At the end ofthe extra time Shaw was ahead 55- 53, and had won its first victory of the season. Shaw continued its winning ways by dumping Parma 62-54 and University School 65-63 in an overtime. The eagers' victory string of three came to an abrupt end when Euclid squeezed by Shaw 45-44. But the Cardinals once again bounced back and beat Ashland, which was ranked thirteenth inthe state. 72-68. Next the Cardinals lost to a highly-rated Columbus North team by a score of 65-54. The Shaw team then journeyed to Shaker Heights where it suffered its fourth defeat by a 56-5l count. The following week Shaw was defeated by an inspired Lakewood team 65-56. The second round of the LEL found Shaw much-improved. After a 70-67 defeat of Heights the Cardinals were on their way. The following Saturday they were host the Toledo DeVilbiss team and after defeating them 74-57, entertained the boys here. Shaw then made it two in a row over Parma as they defeated the Redmen by a 74-68 score. The team avenged an earlier loss to Euclid by thoroughly whipping them 69-54. The Shaw Gymnasium was invaded the following night by the Maple Heights cagers. and they were given a warm reception. Shaw, led by Denny Klug's record-breaking 42 points. completely devastated the Mustangs and broke the field house record with 102 points. The red-hot Cardinals then closed out the regular season with consecutive wins of 78-63 over Shaker and 75-55 over Lake- wood. For the Shawmen this was seven in a row and a terrific comeback. The Cardinals volted all the way to sixth place in the city ratings before drawing Cathedral Latin in the Western Reserve tournament. With seniors Bill Wilhoyte and Bill Bythway playing their last games, Shaw was turned back by Latin 86-73. In his first year as Varsity Coach, Don Drebus did an outstanding job in leading Shaw to an impressive ll-5 record and second place in the LEL He relied mostly on Captain Bill Wilhoyte, Denny Klug, Ken Connell, Bill Morris and Don Petersen to do the work, with Bill Bythway. Al Thomson and Denny Rogers ready to step in at any time. Considering that there were only two seniors on the squad, Shaw students can look forward to a lot of good basketball next year. .H wwse- y 3 L Q 9 V-'V I, V... ,. ? , , . Spring training for Shaw's baseball team starts while the thoughts of most Shaw students are still going strong on basket- ball. Coach William Galberach pays no heed to unfavorable weather conditions by holding practices in the gym until spring melts all the snow from the dia- mond. Last season this early start showed its merits with 8 wins against only 4 defeats. The Cardinals skill shone as we gave Euclid its only LEL setback, and we dumped Lakewood for the -first time in 10 years. All was not rosy, however, as Shaker stopped us in our 2nd game with 6 big runs on only 2 hits. ' -zmfiwrx 'Q Heavy trailic at first. Strachan's safe at second. x 48 CC J D T hey re 0 Our team climaxed a great season by de- cisively taking the LEL meet with 53 lf2 points: Euclid followed up with 44 2X3 points. Being a little weak in some ofthe lield events, Shaw didn't take the lead until the last two events. The close tinish created suspense and raised the spirit to a high pitch. Our unbeatable mile relay pulled the meet out ot' the tire, so there wasn't any doubt about who was the best ol' the tield that day. Five school records were broken in the '57 season. A crack mile relay team of Tom King, Jim Baus, Jim Angle and Tom Matte set a new record at three minutes 26.5 seconds in the l80 yard low hurdles. Bob Vargo cleared the high jump bar at a record 6 feet, l lf2 inches. Tom Matte raised his previous pole vault record from ll feet to ll feet, 3 inches. At the district meet Jim Angle captured first place in the 440. Shaw also took three second places: pole vault, highjumps, and mile relayg two third places: Tom Matte inthe 440 and Jim Angle in the 100 yard dash. Joe Russo was a winner and a real threat in the half-mile but a foot injury and Running. . . . . before the District meet kept him out of the running. ln the state meet at Columbus, Bob Vargo took a third place in the high jump, in the 440, and in the mile relay. The team took a fourth. It was an exciting season and Coaches Moore and Strang produced a team the school can glow with pride about for years. X In-u Popular ueen Rezlgnr Over F1 ftzetk Annizfefcrmjf Game A glittering Crown and the honor of being the lirst football queen in three years went to the popular and deserving Sue Rey- nolds. Crowned at the Fifth Anniversary game with Shaker, October eleventh, Sue was first presented at an early morning rally by