Thus ran the immortal Words of Grantland Rice. So also believed the man to Whom we dedicate this yearbook, Douglas C Doc D Vivian, a man who believed in clean sports and fair play. His booming laughter, heard by hundreds of Shaw students through the years, is now forever stilled by death. But so long as Shaw High School stands, so long as Shaw athletes play clean, hard sports, will his name be remembered. For this man was not only a great athlete in his own right, not only a great coach, but a true friend to all who knew him. ADMIINIS T RA T I ON Dr. O. J. Korb Superintendent of schools Nelson F. Leist Assistant to the Superintendent of schools Mr. Kibbel at one of his many jobsg coaching, the basketball team. It is your privilege to stand at the dawn of a new era- man has cracked the atom, and is now on the verge of being able to release the enormous power that has hither- to been latent. This new era will produce achievements the like of which have never been dreamed, it also will create social, economic and political changes. These new conditions demand that we analyze un- familiar situations and develop new opportunities. It also means that if we are to survive as a great peace- loving nation, these new achievements and accomplish- ments must be used for the Good Life. Your own success will be measured by the amount of responsibility you are willing to assume in the days which lie ahead. A I wish you an unfettered start and a clear field in your race of life. 0, J. KW5 TO THE GRADUATES z You, the members of the classes oi J une andjanuary 1955, have enjoyed opportunities in your school- experience never before available to students at Shaw. A strong academic program, traditional at Shaw, has been ex- panded to provide greater opportunities for college preparation. It will well serve the forty-five percent of you who will go to college. About one-fourth of you will enter some phase of business or clerical work. You, too, have been well trained. Most of the remainder of your classes will enter industry or the armed services of our country. The faculty and staff have tried to prepare you also, through your courses of study and the counsel- ling services available to all Shaw students. All of you, regardless of subject matter preparation, have had an improved program of health and physical education, and a variety of intramural athletic activities. The new Shaw gymnasium has helped to make possible a broader and stronger program than any previous gener- ation of Shaw students has known. Driver training and education is meeting the needs of more of our students 4 A Wayne C- Blffugh Miss K. Lucille Provo Dean of girls Principal than ever before. The Reading Room program has pro- vided an opportunity for students with special interests and abilities to expand their educational and intellectual iorizons to a point rarely available to public high school students anywhere. At the same time the activity interests of students have not been overlooked. The club program offers a wide selection of interest groups. Your Student Council 1nd the Shaw Canteen have helped to make possible a social program which has done much to unify the student Jody to a greater extent than ever before. We all know these things did not happen of them- selves. Someone willed them to happen, then enlisted ihe aid of others to bring about these desirable ends. As Jou leave Shaw, may all of you be motivated to assume four share of the responsibility for maintaining and mproving the opportunities provided in your com- nunity for the education of succeeding generations of students. The thirteen cafeteria workers pre- pare our noon meals under the direc- tion of Mrs. Ruth Kerr, cafeteria manager. Each has his or her own specialty: making a particular dish, carrying out garbage, Washing dishes, or calculating how much your lunch costs and ringing it up on the cash register. Picking up that crumpled English test you dropped on the floor is just one Of the jobs of the custodian staff under the direction of Mr. Domenic Petri. Until a recent Student Council meeting there was no supervisory body to patrol the halls, but novv the job has been assumed by the members of the spirit and project committees. One of their first actions was the removal of outdated posters from the halls. . ffilff arifff 55' fif if March 2 IQ IL 1954 Scheduled for March 1, 2, 3, 4, 1954, the Sectional Basketball Tournament was Hnally held on March 9, 10, 11, in Shaw Gymnasium. According to the new Head Coach, Robert McGraw, the team members could hardly be expected to play their best game after a 160-mile bus trip. Traveling to