RED SCORES AGAIN WITH LIT ABNER “Li’l Abner,” Shaw’s spring musical, was the hilarious story of Daisy Mae’s hectic pursuit of the female-resistant Li'l Abner. Daisy’s (Jeanne Kutscher) plans to catch Abner (Lou Biscotti) on Sadie Hawkins Day go astray with the announcement of nuclear testing right in Dogpatch and with the kidnapping of Abner by crooks who want the formula of the strength-giving Yokumberry Ionic. Through the efforts of the Dog-patchers, led by Mammy (Fran Rohloff), Pappy (John Bernier), and that lovable bully, namely, Earthquake McGoon (Doug Scott), their homes are saved and Abner is returned to Daisy. “Li’l Abner” was the fourth Black and Red production directed by Mr. Mike Dugas, who this year attended Harvard University after having won a coveted John Hay Fellowship. There he studied drama in depth and soon will return to Shaw. 67 SERVICE CLUB Bottom Row—Joan Cole, Nancy Ebbert, Dorthea Sunderland, Belh Rumbold. Carole Thompson (Manager). Second Row—Kay Hermon. This was the first time the festival was held with eight schools participating. The choir also sang at the Home and Flower Show, on WJW radio, and at Halle’s. The music of the choir was much appreciated at the Veterans' Day assembly, the Christmas concert, the Spring concert, and the June and January commencements. The officers were: Art Philipp, President; Mike Billington, Vice-President; and Amy dayman, Secretary. While having fun, the choir worked hard preparing for concerts and enjoyed learning new numbers and improving their voices. 70 71 Bottom Row—Joyce Patton, Anne Psihountas, Peg Hensley, Linda Michal, Pat Bozik, Karen Ceasar, Cheryl Bcndcck, Marge Talbert, Beverly Abramczyk. Claudia Kraber. Judy Reid. The Shaw Hi-Liters, under the direction of Vicky Cirino and Barb Schcrbel, originated during the last few weeks of school last June. Tryouts were announced and the final decision determined the fact that the group would include two sophomores, four juniors, and six seniors in the regular line and a girl representing each class as an understudy. Through hard work and the willingness to practice, these girls combined their talents to perfect a completely new style of precision dance steps that were set into five flashy dance routines. Striking new uniforms accented the group's ability and rhythm. Accompanied by the modern tempo of the Shaw High School Band and Cardcttes, both under the direction of S. Robert Fraser, the Hi-Liters have created a completely new and exciting version of a football half-time show. 73 ORCHESTRA bottom Row—Dick Aiken. Pat McNair. Mary Ellen Scrota, Laura Kirby. The group joined forces with the choir to present the annual Veterans’ Day Assembly in November and combined with the other members of the music department for the Christmas Programs. The orchestra also furnished the traditional melodies at Commencement. The Lake Erie League Orchestra Festival was held at Lakewood High School this year, to which Shaw sent several of its outstanding musicians. Members also earned excellent ratings at the Solo and Ensemble Contest which took place in February. The highlight of the season was the musical production “Bye Bye Birdie’’ presented on April 4, 5, and 6. Due to the devoted practice and natural talent of these musical members of the student body the show was a complete success. 74 A NEW LOOK AT THE BAND Bottom Row—Marianne Marlin (Treas.), Dorothy Barnes. Robert Fraser, continued to be an enjoyable attraction at the football games. This season, however, there was more emphasis on musical arrangements than marching formations. Also, the marching band had an added feature, the Hi-Liters. Together they made the half-time shows a great success. The concert band performed in the midwinter concert, “Music Americana.” In March, Brush and Shaw gave a combined band concert held at Brush. The Spring Concert in May, had the band performing at its best. 76 VOCAL ENSEMBLE. Bottom Row—Sally Parsh, Margaret Maloney, Claudia Kraber, Ellen Bond, Chris Dreifort, Dee Dee Gower. With a beat, a band, and sixteen singers, ringing out in melody, the Rhythm Teens are welcome wherever they go. This year they were invited to play at the NEOTA convention. Also, they visited the Manger Hotel, Solon High School, and Sunny Acres Hospital. In January they helped the Band make the Midwinter Concert a success. The efforts of Mr. S. Robert Fraser and Miss Judith Warren are seen at each performance as the Shaw High Rhythm Teens display their musical ability. 