Nixon EMBERSHIP in the National Honor Society is the highest honor which can be bestowed upon a student of Shaw. Members of the Honor Society are chosen not only because of excel- lence in scholarship, but also because of superior character, leadership, and service. The teachers, whose recommendations are necessary for election to the society, are asked to judge the student on these points. Thus it is evident that, since scholarship, character, leadership, and service account for the rating for membership in the Honor Society, only the best in Shaw are represented in this society. M iss Alba Junk LTHOUGH the Shuttle is published only once a year, in the spring, - the Shuttle Editorial Stai is busy almost all year with the Work of producing it. In the late fall there were snapshots and club pictures to be taken, in December the senior pictures, the months of February and March were spent on the club stories, then the printer's galley had to be corrected, and the Hpage-proof carefully checked. A thorough system of checking is necessary as the value of the annual is determined for a large part by its accuracy. This constant checking becomes tedious but can not be omitted. This year the staff has striven to see that the picture of every student in school appears somewhere in the book. Pictures of homerooms were introduced this year as a unique feature. Although the work requires time and energy, the members of the staff feel that the experience and training they receive, as Well as their good time, more than compensate for the time spent. The circultion department, by securing 850 subscribers, has this year surpassed the record of previous ones. Posters throughout the building aided in this sales drive. The originality of the staff in conducting its campaigns has contributed in ai great measure to its success. The advertising staff has sold, to the merchants of the community, space in the year-book, thus extending the influence of Shaw throughout the community and creating a feeling of good-will toward the school. This organization is a member of the Columbia Scholastic Press As- sociation and the National Scholastic Press Association. It also has a chapter of the Quill and Scroll, an international honorary society for high school journalists. Attending the Thirteenth Annual Ohio State Journalism Convention at Columbus on November 6 and 7, 1935, were Clifford Finch, Bob Mc- Namara, Lois Hamilton, Kathleen Maloney, and Norma Hackstedde, ac- companied by Miss Clendenen. The credit for the production of the Observer should be given to the members of the editorial staff whose initiative and hard work make the school newspaper possible. Since then, under the guidance of Miss Linnie Arnold, it has become an integral part of Shaw life. It is informally known as the Latin Club. The club's motto is Eacere Quam Dicere, - To do rather than to say. Meetings, which take place every other Tuesday during the school year, generally consist of programs dealing either with Latin itself or having Latin backgrounds. Every year a Latin play is given, and a picnic is enjoyed. Membership consists of those persons Who enjoy Latin for Latin's sake with many intending to make good use of the knowledge thereby ob- tained. A very satisfactory point system is used by this organization in help- ing to determine the standing of members. Since a minimum of 75 points is necessary for one to be in the Shuttle picture, it induces everyone to participate in the club activities, making the meetings lively and enter- taining. This was accomplished in the face of greater difficulties than any Shaw orchestra had ever faced. Asserts its director, Mr. Milton G. Nier- garth, Because of the difficulty of scheduling people for orchestra classes during the past few years its prominence in Shaw musical life has been lessening perceptibly, and rehearsing has been forced to take place after school. However, there is a very small orchestra class meeting every second period during the school week in the Band Room. More than two-thirds of the orchestra, which ordinarily consists of 35 musicians, are members of the bands, there being only eleven fmainly violinistsb who belong solely to the orchestra. For this reason the orches- tra has not been organized as a club. Its nominal duty is to provide music for plays, concerts, and commencement exercises. Eleven Shawites qualified for the national solo contests held at Colum- bus by ranking highest in their divisions in the Greater Cleveland solo competition. They were awarded places on a basis of one winner for every ten entries. They were: Vincent Pattie and Hildred Lintner, B-flat clar- inetg Paul Kluga, Bass clarinet, Irene Wood, E-flat clarinet, Richard Ruggles, oboeg Stanley Harris, violin, Sterling Beck and Harold Lynn, alto saxophone, Philip Herter, trumpetg Julian Leet, French horny and Jack Smith, tuba. Moreover, Dick Jones and Jack Tongring qualified as alternates in the drum-major and tenor-sax divisions. Shaw, with eleven winners and two alternates, had more national entries than any other Greater Cleveland school with the possible exception of John Adams. The meetings often end in gay hilarity resulting from some ridiculous, perhaps impossible, problem. In its more serious moments the club has discussed cryptography, forms of higher mathematics, and short cuts. One serious discussion ended immediately when John Lenox, working a problem the long way, finished before Henry Green, who was demon- strating a short method. To pay for its picture in the Shuttle the club sponsored a taffy sale. The picnic in the spring, when even Mr. Brown forgets his dignity, is the big event of the entire year. This club was organized to create an interest in marksmanship as a hobby which can be continually prac- ticed through the greater part of one's life. The meetings are held at Kirk Junior High School from seven until ten o'clock every Thursday evening. Each member brings to the meet- ings his own twenty-two caliber rifle and bullets. A small fee, collected at each meeting,is used to buy the official rifle targets which are used by all the members. Each meeting is a contest in itselfg the scores of the various members are averaged and those having the highest averages make up a team. Clarence Riewaldt and Francis Fisher have shot perfect scores several times. Those who are not on the team have been improving continually in their marksmanship. A meet with West High School was won by Shaw by the score of 846 to 783. Simply and concisely, these words, the motto of the Shaw Hi-Y, express the very essence of that organization which was founded in 1921 by Mr. E. V. Rasmussen to create, maintain and extend throughout the school and community high standards of Christian character. Today the Hi-Y consists of seven chapters and boasts of a member- ship of over 140 Shaw students. The past January 11 marks the date of greatest attendance in the history of the club. Average attendance is approximately fifteen to eighteen members per club. Each spring the Hi-Y sponsors a show with each of the chapters par- ticipating in separate, self-originated skits. In past years these shows have been outstanding successes and have, more than anything else, brought East Cleveland to take proper notice of its premier youths' organ- ization. Every semester the club publishes a program of coming events, and during the spring holds swimming and baseball tournaments. Harold Goss, former president of the combined chapters has been suc- cessively elevated to the leadership of the city and state Hi-Y councils, an honor reflecting greatly upon himself and the Hi-Y.
