SHUTTLE 1957 SHAW HIGH SCHOOL EAST CLEVELAND, OHIO ADMINISTRATION SENIORS page 10 page 50 J!et 3i ere i3e cyCi Lt This 1957 edition of the Show Shuttle illuminates the life of the school as its flash bulbs have lighted the faces and scenes depicted here. 4 Shaw’s class rooms are brightened by cheerful tones of paint and by the latest modes of electrical light. Football games are played under brilliant lighting. Auditorium activities are witnessed under the most favorable lighting conditions. 6 Basketball fans may see every inch of the court clearly. 7 Shaw High is in a community highly conscious of the significance of good lighting, for Nela Park is located on a beautiful hill overlooking East Cleveland. At Nela some of General Electric’s most progressive research scientists are helping to make this city and the world a brighter place in which to live. 8 By turning the pages of the 1957 Shuttle, readers will switch on the lights to understand better the sights of a school where progress is the most important product. 9 11 Class Officers January 1957 Dick Nero, vice-president; Sue Nick, secretary-treasurer; Tom Reeves, president. In charge of the senior activities of the January 1957 class are its officers: Tom Reeves, president; Dick Nero, vice-president; and Sue Nick, secretary. Working with Senior Advisor, Miss Isabelle Latta, and the class committee, they made arrangements for the prom; such as, choosing a place and selecting a band. Pres.; Jackie Cipiti, Sec.-Treas.; and Dave Fraser, Pres. One of the highest honors for a high school senior is to be elected a class officer. They are responsible for the decision concerning location, band, cost of the prom, and where the commencement exercise will be held. Dave Fraser, June class president, has many interests which include music, student council, Hi-Y, and excelling all these is his enthusiasm for sports. Dave’s well rounded personality enables him to get along with everyone. Joe Russo, vice-president, is a colorful guy who also serves as president of Letterman's club, guard of the basketball team, and halfback on the football team. Last is Jackie Cipiti, who serves as secretary-treasurer. Jackie has a flare for sports with swimming as her favorite. She has served as head varsity cheerleader, and treasurer of G.A.A.-A.C. These three officers have one special quality in common beside sports—their excellent scholarship record which will count heaviest in the future. 24 ALEXANDER. U V neuj5 Shaw had a new coach, a new offense, and a new brand of football this year. It all added up to the best season the Cardinals have had since 1941, for they finished with a seven and two record and an unexpected first place tie with Euclid for the LEL crown. When Leo Strang arrived last spring, he was almost unheard of at Shaw, but we soon become aware of his good record. Pre-season practice was mostly devoted to installing Strang s multiple offense, which the boys took to very well. Shaw opened the season with impressive victories over West and Collinwood, 55-7 and 54-6 respectively. Next they succeeded in overpowering powerful Sandusky, 16-7. After defeating Shaker, the Cardinals traveled to Lakewood and trounced the Rangers, 33-12. Following victories over Heights and Parma, they lost their first game of the season to Euclid. This game, played before some 7,164 people, was one of the most exciting football games played this season. The Panthers, playing inspired football, won 13-7 and tied with our hard hitting Cardinals for the LEL crown. Traveling to Toledo for their last game, the Cardinals dropped a 21-14 game to strong Toledo DeVilbis. This brought to an end a very successful season. “Congratulations coach and team for your LEL championship.” 52 375f42 5G 40 4G Front Row: Bob Vecchio, Al Andrews, Mike Brophy, Jack Currie, Tom Reeves, Head Coach Leo Strong. The cindermen won four of six meets, losing their first two to Maple Heights and Shaker. In group meets the tracksters showed promise. They often finished among the top five schools. The outstanding unit on the team was the 440 yard relay team consisting of Jim Angle, Frank Mencini, Joe Russo, and Tom King. This unit set a new meet record of 45.9 seconds, winning the American Legion Trophy at the Euclid Relays. Shaw also sent three boys to the state meet in Columbus. Tom Matte finished ninth in the 440 yard run and sixteenth in the pole vault; Joe Russo sixth in the 880 yard run and Bob Vargo sixth in the high jump. Four school records were matched or bettered during the 1956 season. Tom King tied the 100 yard dash record with a clocking of 10.1 seconds and Jim Angle equaled the 180 yard low hurdles record with a time of 20.8 seconds. Tom Matte set two records. Playing its first LEL game at Heights, Shaw lost a thriller to the Tigers in the final 26 seconds, 63-61. The next week the Cardinals played host to the Redmen of Parma and won a lopsided 70-47 victory. Following a mid-week victory over Mentor, the Cards traveled to Euclid where, after a slow start, came on in the third and fourth periods to rout the Panthers 67-35. The Cards, after disposing of Brush, entertained Shaker. Here they hit for their highest total of the season, romping over Shaker 90-70, to break the old Shaw record of 82 points in a single game. Traveling to Lakewood to play the towering Rangers, the Cardinals came out on the short end of a 78-46 score. They then bounced back to beat Heights 75-56. Shaw scored 31 of its points in the fourth quarter