78 BOY'S sports Experience is the best teacher. The Cardinals opened the season against East. It was a well played game for so early in the season but our offense couldn’t get enough sustained drives started. East’s speedy backs kept our defensive ends busy. Touchdowns were scored by Mike Malec and Bob Taskes. The final score was a 14-14 tie. Against our bitter rivals, Collinwood, they suffered their first loss of the season. The offense was more active but the defense couldn’t contain the Railroaders’ highly touted backs. Senior Bob Taskes put on a one-man show as he raced for all three Cardinal touchdowns. For his outstanding efforts, Bob was voted PrcsStar. The Cards outplayed Collinwood in every department except scoring 26-22. In search of their first victory of the season, the Cardinals traveled to Korb Field where they welcomed the Brush Arcs into the L.E.L. by soundly trouncing them 28-8. They trailed by an 8-6 score at the half but showed their desire to win by coming alive to score three touchdowns in the third quarter. Bruce Matte and Bob Taskes scored two touchdowns each as our offense again looked good. Out to avenge two successive losses against Shaker, we spilled the Raiders 28-0 through determined play and an all out effort. Bob Richards caught three touchdown passes from Bruce Matte, who scored one himself. For his tremendous play, Bob Richards was voted PresStar. The mighty Cardinals, fresh from two convincing L.E.L. victories, celebrated Homecoming by routing a strong Euclid eleven 36-6. Bruce Matte’s performance was brilliant as he personally broke down the Panthers by sprinting for four big touchdowns on runs of 1, 7, 41, and 60 yards and throwing a 29-yard scoring pass to Bob Richards. The defense also was quite impressive for the third game in a row. Bruce was named PresStar for his deeds of the evening. The Shaw gridders traveled to Parma to play the newest entry in the league, Valley Forge. The of- fense, paced by Matte’s touchdown arm, was too much for the spirited Patriots. After building up a commanding lead, Coach Drebus sent in the reserves to contain the Valley Forge gridders. The final score read in our favor, 36-20 Shaw’s fifth L.E.L. game of the season saw the showdown between the league’s only two unbeaten teams, Shaw and the Lakewood Rangers. The Cardinals scored the first time they got the ball and lead at the half 16-6. The field, which had just been cleared of a foot of snow, was a major factor in the outcome as our fleet backs and passing attack were checked. The final score was Lakewood, 18, Shaw, 16. This loss dropped the Cards into second place in the L.E.L. Realizing the importance of winning their remaining games, the determined Cardinals started out by halting the always powerful Parma Redmen, 21-6. This victory was particularly satisfying because the boys played before their Dads, who were honored on Dad’s Day. The Cards did their best as usual. Tim Shoda was named PresStar for his fine line play and defense. The final chapter of the ’62 season came on a rainy, muddy night at Cleveland Heights. The high-spirited Cards showed they could play under the worst possible conditions with good results. Bruce Matte scored our first touchdown and passed to Rog Peckinpaugh for the conversion. Just before the first half ended. Malic fired a scoring aerial to Bob Richards, who waded into the muddy end zone. The final score of the final game was 14-6. Congratulations to Coaches Drebus, Libertini, Burton, McVicker, and Adolph for bringing us the L.E.L. trophy. Congratulations to our heroes who gained recognition for their fine efforts: L.E.L. Quarterback Bruce Matte, L.E.L. Defensive End Tim Shoda, L.E.L. Offensive End Bob Richards, L.E.L. Center Don Highly, L.E.L. Defensive Tackle Marty Matus, and PresStar Bob Taskes. This was a fine team filled with desire, ability, and determination—a great team that never gave up. 81 Bruce Matte scores 1 of his 4 TD’s against Euclid. A Brush Arc eludes Bruce. The defense stops a Lakewood back for a loss. 82 Dodson leads the way as Matte piles up yardage against Shaker. Bob Taskes cuts back for a good gain against Lakewood. Robin Caputo makes the tackle. Matte breaks away for a score against Euclid. Bruce cuts up field against the Collinwood Rail- Two riddcrs S,°P Taskes for a short ®ain roaders. Taskes eludes three Railroaders as he sprints for a score. The end of a successful season. 