Page 6 El-HND the cultural atmosphere and wonderful tradutuon whuch surrounds Shaw Hugh School us the long and unterestung story of uts growth and development ln the year of hus death l83S ohn Shaw made a wull settung asude nunety acres of land upow whuch was to be erected an academy Thus was to transpure two years after the death of hus wufe As Mrs Shaw passed away the followung year the furst buuldung of the Shaw Academy was constructed un l838 Thus two story two room frame buuldung was completely ruuned wuthun twelve years because of the de structuve pranks of older boys In the same year l8SO another buuldung was erected on the s me sute thus tume made of bruck ln l87O the school was taken over by the East Cleveland Townshup Board who by H384 wuth func acquured from the sale of farm buuldungs completed the constructuon of a two storv bruck Luuldung When much duscussuon arose concernung the 'egal status of the school ut was clecuded that un ac cordance wuth the wull of ohn Shaw a publuc hugh school to be lnown as Shaw Hugh School would b mauntauned Therefore upon the passung of an S85 OOO bond ussue the furst Shaw l-lugh School costung S97 O03 was buult Thus structure was completed un l906 and compruses the pre nt olfl buuld n ln l9l7 wuth the buuldung of the audutoruum was begun a serues of umprovements and addutuons such as the open ng of a new Technucal buuldunp un l92l Fcllowung thus the gymnasuum the swummung pool the band room and the new staduum whuch seats lO OOOand cost S75 OOD were constructed At thus tume also the muddy and skurt were adopted as a regulatuon dress for gurls Recently a system of unclurect Iughtung was unstalled whuch made thus school one of the best lughted un the country Truly not even john Shaw humself could ever have dreamed that durung the one hundred nd eleven vears sun e uts foundung Shaw l-lugh School would become such a worthy Iuvung monument to hum through uts h gh standard of culture nd educatucn . .l . . g , 1 . , . . s , l I u u ' l . .