of a game that started out to be a nail-biter. A loss to Parma and a victory over Euclid followed. Using a full court press for the first time, Shaw won their 1 1th victory by defeating University School 84-52. After defeating Shaker for the second time, Shaw dropped a 64-43 decision to Lakewood. Using a deliberate attack, the Cards couldn’t cope with the Rangers’ deadly shooting and rebounding strength. A highlight of the season was the team’s trip to Oberlin College where the Cards played the Oberlin Freshmen. Following the game the Cards had dinner in their new dormitory and were their guests at the evening’s basketball game with Kenyon. The nucleus of the team consisted of five Seniors; Tom Matte, Mike Brophy, Harry Putzbach, Tony Yacabucci, Joe Russo. The victory went to Jim P ers, the final score being Shaw 6, Heights 5. Arriving first is Bob Biscotti. Lakewood ended a three-game winning streak by outscoring Bill Galberach's boys 10-4. A 2-0 victory over Shaker’s Raiders put the Red Birds higher in the win column. Al Thompson banged out four hits in five trips to the plate, which saw Parma ahead 2-1 when the last man was out. Euclid, with one of the area's outstanding ball clubs, hammered the Cards 7-1. Don Kelly, who helped win the first Heights game in the hitting department, lent another hand as Bob Settevendemie pitched a four-hit 2-0 shut-out. Lakewood opened the door to a four-game losing streak 3-1. Other scores in that streak were: Shaker 5, Shaw 1; Parma 5, Shaw 3; and Euclid 5, Shaw 1. Joe Szasz and Harry Putzbach aided the team to squeeze by University School 5-4 to end the season. Joe powered a triple over the center fielder's head, while Harry, not only got two hits for the day, but also played a remarkable game in centerfield. Although Tony Massaro led the county in batting for a good part of the season, Harold Klug finished as the team’s top man with a .359 average. 63 Badminton was an individual competitive sport. The girls, divided into groups, played each other to determine a group winner. Final play-offs determined an all-over badminton champ. Volleyball, a popular sport in the G.A.A. program, took place during the months of April and May. Last year a total of 160 girls, divided into a sophomore and a junior-senior league, participated in the sport. This spring completed the second season of tumbling. The girls learned various balances, in addition to using the parallel bars, springboard, buck, horse, and the trampoline. Various drops and flips were mastered by the girls, who practiced on the boys’ trampoline. Because this was such a popular part of the tumbling program, a new trampoline for the girls was bought by G.A.A. 64 Table tennis, another individual sport, was set up on the same order as badminton. Over 100 girls played table tennis in six weeks of competition, determining a final winner. Starting right after Christmas vacation was basketball, one of G.A.A.'s top sports. The season was highlighted by the Army-Navy game in March, where, this year, the varsity teams displayed their new uniforms. There were three main groups of swimmers. The Water Safety Aides provided girls to assist in the elementary swimming program, and trained the girls in life-saving skills. The Synchronized Swimming Group, working to develop the techniques of water ballet represented Shaw in the LEL swim meet, and gave a demonstration at Shaw’s Open House. The winning teams of each league bowled in a city tournament sponsored by the B.P.A. A total of 156 girls participated in softball during the fall months. The sport, played on a competitive basis, was comprised of a sophomore, a junior, and a senior league, with a winning team in each league. 71 Tennis, played during the fall months at Patterson field, improved the tennis skills and playing abilities of its 91 participants. When the weather interfered with playing, movies and slides about tennis were shown at school. Intramurals The Shaw High intramural program, whose purpose is to provide good clean recreation for the boys of Shaw, was again lead by Jack Moore. He was assisted by seniors Tom Reeves, Jim Hudelson and other boys who volunteered to referee or keep score. Activities included in the program this year were basketball, volleyball, ping pong and swimming. The program was held twice a week at 7:00 P.M. in the fieldhouse, with Sophomores participating on Tuesdays and Juniors and Seniors on Thursdays. There were over 300 boys in the program this year. Shaw’s Student Council, entertaining the third annual LEL Student Council Conference, gained a great deal of knowledge in student council proceedings and many ideas for their own improvement. The council was responsible for the monitor system, arbitration board, all-school parties, lost and found department, gameroom, pep rallies, assemblies, etc. This year, under the Foster Parents' plan, they adopted Georgia Fakouni of Greece. Work on revision of the constitution was also started. In order to get more accomplished the time of meetings was changed from 8:10 to 7:45. In the first semester Student Council supervised the annual Welfare Drive, putting on an assembly to arouse student interest. The drive was successful in topping the $1281.75 goal. 103 Bob Vargo Treasurer 1 Vice President 2 Al Alexander Treasurer 2 Front Row: Sandy Andrews, Lynn Funk, Nancy Goldstein, Sue Nick, Nancy Hodge, Elaine Hooper, Agnes Tartara, Carol Atchison. N.H.S., being an honorary organization with no planned activities, has three