Mr. Braxton Nail Superintendent On January 21, 1982 Dr. William Henry Shaw died. The following was an Editorial which best expressed the feeling of the community toward this man who gave so much for Education - The Columbus Enquirer Editorials Columbus, Ga., Friday, January 22, 1982 Education Giant For a quarter century Dr. William Henry Shaw was the dominant force in public education in Columbus. He joined the local school system in 1945 at the close of World War II. He served as superintendent for 28 years before retiring in 1973. During this time Dr. Shaw - sometimes controversial, always respected - came to symbolize local citizens' dedication to quality education. Dr. Shaw saw many educational advances. Soon after he became city superintendent, the city and county school systems were merged with him in the top administrative post. The merged system became a model for other communities. Dr. Shaw - working in concert with the Board of Education - devoted his time and energy to upgrading the level of teaching and school facilities. By the '50s the effort was paying off. The Muscogee County school system was recognized as one of Georgia's best. At that time Columbus did not have a college of its own. Dr. Shaw and his board spearheaded a drive that led to the establishment of Columbus College in 1958 as a part of the University System of Georgia. It was one of his proudest moments. His most trying time, without doubt, came during integration of Columbus schools. Thanks to his skill and fairness - and the goodwill of local citizens, both black and white - the schools were integrated without serious difficulty. After retiring, Dr. Shaw devoted his time to his family and to teaching part time at his beloved Columbus College. In recent years Dr. Shaw's health had been failing. He died Thursday at age 79. His memory will be preserved by two institutions that bear his name - Shaw High School and St. Luke United Methodist Church's Shaw Bible Class. But his greatest monument will always be a school system that strives to provide the best education possible for Columbus children. THE BOARD OF EDUCATION is the home base for the MUSCOGEE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT. Members of the board are Mr. Robert Anderson, Dr. Hen- ry L. Cook Sr., Mrs. Sybil Dodson, Mr. Dan Doleman Jr., Mr. Joe M. Flournoy, Mr. B. Harp Jr., Mr. Lorenzo Manns, Mr. Seth Fred W. Mitchell Jr., Mr. Robert Turner, M and r.
