Second to None in 1961!” was me war chant of the 1961 Varsity football team. These words may sound boastful, but to Shaw students they were significant of the spirit that prevails in Shaw High School. Such words enable us to give our best in whatever we undertake and display courage, confidence, and good sportsmanship. This year’s football team was a good example of these qualities. A spirited group balanced by a strong offense and a powerful defense combined to provide Shaw with a winning team This year the Cardinals had an impressive record of seven wins and two losses. The losses, to Garfield and Shaker, didn’t put a stopper to the Cardinals’ spirit, and they bounded back to pound out two smashing victories over Lakewood and Heights, providing the spirit to conquer the Parma Redmen for the second year in a row. After the Parma victory, the Cardinals had one L.E.L. game left with Euclid. Our gridders were too much for the Panthers and Shaw became the victor. A loss to Parma by Shaker ended a hard-fought battle for the L.E.L. crown by splitting the championship three ways for Shaw, Parma, and Shaker. Congratulations, team, for carrying on the Shaw High tradition of spirit, sportsmanship, and victory. Hob Taskcs ends 10 yard run. Collinwood dummy polishes. The Shaw Junior Varsity had a fairly difficult season in 1961. They won one game, tied one and lost 5. Although the L.E.L. competition was rough, the team had a good coaching stall, and the boys played with strong determination. Jerry Novak was considered the most valuable player by the coaches. Outstanding for the team were Jim Fern, Dennis Vaughn, Dave Maiani, and Charles Wheeler. Milton Bley, with the exception of Jerry Novak, was considered the most consistent player. Experience gained this season by juniors and sophomores will undoubtedly provide the proper gridiron comeback for next season. Ken Golash A combination of determined offense and precision defense, led the Cardinals to their first victory of the season as they rallied over the invading Brush Arcs.” Scoring for Shaw were Matte, Golash, Richards, and Rick. Tony Rizzo The Coll in wood game was perhaps the most impressive Cardinal victory of the season. The final score was an indication of the quality that the Shaw gridiron men displayed. Matte, Golash, and Richards did the scoring for Shaw. Tony Rizzo gains against the Bulldogs. The Cardinals derail the Railroaders for a loss. The team traveled to Garfield to suffer their first loss of the year. Bad breaks and a faltering offense hampered the Cardinals as they went down to defeat. Although the Shaw defense was strong, it couldn’t hold back the roaring Bull-dogs. Bill Dorn back John Mingionc On Homecoming, Shaw and Shaker clashed in one of the most exciting games of the season. A touchdown called back because of a clipping penalty, and the determination of the Red Raiders gave Shaw its only L.E.L. loss of the season. Scoring the lone touchdown for Shaw was Bruce Matte. Bruce Matte goes over for the touchdown. It's the Cardinals all the way. John Bestvina Shaw's first L.E.L. victory was a hard fought contest against the Lakewood Rangers. A final burst of effort in the closing period of the game gave our Cardinals the victory as Taskes scored. A spirited Heights team fought desperately to defeat our Cardinals; but as many teams have found in the past, a powerful display by a churning backfield was too much for the Tigers. Golash and Matte went over the line for touchdowns. Bob Lcblang Bob Richards completes a long pass. Tony Rizzo scores the points after touchdown. m _ Bruce Stanek Shaw's excellent passing attack and fine defensive line handed Parma its only L.E.L. loss of the season. Parma went to the one yard line many times, but couldn’t penetrate the Cardinal’s defense. Austin and Rizzo did the scoring and two more points were added to the score as the “Redmen” were pushed back for a safety. Dale Lockwood Golash, Matte, and Richards trounced over the Euclid line for touchdowns as the Drebus Men” captured the L.E.L. crown. As Mr. Liber-tini predicted, the Cardinals “powdered” the panthers in spirit as well as in offensive and defensive plays. The Cardinals bring down a determined opponent. Ken Golash fights olf determined Panthers as he goes to the five yard line. Shaw spotted a determined Barberton team 14 points before the Cardinals gained control of the ball. After the first touchdown, it was smooth sailing to victory. Matte, Golash, Richards, and Rick all scored for Shaw. Bernard Sid Icy c o A C H E S Bottom Row: Louis Chulick. This year a new organization was formed under the direction of faculty advisor Mr. McVicker and president Glenn Lake. The boys’ gym leaders have had the responsibility of maintaining discipline, leading