Hosford Field, Shaw lost a thriller to Heights, 21-20, failing to take advantage of two scoring opportuni- ties in the first period. Shaw's share of Lake Erie League title depended on whether Shaw beat Lakewood or not. Shaw was thoroughly trounced by a powerful Lakewood team, 35-20, and finished the sea- son in a three-way tie with Parma and Heights with three wins and two losses. Seven returning lettermen formed the basis of the team. Depth was lacking, but fortunately few injuries occurred, except for Jay Hunton's loss of five teeth in the Shaker game. The coaches found that morale was uniformly high, and both players and coaches enjoyed the season. The school as a whole enjoyed the season, too. Well done. Among the finer team performances of the Wise- cup regime Was Winning the state baseball cham- pionship at Columbus with a 5-3 victory over Cincinnati Roger Bacon in 1944. On four other occasions the team represented this area in the state finals. Two Lake Erie League, three Central Division, and three Cleveland Metropolitan Division titles are represented in the main floor trophy cases as momentos of Wisecup trained squads. A lifetime interest in sports will continue to manifest itself through basketball and football ofliciation, Mr. Wisecup's principal leisure time activity since 1932. BASEBALL The Shaw High baseball team, even though they won only three games, felt a sense of spirit and determination as they strove to make a high stand- ing in the Lake Erie League. The nine men on the field were fighting to win and those on the bench were encouraging them just as hard. Jim Gunder's pitching was outstanding this season and the infielders played the game as though their lives depended on it. Al Kregenow played first, with George Garland at second, Bill Whit- acre as shortstop and John Barker at third. Jack Hanson and Jack Hennen were behind the plate. Bill Gibbs played right field, Bob Fish played center and John Magazine played left. Bill Whitacre was captain and had a batting average of .365. Close behind was Bob CSkeeterD Fish with a second place average of .361. The squad played its games and practiced at Forest Hills park for the first time this year, leav- ing the old diamond at the Shaw play ground. There is some optimism about the 1955 season, and the new coach, Mr. Galberach, is hoping for a large turnout of candidates. The Cardinal basketball team gave East Cleveland fans an exciting season, holding first place through the first month and a half of the schedule. An interesting style of play, good outside shooting, and defensive ability added up to games with much spectator appeal. Jim Leach was high point man with 143 points, finishing in the first uve in the league. George Garland and Jay Hunton were regarded by many as the best all-round guards in the league, Jay doing good rebound and defen- sive work and George acting as playmaker and captain of the team. Of the starting team, only Mike Brophy and Bill Welch will be back next season. Coach Grant Kibbel started his head coaching career at Shaw with an impressive 11-4 record. In league play, the Cardinals finished in .1 second place tie with Parma, winning 7 and losing 3. The team had no outstanding star, but was composed of boys who were taught the value of playing to- gether as a team. One of the defensive high lights of the year was the hrst Parma game when Hunton and Leach held Ernie Lees to one field goal which came in the last forty-five seconds. ln the second Heights game, Jim Leach scored thirty six points with sixteen held goals and four foul shots. In our grandfather's time the teacher ruled With a stick, and students were not given the opportunity to develop leadership qualities and to share ideas concerning school problems. It was not until the turn of the century that a need for a Student Council was recognized. The forty-seven members of our Student Council are the repre- sentatives of our student govern- ment. Each council member serves on one of the nine standing committees for the entire semester. This year the members of these committees were responsible for sponsoring the foot- ball queen campaign, conducting the welfare drive, planning many of our assemblies, and aiding a French War orphan. The first semester ofhcers were Hank Fischer, president, Jay Hun- ton, vice-president, Anne Hunter, secretary, and George Blanchard, treasurer. 