84 J. V.'S SHOW PROMISE Bottom Row—Yurik, Williams, Dodson, McClung, Dillard. Gentry, Nimmons. Allen. The lone victory was an exciting one against Collinwood. The team, coached by Mr. Stallsmith, just didn’t have enough depth necessary for a winning season. The harriers lost five outstanding senior lettcrmcn to graduation, but Tom Muenger and Jim Thompson managed to lead the team with their good performances. Jim won his third letter and Tom won medals at the Brush Relays and the district meet. The boys anticipate a better record next season. 86 Bob Knaggs moves ahead of two Heights runners. Tim was a valuable member of the squad who showed great versatility as a rebounder, scorer, and playmaker. Jim was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder for the second straight season. Junior Mike Malec was the squad's second leading scorer. Pat Visci played exceptionally well for a sophomore, showing prowess as a scorer and playmaker. Bruce Matte was a member of the starting five before his graduation in January. 6'5 Jay Meyers and 6'8 Drew Byers were strong rebounders who could also score when necessary. Junior Bill Howell and Senior Larry Hanawalt saw plenty of action and performed well. This season produced many exciting victories. The second Euclid game was probably the most exciting in many years. The game was a typical Shaw-Euclid battle, highlighted by rugged play and an abundance of spirit. With thirty seconds left in the game, Bruce Matte sunk a long jump-shot to ice the contest. As Shaw fans poured onto the court, the scoreboard told the story; Shaw 55 to Euclid's 54. Tim Shoda paced the Cardinal attack with 15 points. In the 83-44 romp over Brush, Malec had 21 while Smalley added 20. In the 77-61 victory over Shaker, Malec paced the team with 22 as Smalley added 20 and Pat Visci chipped in 17 points. However the Shaw 3 Brush 5 team, under the leadership of Coach Thomas Mein- Shaw 0 Shaker 8 hardt, must be given much credit for the hard work Shaw 2 Parma 6 and the great deal of time they spent. Even though Shaw 0 Euclid 8 the team as a whole had a losing season, the follow- Shaw 2 Cleveland Heights 6 ing players proved outstanding: Tom Maremaa, who won a first place in the L.E.L. competition held at Forest Hill Courts, Dave Harley, Steve Webster, Bruce Scharsmidt, and Skip Schreck. 101 Vw INTRAMURALS GIRLS SPORTS Although not quite as avidly as the boys, many girls at Shaw participate in sports too. Whether it's soccer in the gym, or cheerleading out on the field, girls are realizing more and more the value and fun of athletics. Mary Ann DiGiamcomantonio Phyllis Woodworth President ADVISERS Now how do I get untangled? And you think you’ve got problems? Somebody down there better catch me! In volleyball it’s the hands that count. An exhilarating A.C. meeting. A.C., the governing body of G.A.A. and the girls’ gym classes, is sponsored by Mrs. Leah Johnson and Mrs. Nancy Deonise. The girls meet on Thursday mornings to plan the activities for the school year. Some of the events which were listed this past year besides the regularly scheduled G.A.A. nights were the LEL Playday (to which Shaw sent twelve representatives), volleyball tournaments at Heights, the annual Army-Navy game, and the Sports Splurge held for the entire school. The officers for the first semester were: Phyllis Woodworth, President; Joyce Johnson, Vice-President; Lois Spring, Secretary; and Marilyn Jones, Treasurer. Vice President Peg Crysler, Secretary Bonnie Andrews, and Treasurer Laura Carlson assisted Phyllis during the second semester. Watch the ball! Girls’ Athletic Association continues to be one of the largest and most popular clubs at Shaw. A membership drive—held at the beginning of each semester —saw over four hundred girls join by paying their dues of twenty-five cents a semester. For this small fee a girl may participate in such sports as volleyball, swimming, bowling, softball, trampoline, badminton, tumbling, ping-pong, soccer, and basketball. The high light of the year is the Army-Navy basketball game which climaxes the basketball season in the spring. For each sport in which a girl participates she is awarded a certain number of points, with extra points given to members of winning teams and those who help with officiating. On Honor Day awards are presented to girls on this point basis: four hundred points for a letter S, eight hundred for a gold pin, twelve hundred fifty for a key, and fifteen hundred for a trophy. Marilyn gracefully executes this difficult stunt. A refreshing dip in Korb Pool. OFFICERS. Sally Parsh (Treas.), Mary Ellen Serota (V. Pres.), Amy Klein (Sec.), Doris Holzheimer (Pres.). COLORFUL AQUATIC STARS SPARKLE Catalina Club, the girls’ synchronized