Shaw Returns Sheldon E. Shaw has returned to his alma mater after serving his coun- try in a time ot stress. He wants to see what goes on here in l946. Sheldon is like hundreds of other alumni who would enjoy an inside pictorial account of activities within the school. ln fact, he is really a symbol of all such former students: his name represents streets passing the east, north, and west approaches to the three buildings known as Shaw High. J. Korb as their superintendent, He has held this position for the past seven years, four of which were critical war years. During these trying times, with financial difficulties added to the other wartime problems, Dr. Korb's administrative abbilities proved highly valuable to this community. Dr, Korb has devoted his life to the field of education and is a trustee of Kent University. l-le has a Master's Degree from Columbia University, a Doctor's Degree from Western Reserve, and was the superintendent of schools in South Euclid before he came to Shaw. Dr. Korb enjoys the many sports activities at Shaw and finds time to attend many of them. Business Manager Mr. William Councell, Business Manager Mrs. Lois Skinner, Clerk-treasurer Miss Jean MacGregor, Miss Mildred Lenk, Office Workers Tucked away in a corner of the technical building, is located the busi- ness department of the East Cleveland school district, with William Councell at the helm. lt is the function of this department to: supply all textbooks used by students, provide for the salaries of all employees of the Board of Education, heat and light, janitorial service, and maintenance of school property. Mrs. Lois Skinner, Clerk-Treasurer, is in charge of all the finan- cial matters, handled by this department. She also keeps the records of all board meetings. Another of her duties is being responsible for all financial reports. ln this office are kept all records and blueprints of all the buildings owned and operated by the Board. All equipment used by the various shops is bought by the business department. Though this office provides the equipment used by the physical education classes, it is not connected with any of the inter-scholastic athletic organizations. All correspondence and telephone services are handled through this office. Left to Right -- William Councell, Mrs. Clvde Morgan, Mrs, Lois Skinner, Ben B. Lois Skinner Business Manager ,..,.,. William Councell As Sheldon Shaw comes in the West Tech door, he sees the room in which all the business transactions of Shaw are approved, for it is in this section of rooms that the Board of Education meets. It consists of five members, who in turn hire the clerk- treasurer and business manager. Some of the duties of this board of directors are to have a supervisor and approve ot the teachers whom he in turn hires. They also collect the school taxes and pass all the expenditures. A project this year was the buying of the house and ground across from Shaw, where the new gym is to be built. Other features are athletic ability and those having previous experience. Dressed in white, they are easily distinguished from the rest of the class and are seen checking each girl's uniform while taking' attendance. ln addition to these duties, the leaders help in grading their classmates and assist in teaching them games. The club has no set time for meetings, but Miss Chamberlain calls them together as often as she feels it is necessary. The leading event sponsored by the Leaders' Club is the Posture con- test. The title of posture queen was g-iven this year to Helen Cain, with: Marian Lucas, and Gerry Lyons as her attendants. twelve thirteen Back Row -- Barbara Goodwin, Stormy Robinson, Betty Herrmann, Barb Roads, Patty Young, Marty' Stafford, May Volpe Third Row - Sue Ebenhack, Betty Morgans, Peggy Holmes, Betty Reich, Alice Sharlotte, Nancy Leare Second Row - Mary Jane Wisecup, Lou Murray, Dorothy Murray, Lois Owens, Betty Di Bartolo First Row - Connie Evans, Carroll Allen, Jean Cormack, Lois Gerstenberger S Letter Girl O be an S-girl, you must be a member of G.A.A. Any sport offered at Show is one in which you may earn points. A test is given for each sport, and this test must be taken in order to get credit. With 350 points you earn a small S letter, a large S letter is given when you have received 700 points, and a pennant is presented to any girl who has a total of l0OO points. The Athletic Council has presented the point system for each sport with one main idea in mind. That purpose is to get girls interested in sports and to create keener competition among them. Creative Dances