93 CHO R Carol Bandy Bob Barker Bernie Baron jim Baus jane Berger Chris Beres Wilma Bockstahler Bob Bortner Nancy Bryan Carole Cabot Laura Carr Nancy Collova Nancy Crall Phyllis Daley Toni Daugherty Marianne DeMent Bob DeWard Bill Dignin Don Draheim jack Dreifort Diane Dysert Barbara Earley Pat Fall Leslie Farnsworth Karen Fellows Elaine Forkapa Barb Fracasso Dick Freedman George Garland Diane Gerscheski Ralph Green Dan Gyure Larry Hartland Marilyn Hicks Al Hoffman Nancy Hodge Joy Hossel jay Hunton Mary Margaret Hull jim Kitson Since 1904, when the hrst choral group was organized, Shaw students have found in the choir not only opportunities for individual expres- sion, but also enjoyment in providing music for both the school and the community. Ma Shields and Fraser, as they are affec- tionately called by their Rhythm Teens' family, are the planners, directors, booking agents, and emergency drivers for the group. The most outstanding venture the Rhythm Teens undertook was the two-day road trip in the spring of 1954 to Wellington, Toledo Libbey, Toledo De Vilbiss, and Sandusky High Schools, and the Sandusky Rotary Club. Friendship furnished the models and Simplicity Patterns supplied the clothes Cfrom Bermuda shorts worn by jackie Cipiti to a breath-taking red dress modelled by Carol Beckj for the fall fashion show in the auditorium, There was a Mother-Daughter Potluck supper held in November and a speaker at Christmastime who showed the girls how to make Christmas packages attractive and how to tie unusual-looking bows. Two parties were enjoyed by both Friendship groups together. The collection of pocket sized books for servicemen over-seas was a project repeated for the third straight year Probably the most heart-warming service project was the party which twenty girls gave to the old people of a city boarding home during Christmas vacation. Each of the elderly persons, many of whom were bed- ridden, was given a gift, amply supplied with ice cream and cookies, and treated to the singing of Christmas carols. The money needed to cover the expenses of the Party was earned by the sale of Christ- mas corsages which the girls assembled from ltits. These attractive corsages were sold in the cafeteria. The project proved to be very successful and will, no doubt, be repeated. The membership of the club during the first semester was l3O! The second semester group was smaller because of two mid-term classes. ENIOR FRIE D HIP Organized in 1919 to promote friendliness among Shaw girls, the Senior Friendship Club has spent a busy year doing just that. Both Friendship clubs participated in a get-acquainted party in the new gym at the beginning of the first semester. A week later a style show was put on by Simplicity Patterns with Friendship girls serv- ing as models. Under the direction of a new advisor, Miss Harriet Carpenter, a successful carnival was held in the cafeteria. The live-cent tickets purchased at the door were used for Dart Throw, Squirt the Candle, Tennis Toss, and many other games. Refreshments were sold and dancing was held in the Cardinals' Nest. Two interesting speakers discussing hope chests and personality were a part of the year's program. A Christmas party in the new gym was attended by members of both Friendship clubs. Making Santa Claus favors for the children's polio ward at City Hospital was the responsibility of the Service Club. Considera- tion of cost, location, size, rating, and courses offered is important, agreed Col- lege Club members who this year enjoyed a varied program of speakers, nlms, and gen- eral information designed to help solve their college problems. One of the few College Clubs in the greater Cleveland high schools, the organ- ization is comparatively new at Shaw. The need for such a club was recognized as more and more graduates were college- bound, explains Miss Lucille Provo, faculty adviser. Trips to Western Reserve, Fenn, Kent, Oberlin, Wooster, Baldwin-Wallace, and Hiram offered chances to visit the colleges in this area. One highlight of this year's program was a meeting at which members were told about College Board Exams and then took a short sample College Board test. Other programs included a debate by college students on college at home vs. college out-of-town, guest speakers from the Armed Forces, and a panel of Shaw faculty members, who discussed co-educa- tional schools vs. privatc men's and women's colleges. One of the first rights transported to this country by the early English colonists, freedom of speech and of the press, is an important part of our American way of life. It is through school publications, such as the Shaw Observer, that students have enjoyed the opportunity for free expression through journalism. Born on April 24, 1930, the Observer made its initial appearance as a bi-Weekly, six-column paper. Its first advisers were Miss