Larry Hall. Lynne Alexander, head ofthe spirit committee, crowned her as the climax to a spectacular half-time show. Equally charming were the live attend- ants, Mary Cumming, Gloria Grande, Sue Henderson, Marilyn Lombardo, and Judy Simons. Nominated by the Senior class, the queen was elected by student vote. All ofthe girls arrived at the game in style, seated attractively in new con- vertibles and escorted by six handsome and most willing escorts. AN We're from Shaw High and no one could be prouder and if you cannot hear us, we'll yell a little louder!', was the deafen- ing roar that resounded from the eight buses at E. 9th and Carnegie to the terminal, as the student body of Shaw High students migrated to Sandusky by train for the Shaw vs. San- dusky football game. Over 800 were in attendance despite the Asian Flu threat. During the two hour ride by slow freightf, the students occupied their time in various ways from eating, cheering, and singing, to a rousing game of five-card stud. Upon their arrival, they were greeted at the station by the Student Council of Sandusky High, and marched to the sta- dium behind the band to, among others, the tune of Shaw High Will Shine Tonight--. The night was clear and cold, and spirit was high. At the onset, the Shaw team ran away with the game. The student body, led by the cheerleaders, put heart and soul', into out-cheeringw the Sandusky section across the field. It was a hoarse, joyous crowd that tramped back to the train at the finish of that game. The ride back was filled with song and good cheer. After an hour out, a good half of the group was lost to oblivion. Everyone was pleasantly tired, and it was a subdued, sleepy crowd that piled on the buses at the terminal at 1:00 a.m., but all remarked, This is a night long to be remem- bered! 66 usky v Z X wx ,xx vm Nm X MRQ mfr Q3 3 Q: Q SW ,349 - Y 5' M S! Campaign advertising was handled in various ways. Radio broadcasts were made and posters were distributed throughout East Cleveland. Large stickers, pasted on students' and parents' cars were seen in all parts of the city. Teams of Shaw students. captained by members ofthe football team, were assigned districts in which to distribute lloaters door-to-door. The night of the campaign, spirit was high. Members of the Band assembled in the back ofa truck and played Shaw's favorite songs while rid- ing up and down Euclid Avenue. The teams of students, showing real school spirit, put forth a tremendous clfort in selling general admission football tickets to the community. Everyone had a wonderful time making the campaign the terrihc success that it was. 'H-.,,,. Mary Ellen Last year, for the first time, Shaw High School had as a student, blond, blue-eyed Alf Kolben- stvedt, an exchange student from Norway. This was the result of an organization which sponsors students from various parts of the world to visit other schools in other lands. The exchange student is chosen in many ways, one of which being an essay contest. These stu- dents represent their schools and their countries in other lands. There is a definite plan underlying this student exchange program, as Alf pointed out last year in his speech to the student body. Its purpose is to bring about a better understanding of the people ofthe world, and to better international relations. These exchange students receive a first hand, true picture of the countries and people they visit and, as 'young adults will be better equipped to handle the coming world problems as a step toward world peace. TO THE GRADUATES l should like to use the space allotted me in the Shuttle for a word of appreciation and congratulations to the graduating classes of 1958. The school and community have benefited from your support. ln such activities as the One in Ten Thousand Campaign, the 50th Anniversary of Football at Shaw Field, co-operation with the Parent Teacher Association in its program for the year, the Charity Drive and other school and community enterprises you have made many friends for Shaw. I like to think that by your conduct in and out of school you have helped create favorable public opinion about young people in East Cleveland and elsewhere. l believe this favorable opinion was refiected in the generous support the voters of East Cleveland gave the school bond issue for the pool, lounge and music facilities. One of the highest types of service is that which is given with no thought of self. You should feel good about your efforts this year to provide for others these facil- ities from which you will receive no personal benefit. Congratulations and best wishes. Wayne C. Blough Wayne C.