U H MY aching back. No doubt you've heard this expression many times on Wednesday mornings. These gruesome groans are brought about by Modern Dancers, who look like pretzels on Tuesday nights in the gym!! All sorts of exercises and dances are performed to the beat of a drum, the purpose is to gain poise and grace. Each girl is given a chance to show creative ability by making up indi- vidual steps, then the best steps are molded into a complete dance. Modern Dancers were featured in the Christmas program, when lO girls performed the Carol Dance. Modern Dancing is sponsored by the Athletic Council, and the dancers are under the leadership of Lois Gerstenberger. A. A. members came out for after school basketball, they worked hard for those precious points toward an S letter, and the honor of playing in the Army Navy game. Selecting of the players was up to the basketball department headed by Barb Roads, and her assistant Kay Ryan. For the price of one thin dime Sheldon Shaw came to the girls' gym to witness the event. This year, Miss Lois Wood, of Kirk junior higih's physi- cal educational department was on hand to blow the whistle. After a terrific battle, Navy emerged victorious -- 26 to l2. Dead eye Shirley Reichenbach walked off with the honors bagging 20 of Navy's 26 points. ARMY - Back Row - Patty Young, Mary Louise Satter, Viola Pattinson. I wish I had been there. lt must have been as fierce a battle as if it were between those two universities. Sheldon E. Shaw remarked this as he listened to Betty Herrmann, in charge of Volleyball, and her assistant, Carroll Allen, describe this sports classic. Twice weekly the gym rang with high-pitched shouts as team matched skill with team. Girl vied with glirl for the honor of being in the Yale- Harvard. Finally the field was narrowed down, and a picked crew was chosen for the engagement. After straining for the championship, Harvard was vic- toriou lYale lost nobly in the close race? in two out of three games. Acting wisely, thinking quickly, being alert, playing well, and playing in all games of her team but one - that is the description of any Yale- Harvard girl. Spectators expected a fine game with such fine teams, and they were not disappointed. sixteen Boots and Saddle URING his wanderings through the girls' gym, Sheldon suddenly thought of the Riding Club. Upon inquiring about the officers, he discovered that there was no president this year. A new system has been worked out whereby one officer is elected as head of the club to act as the representative to A. C. The new head is Carol Geitz. Sheldon soon discovered Carol, who told him of their many excursions to the Shaker Riding Academy. She also told him of the many times their rides were cancelled on account of rain--anly to find them more eager on the next Friday afternoon. At the present time the Council is discussing the club room they are planning. Ideas about future doughnut sales, as well as the spring annual picnic also will be heard. Promoting girls' sports is no easy job. Therefore, the organization is divided into groups according to the sport. In charg-e of volleyball are Carol Allen and Luiclle Galemmo. Baseball is headed by Betty Herrmann and Shirley Reichenbach, while Betty Farrar handles winter sports. Pilot- ing the swimmers are Pat Young and Lee Williams. Carol Geitz directs the horseback riding, as Barbara Roads and Kay Ryan tutor the basket- ballers. Modern Dancing is directed by Lois Gerstenberger and Margie Hoffman. Trim Mermaids HE girls in the trim black suits with red emblems who are skilled in graceful swiming and beautiful formations are the Tarponettes. These girls are picked by members after passing tests that prove their ability to swim and dive with endurance and gracefulness. Members meet every other Thursday after school in the pool. This year the aim of a Tarponette is to perfect her swimming for the annual Tarpon Pageant. This will be a swimming show of formations in costume with music. Tarpon has its semi-annual splash party and pot-luck dinner after each election of officers. A splash party is planned with the Sharcs, girls' swiming club at Shaker. This old proverb could be the motto of the Life-Saving group. Many hours are spent in practicing after school. Accuracy and smoothness are the main elements of practicing arti- ficial respiration. A life-saver must be expertly trained in the head carry and the cross chest carry, to pass Junior and Senior Life-Saving. One is eligible for the Life-Saving group if able to: swim two lengths, crawl with head out of water, tread water for