SRLVIER ANNIVERSARY RAND HROUGHOUT the twenty five years since its founding the Shaw band has done its part to glorify Shaw s name by repeatedly achieving new honors in the field of music The band was started by its present director Milton C Nier garth shortly after his appointment by the Board of Education as teacher of instrumental music in the East Cleveland Schools ln September of i924 the first band consisting of I6 mem bers met in what is now the girls gym but was then the auto driving class room The band appeared publicly for the first time at the final football game of the year at which Shaw played University At this time they had a repertoire consisting of two numbers After that the musicians improved rapidly and gave their first band concert in December l924 A uniform consisting of a black cape lined with red taffeta and a black cap was adopted in the spring of l925 In the fall of l927 the band purchased sailor type uniforms and competed in the Ohio State Band Contest held in Cleveland placing third At a contest in Columbus in 1929 they were more successful however, and placed second With this was begun an exceptionally fine record for since i929 the band has received no rating lower than second in any competition Since I933 no rating below first has been received with the exception of one year l94O The present military type uniforms were incorporated in i929 when S Robert Frazer director of music at Kirk was a member The band became a traditional part of every football game in l937 as a result of the efforts of Trevor Ries former football coach Smce then marching has become one of the most impor tant factors in band performances niversary organization have been directed by Tommy Dorsey and Rudy Valley and have participated in concerts and parades for war loan drives and Red Cross campaigns They have appeared at pro fessional football games and churches and have been featured at such factories as Thompson Products Parker Appliance, Reliance Electric Apex and Graphite Bronze At the Shaw Lorain game last fall band members presented their director Milton G Niergarth with a television set in appre ciation of the part he has played in giving Shaw band the place of distinction which it holds among musicians all over the United States Page 8 U Q ' U ' ' ' . Throughout the years since l924, members of this silver an-