exercises, taking attendance, and supervising gym classes. To add to their pleasure they had a swimming party and dance after with the girls’ Athletic Council. The leaders are picked for their athletic ability and skill by Mr. McVicker. One of their highlights of the season was the halftime show they put on at one of the basketball games. Jerry Harbak sinks it for two more. Smalley takes the jump ball away from Massillon. Coach Tom Meinhardt's cagcrs started slowly, losing some close heart-breaking battles. They then revived with a brief winning streak before graduation, when high-scoring Jerry Harbak earned his diploma. A slow finish found the team in fifth place with an over-all season record of seven wins against 12 losses. Pete Hull was another outstanding performer who was chosen .co-captain along with Bob Wagner after Jerry Harbak graduated. One of Shaw’s most exciting games was their opening game with Collinwood which the Cardinal’s lost in over-time. With only two of the first-string members graduating, the 1962-63 team promises to be a winning, impressive basketball squad. Another opponents foul the referee didn't see! Senior grapplers included Jim Baker, Dave Cantwell, John D’Astolfo, Jay Lazar, Richard Littman, Dale Lockwood, Russ Martin, and Bob Rainey. John D’Astolfo earned the most valuable wrestler trophy; while Ed Morgan received a trophy for the most improved wrestler. In its most successful season the Junior Varsity triumphed in three Lake Erie League meets. Mr. Burton looks forward to having a much improved wrestling squad that might be a contender for the L. E. L. title next season with five sophomores and two juniors returning in seven of the eleven weight classes. 63 Tom Courtney exercises hurdle stretch. The 1961 cross country team was beyond a doubt, one of the finest teams in the history of Shaw High School. One of the outstanding members of the team was Jerry Harbak. Jerry’s individual record of seven wins and one loss was unmatched in the district. He placed first in the L. E. L. and won a gold medal for his efforts. In the district tournament the five Cardinals finished the race with fine scores, allowing Shaw High to finish seventh in the district. Jerry Harbak finished third, enabling him to compete in the state cross country meet at Columbus, Ohio. The others who finished in the district meet were Heckman, Thompson, Harding, and Courtney. Jerry practices for another record. A Spirited Cross Country Team Rottom Row: Dave Anderson, Dave O'Konck, Jim Watt, Lewis l wrence. Art Phillips. Although the Cardinal tank men finished the season with an unimpressive record of 2 wins and 11 losses, the spirit and ambition that prevailed throughout the season produced one of the finest swimming teams in several years. Even though they failed to capture meet honors, a few records were broken. Jim Walsh set a record in the 400 yard free style, breaking his previous record. Ron McQueen was beaten once in L.E.L. competition. Doug Scott and Bill Nelson were voted best all around, and Jim Tabor most promising. Our newest coaches. Costill and Jones. They’re Off! 65 Tennis Team Improves This year’s tennis team showed a great improvement over last year’s. The team was fine in form as were most of the individual players. Although the team lost 8 and won 3, it showed exceptional ability. The biggest surprise this year was a sophomore, Tom Maremaa, whose playing was astounding for a novice. Although several fine players will graduate soon. Coach Durkin has high hopes for a great team in the future. Top Mow: Joe DeLeese, Bob Wagner. Dave Harley. The most exciting meet of the season was the action with Brush. In this hard fought victory, the last race determined the outcome of the winning Cardinal combination in the mile relay. Under the coaching of Mr. McVicker and Mr. Stallsmith, the team set two new records: the 440-yard relay in 45.4 seconds, and the 880-yard relay in two minutes and thirty seconds. 68 Bottom Row: Bob Holchin, Dave Downs, Fred Ander- Gary Virnitk, Fred Herr, Tim Nimmo. This record is an improvement over last year’s record of 5 wins and 8 losses. In previous seasons it was difficult to get pitching and batting together. This year the two were well-coordinated. Phil Bolton and Bill Brelo came through for the team with excellent pitching. John Bestvina, a catcher, racked up the highest batting average of .422. Dave Vaughn came in second with a .357 average, and also led the team in R.B.I’s. Tom Haney stole the most bases, with a total of five for the season. The team batting average was an impressive .256, one of the highest team averages in the L.E.L. jy. ’s Have Impressive Season Compared to the 1960 season, the ’61 Junior Varsity baseball team, under the leadership