Mildred Palmer, English teacher, and Homer Gifford. In 1935, the responsi- bility was turned over to Miss Clara Clendenen, who remained as faculty sponsor until 1939, when Hubert McNeill assumed the role of chief. The staff, made up of the journalism class and editors Carr and Tomcho, this year observed the twenty-fifth year of Observer publication. As in- evitable as last-minute deadlines and paper-crammed wastebaskets, the hard-working staff, along with Mr. Mac, could be found every Thursday night be- fore publication, completing copy with the added in- spiration of imported hamburgers and milkshakes. Thus, the budding journalists, by becoming better acquainted with their school and their fellow stu- dents, learn not only to develop a nose for news, but to appreciate their American heritage-freedom of the press. Pat Candon and Lucille Saunway eliminate tb: due tok and add ramfnar. is SHUTTLE This year's Sbzmle is, for the most part, the joint effort of the eleven members of the sixth period Publications class which met during the first semester in room 210. The class was advised by Mr. Bruce Holderbaum, art teacher and sponsor. Work on the Shuttle was begun in the first week of school with the members of the class discussing prices of covers, photography, and advertising. As time elapsed, layouts were drawn, copy written, rewritten, and typed, and pictures were taken, cut to size, and pasted carefully on build-up sheets. When John Tomcho's illness required him to be absent from school, Ralph Green took candids and group photographs as scheduled, enabling the dead- line to be met. The week-long absence of Janet Stillinger, Editor-in-Chief, and Laura Carr, copy writer, was sorely felt as other staffers labored heroically to make up for the missing members. Six months and countless hours of hard work are spent to create the Sburrle. Late in February, the last captions and headings are frantically written and the last picture is cemented down. All the staff members breathe a sigh of relief as the final work, on their part, is wrapped and sent to the printers, not to be seen again until the book comes out in May. HI- Y These Shaw girls are not farmers' daughters, but guests of the Hi-Y boys at the Barn Party. ll6 Hi-Y is a high school Y.M.C.A. organization which meets every Monday night at the Y House with Mr. William Cumler as director. The young men gather for fun and Work together on many different projects. There are three small clubs in the Hi-Y, Amigos, Argus, and Delphi. Delphi is working on a project to get good movies for the meetings. Clean speech, clean sports, clean scholarship, and clean living is the pledge of the Hi-Y boys. Each year Hi-Y has many social func- tions. In the fall, there was a Barn Party at the Centerville Mills Y.M.C.A. camp, with social and square dancing. The Can-Can chorus line made up of our knobby-kneed, hairy-legged heroes proved to be a hysterical feature of the annual Hi-Y Show. Hi-Y and the Friendship clubs of Shaw jointly sponsored and organized the Hi-Y-Friendship Dance. D LPHI STANDING: Rgmnly Abbey, Dick West, jim Kutcher, John Bodmcr, Mr. Mcinhart. This year's Can- teen dances were made more enjoyable than those of the past by the use of beautiful colored lights reflecting from the traditional glittering crystal ball hanging in the center of the gym. Card tables and chairs arranged on one section of the dance floor created a welcome spot to rest those weary feet or a place to sit and talk over the game while sipping a coke. The gayest dance of the football season was held Novem- ber 12, 1954, in honor of Shaw's 1954 Football Queen, Jill Dreifort, and her two attendants, Lee Wellman and Marge D'Ambrosia. This year the Canteen Council has become a recognized school organization. Each member is assigned to a special committee on the council. These committees are in charge of posters and publicity, police, assigning council members their time to work at the dances, and the running of the checkroom. Only if each member does his individual job well, is the council able to carry out its plans successfully. The council does not have a specific meeting time. How- ever, meetings are usually held the Monday night before each home game at various members' homes. The consti- tution of the council limits its membership to twenty. The hard-working officers are: Johnny Stewart, president, Janet Stillinger, vice-president, Linda Yannetta, secretary, and Larry Hartland, treasurer. Their chief use for delight is in privateness and retiring, for ornament is in discourseg and for ability is in the judgment and disposition of busi- ness.