swim organization, is one of the newest and rapidly-growing groups at Shaw. Organized this year under the direction of Mrs. Dconise, the girls spend countless hours practicing to improve their varied aquatic skills. Every Monday night they assemble for a business meeting. Following warm-up exercises, they practice in the water. To be considered for membership, a girl must attend a series of clinics at the beginning of the year where different skills and formations are taught. Try-outs arc held at the final clinic, with thirteen girls being selected this year. New members are: Mary Lou Weiland, Barb Dion, Linda Kwasney, Gerry Orr, Blanche Rowe, Pat Barton, Vicki Kennedy, Lois Anderson, Donna Wolfe, Sue Alstcdt, Peggy Hensley, Ellen Reed, and Linda Washkcwicz. Catalina girls had a very busy season this year. In November they participated in a playday with the synchronized swim club of Euclid Senior High School at Korb Pool. Several A.A.U. clinics and an overnight outing at Red Raider Camp were planned. Their annual water show was held in April with “Color” as the theme. 108 Inner Circle: Doris Holzheimer. Dianne Senger (Manager), The highlight of the girls’ sports program is the Army-Navy basketball game, which is put on completely by the girls. Two varsity and two J.V. teams are chosen from the outstanding players in G.A.A., with a manager for each team chosen by the respective team members. Besides participating in the game itself, the girls are in complete charge of the rally, tickets, cheerleaders, and publicity. All this must be accomplished in the frenzied two weeks preceding the game. To gain experience, the girls scrimmaged teams from Shaker, Euclid, and Brush. Under the watchful eye of Mrs. Leah Johnson the girls slowly molded themselves into smooth-functioning units, which were then presented to the enthusiastic students and parents at game time. Five girls who played their second year varsity received trophies; varsity players, gold basketballs; and J.V. members, gold medals. A more exciting and suspenseful twin-bill basketball night could not be imagined. The J.V. game kept the fans on their feet through the last few seconds before Army edged the Navy J.V. team 26-25. The varsity game was a demonstration of girls' basketball at its best. The teams had been selected so that they would be as near equal as possible, and they were. Navy, however, ran into serious foul trouble and also had a slight injury to its captain. At the final tally Army had won 35-28. No matter who wins, however, the winners and losers both agreed that the Army-Navy program is one in which they were proud and happy to have participated. 110 Where’d that sneaky little ball go? cries Phyllis. Ill Ellen Shrader Marilyn Jones Peg Crysler A familiar yet exciting sight at all Shaw football and basketball games are our peppy cheerleaders. Rain or snow, hot or cold, victory or defeat, they never cease their smiles or enthusiasm. A varsity cheerleader is chosen frbm among fifty or more eager applicants on the basis of jumps, coordination, personality, and cooperation. Selected for this year’s squad were Patt Havas, Ellen Shrader, Marilyn Jones, Lauren Visci, Basketball Captain Peg Crysler and Football Captain Amy dayman. Linda Perchan and her assistant Vicki Cirino serve as managers for the girls. Because of Shaw’s increased enrollment the girls were faced with the problem of having students seated on both sides of the gym during rallies. They responded to the challenge by becoming “two faced.” As always, the 1962-63 squad exhibited all their talents to the utmost and were truly an asset to the teams, the students, and all spectators. Patt Havas Amy dayman Lauren Visci CHEERLEADERS ARE TWO-FACED CHEERLEADER UNDERSTUDIES Nancy Wellman Nancy Rosser Mary Ellen Serota i This year our cheerleaders are fortunate enough to have three exceptional understudies ready at a moment’s notice to fill in for the regular girls in an emergency. Their help with skits, dances, new cheers, and songs, give them experience and practice which will help them later in their quest for a position on the varsity squad. JUNIOR VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Under the direction of their capable manager, Mary Lou Egan, the Junior Varsity Cheerleaders form a smooth-functioning unit, keeping up the spirit and excitement at all home J. V. games. No matter how few loyal fans arrive early enough for the J. V. games, their cheers always ring loud and clear for our team to hear. Bottom Row—Martha Trombley, Jeanne Mohorick.