one minute, swim two lengths side stroke with one arm, back stroke without arms, swim one-half length under water, have at least one good front dive, back float for l5 seconds, and be able to retrieve an object from the bottom of the pool. First semester Junior Life-Saving was practiced, and the second sem- ester Senior Life-Saving. It is also necessary to have passed Junior Life-Saving before taking Senior Life-Saving. lf a Life-Saver had a perfect attendance and passed the final exam, she was awarded an emblem or pin on Honor Day. Seventy-five points may be gained towards an S letter if Junior Life- Saving is passed, lOO points if Senior Life-Saving is passed, and 25 points if a girl renewed the senior course. The Life-Saving Group is headed by Mary Wisecup, assisted by Rose- mary Campbell. Aquatic Duck N Sl-lELDON'S wanderings through the girls' gym, he came upon Carroll Allen, who immediately began to tell him of the many things Aqua-Dux has been doing in the past year. First, she told him of the doughnut sale that Lee Williams and Jo- anne Fissel helped put over. Then of course she couldn't neglect telling of the open swimming- meet that Aqua-Dux sponsored in December, in which Sue Ebenhack won first prize, Marty Stafford won second, and Stormy Robinson and Jackie Cary tied for third place honors. Among other sports, athletics mean football. He was told that it can happen here, ln tact, it did. The pigskin-can riers lost some games. With about the toughest schedule any team ever had to tultill, the regular eleven began a string ot reverses atter swamping East and Collinwood. Every player tried hard, but somebody has to lose, this year it was the Black and Red's turn. Capacity crowds filled the stadium for all seven home games, anyway, to watch the speed at John Davis and the punting of John North. Jack Palmer's passing will not soon be forgotten either. twenty-tive ,rf N ,, V 4,A, 19 X ' af- Ewa f ' He: ,,, M .ff y gl 5 se, g A ,uf W Y' X 1. V it Sy . , g. ,Q i f 5 A ' ,-L. .' is ' ' s. .. Displaying a powerful running attack from the single-wing formation, the sophs got off to a good start by taking Benedictine l2 - O, tying Col- linwood O-O, and defeating Shaker l9-O. Their lone setback came Lakewood 21-O. The Knutemen wound up the rest of the year by adging the Brush Reserves 25-O and deadlocking- East Tech O-O and Heights 7 - 7. Playing an exceptional game in the line, Steve Vantrease, end, Vince Taddeo and Don Baumgardner, tackles, and Leonard Elliot, guard, did much to bring the team through. At the head of the running department were Rush McKnight and Vince Barrett, halfbacks. Even though little passing was attempted, plenty of yardage was tacked on these backs. A 6-2-2-l defense was played throughout the year with Center Jay Hollingsworth and Quarterback Fred Suppes backing up the line. twenty eight Flashy Twirls TTENTIONY A shrill whistle is heard and the band goes marching down 'A the field. This is Lois Wood's last year. Annella Bassett inot picturedl moved to California and she is a major- ette there. Next year they are planning new formations and they hope to get new uniforms. There will be two new majorettes. thirty-one Queen For A Day HELDON Shaw will be a long time remembering the Heights rally of l945. The auditorium lights dimmed with the incessant murmur, Who do you suppose will be Queen? and What do you suppose she'll wear? When the master of ceremonies came out to introduce the various speakers, poor Shel was just sitting on the edge of his seat to hear the names of the lucky girls. Finally after all the breath taking suspense came to a climax, the M. C, announced Marilyn Varcoe and Louise Murray as attendants and Betty Kessler as Queen. On Dec. I4, '45, the Greater Cleveland meet was held at Fenn College, at which all schools that have swimming pools were represented. Shaw took fifth place in this event. Because of mid-year graduation, the team lost five stellar men, three of whom were inducted into the navy. On Feb. 6, also at Fenn College, was held the big event of the year - the Lake Erie League meet, at which the Docmen swam to a triumphant second place with twenty-two points. This is the only way it could be, when the largest boys' organization in Shaw exerts its influence for 25 years, with this purpose ..... To create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community high standards of Christian character. Sports claim much of the interest of Hi-Y boys. The several clubs in Hi-Y compete for the championship in football, baseball, and basketball. Social activities and