meetings each semester. These meetings are devoted mainly to planning the semi-annual induction ceremonies; arranging for a guest speaker and selecting the four student speakers. This year N.H.S. also made a contribution to the school’s annual Welfare Drive. The first semester officers were Elaine Hooper, president; Nancy Hodge, vice-president; Agnes Tartara, secretary; and Carol Atchison, treasurer. Business Club The Business Club, under the guidance of Paul Hammer, promotes interest in the business field, gives help to students interested in taking business courses, and is of service to the school in carrying out assigned business duties. The club members, meeting once a month, enjoy an interesting program, this year including a trip to the Ohio Bell Telephone Company and informative talks given by guest speakers; such as, Miss Ebeling from Sherwin-Williams. College Club Officers of Business Club: Ann Brescia, V. Pres.; Judy Knife, Pres.; Shirley Beard, Sec. Proving itself invaluable to numerous prospective college students is the Shaw College Club, under the supervision of Miss Lucille Provo. By arranging for speakers to come to Shaw, the members are well informed on all phases of college life, from scholarships and admissions to social affairs and the pros and cons of fraternity and sorority life. Question and answer periods following the speakers give students an opportunity to have their personal questions answered. Information on scholarship tests and college entrance examinations, in addition to material on the various colleges, is made available to each member. At the beginning of the year Cassil Reynard's talk on how to study for college boards” was also helpful to the future collegians. Officers of College Club: Ruth Philipp, V. The council, consisting of 28 members, met on Monday evenings to pool their ideas on how to make dances better than ever. Standing committees were set up for decorating, buying the latest records, cleaning up, etc. This year. Canteen's music was produced on a new hi-fi record player, a gift of the Shaw P.T.A. Among the special dances were the Ivy League” dance, the LEL Championship dance after the Euclid football game, and the Turkey Twirl,” at which the Cavaliers, an eight piece orchestra, played fine quality music. 106 Nancy Goldstein Editor-in-chief Ray Zombie Ass’t editor-in-chief Russ Miller Sports editor I Sally Polen Circulation editor The Shuttle Staff, guided by Hubert McNeil, worked to produce a yearbook, which would appeal to the student body. In the seventh period publications class they were kept busy drawing layouts, writing and typing copy, selecting candids, and doing several other odd jobs in time to meet their consignments. Despite steamroom conditions and disappearing pictures and stories, the staff succeeded in putting out a well-organized book. The subscription campaign, with the use of cards and stamps, was very successful, enabling more Shuttles to be sold with a minimum amount of bookwork. Cheerleaders Majorettes This year the J.V. Cheerleaders, under the direction of Mrs. Eleanor Pavey, really sparked the cheering section for the Junior Varsity basketball games. From their first “Hi” on down through all the cheers, they kept pep and spirit high throughout the entire season. The six girls practiced every Tuesday night in the boys' old gym to insure a better and peppier squad. They were not able to cheer at the away games, but they made up for it at all the home games. Shaw is justly proud of the third place won by our majorettes, under the able direction of Robert Fraser, at the Ohio State Fair with their ‘‘Stepping High” routine. The talented drum major. During the yuletide season the choir, carrying their bright new robe cases, traveled to Halle’s, Sterling-Linder-Davis, and the Public Square, where they entertained Christmas shoppers with their singing. The annual Christmas concert contained many familiar carols, hymns, and popular Christmas songs, ending traditionally with Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus,” where alumni choir members were invited onto the stage to sing. An added attraction this year was a trip to Akron, where choir and orchestra presented a Christmas program to the Goodyear Company. Choir also performed in the class commencement exercise and at the Spring Concert, an entertaining musical program containing a medley composed by several choir members. In March Shaw, playing host to the LEL Choir Festival, entertained 600 LEL choir members. The program consisted of each choir giving an individual performance, the choirs combining to sing several numbers in conclusion to the festival. 121 Say it with music, beautiful music—This theme song of the Shaw High Rhythm Teens, headed vocally by Miss Margery Shields and instrumentally by Robert Fraser, was heard many times during the year at various performances. Highlighting last year’s program was a trip to Columbus, where the 1 6 vocalists and and 1 6 instrumentalists entertained at the Ohio Principals' Convention. Programs were also given for the Cleveland Police banquet at the Hotel Cleveland, for several church groups, and for various fraternal organizations. This year's Midwinter Band Concert included Rhythm Teens regular forty minute program. This was their first performance open to the community. Rehearsing at 7:45 every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, this group worked to combine musical ability and showmanship into an entertaining program.