of Coach Libertini, had an excellent record. Although it lost eight games and tied one, the nine had smashing vic- tories over Shaker, Heights, Parma, and Euclid. Twice the J.V.’s triumphed over Lakewood. In view of all these factors Coach Libertini foresees a successful season next year and a well organized team. 71 liottnm Row: Charles Apple. Stu Hoff. Tom Perry. Karl Schneider. The most outstanding change was in advisors, from Mr. Sivard to Miss Folmer. Next, council changed its foster child from a fourteen-year old Greek girl to a five-year old Korean boy. Certain procedures in campaigning for Student Council offices were also changed. Prospective candidates were voted on by council before petitions were distributed. The council also initiated new ideas. An Executive Committee consisting of Senior A's, officers, and committee heads was set up. This committee discussed major topics brought up at regular council meetings. Lastly, Student Council, as always, performed services for the school. It handled the United Appeal, a dance after the Barberton game, the All-School Party, the Football Queen Election and Homecoming, cleaned the L.E.L. pennants which hang in the gym, and tried to promote improved safety practices and behavior in the school. The members of National Honor Society arc chosen from the upper quarter of their class on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Twice a year an assembly is held to install the new members. At this assembly one member of the society speaks on each of the qualities required in every member. There is an air of excitement throughout the assembly for no one knows who is going to be chosen until the very end. To be a member of this society is quite an honor as only the more superior students are chosen. America Impresses Jesse Jessie Khashadurian, the exchange student from Lebanon, was highly impressed with Shaw and the United States. Life in the States is very fast. People work like machines, whereas in my country everything is slow. At any rate, I love the life here, and I shall say one thing that impressed me the most, honesty and friendliness. Everyone trusts each other, and Americans, I found, are the most friendly and kindhearted people.” Dave Enjoys Germany Dave Harley, the senior chosen as Shaw’s exchange student, spent quite an enjoyable summer. “Germany is the land of beer and sauerkraut, folkfests, and frauleins and Volkswagens. It is the romantic land of the Rhine and Mosel. Beneath this atmosphere of fun and sport, there lies a nation of warm and friendly people. Although they have had two wars devastate their homeland, everything has been rebuilt and Germany again holds its place among the leading nations of the world. Second to None in J61! Second to None in ’61!” was the motto for this year’s sixth annual football ticket selling campaign. Backed by school spirit and student participation, the drive earned over $5,000. A WERE disc jockey broadcasted the results of the campaign from the front lawn. Teams, captained by football players, canvassed assigned territories. Each grade competed for the $50 prom fund which was won by the Senior A’s and Junior B s. Mr. Louis, who returned to Shaw this year, originated 1 in 10,000, the first campaign of its kind in the state. 1961 Homecoming was on October 6. Shaw suffered its only L.E.L. loss to Shaker in an exciting game. Our Homecoming Queen, Laura Schweizer, was crowned. Both East Cleveland and Shaker celebrated their 50th anniversaries in a half-time ceremony. The game was followed by a dance for the students in the lounge, and one for the alumni in the gym. Meetings, held twice a month, are interesting and informative programs about France. Field trips to French exhibits at the Cleveland Museum of Art and to a French restaurant round out the club’s activities. Since the members are not all at the same level in their study of the French language, the meetings are conducted in English. The audience cheered the hero and hissed the villain of “The Drunkard”, a melodrama produced by Le Masque Club in November. The play written in all seriousness in 1844 was given a light touch and the result was hilarious. Dave Boylan acted the title role of Edward Middleton, a good man who is ruined by drink but is saved by Arden Rencelaw, Jim Le-Castre. Although she is menaced by the villainous Cribbs, Steve Shrader, the Drunkard’s wife, Ellen Gardiner, remains faithful throughout, and his daughter, Jeanne Kutscher, awaits his return. Through the efforts of Bill Dowton, Marty Harding, and his crazed sister Agnes, Fran Rohloff, the crimes of Cribbs are exposed and he is led off to prison. The Drunkard returns to his family, the mind of Agnes is restored, and all live happily ever after. Ellen Gardener.