entertainments are spread throughout the year. There's the fall fair, the annual Hi-Y show, and the city-wide Hi-Y dance. Also a feature of Hi-Y is the well rounded program of speakers. No wonder Sheldon E. Shaw is proud of his school and of Hi-Y. Good Hi-Y members make good soldiers, because the standard for both is the same. The essential factor of any Christmas assembly is music. E. E. Vance and the choir and Miss Carol Chamberlain and the modern dancers took care of this very nicely, Miss Dean always likes to put to use as many talents as the school has to offer. During the course of the conver- sation with Miss Anna Soutar, Council adviser, the War Chest Drive came up. Miss Soutar began relating how the school quota of S1600 was topped. At the end of the sixth and last day Sl747.5l was the final total. Of this amount the classrooms contributed Sl34l.2l. The school General Fund gave S3005 while the daily movies and an after-school dance added the final SlO6.3O. A committee headed by Dave Armington and Bob Hahn took care of the whole affair, giving broadcasts and counting returns. Eight of the 32 homerooms passed their goal and 20 more went over last year's mark. Feeling satisfied that his alma mater had been solidly behind this worthy cause, Sheldon continued down the hall. one hu ndred-th i rteen Nancy Leare, Betty Herrmann, Fay Schmunk, Mitzi Wilson. War Chest Drive While Sheldon E. Shaw was walking down the second floor hall of the Technical building, he noticed the Student Council office. Accordingly he went in to speak with Miss Anna Soutar, Council Advisor. Conversation drifted to the War Chest Drive and Miss Soutar related how generously Shaw responded to that urgent appeal. I The school goal of Sl6OO was topped by Sl47.5l. Of this Sl747.5l grand total, S300 was contributed by the general fund, 5106.30 by the movies and an after school dance, and ?pl34l.2l by the pupils. The room with the highest average per pupil was l9 with 52.66. For the past year the Observer has been running articles of lasting interest for the school to enjoy. lt contains everything from assemblies to the sport page. Each section has a special editor. Right now the news editor is Charles Rendlesham, the editor-in-chief is Betty Reich, feature editor is Kathryn White, photographer is Clarence Gould, advertising manager is lrving Gray, circulation manager is Harry Kellem, and the adviser is Hubert McNeill. On Thursday night copy is sent to the printer. Galleys are sent back Tuesday, when students proofread the paper to see if the words are spelled correctly. one hundred-seventeen Observer Staff Seen working in room nine Tuesday and Thursday nights, these people are the backbone of the Observer. From these Sheldon learns about copy reading and proofreading. All of these students have taken journalism and have earned a place on the staff. The work of the forum this year was devoted to the topics, compul- sory military training ,the domestic labor troubles, and the United Nations. Feeling that students should know how the UN. works, and how it can provide peace, much time was spent in its study. Again this year interscholastic debates were held with neighboring schools. The debate topic was compulsory training. Schools participating in the decision and non-decision debates were: Euclid Central, Euclid Shore, St. Ignatius, and Cleveland Heights. An interscholastic speech contest was also sponsored by this active organization. With the war's end, the debate team again attended several out of town debates. After their business meeting, members enjoy themselves by working on whatever art projects they wish, such as ceramics, jewelry, oil painting, and silk screening. This year they did not enter the May show, since silk screening took up much of their time. But a successful doughnut sale was held to get money for needed supplies. Membership in this organization is open only to those receiving g-rades of A or high B in art. Events that happened during the first semester beside world discus- sions were a party for newly-elected officers, who's who quiz program, and a profitable doughnut sale. Another interesting incident, remarked Louise Harrison, president, was the Christmas party. Each member brought a present and some un- expected but clever gifts. There are about 50 members in the club. During the past year the Whirloites had a skating party, a pot-luck dinner, and a dance. Another interesting feature about this skating club is that it has a bowling team and competed with other schools. OFFICERS President i.,. . Alice Wiseman Vice-President . , .
