Its pulse rate is strong: Homecoming court and dances, the Christ- mas parade, a lonely long dis- tance runner running the miles of blacktop, the wail of a hot sax, the throb of a bass drum heard on a long Sep- tember afternoon in the parking lot, the rat-a-tat-tat of typewriters harmoniously clicking their melody, the red cross blood drive. Proud of our school and ourselves We are superior to all others, and special in ev- ery respect. The students of Shaw High School, a cheerful group, helping one another in every possible way. Partici- pating, friendly, victorious. We are the student life. We are the Raiders. I Shaw S Club Homecoming float. The winning float sponsored by the sen- ior class. They are always de- serving and surpassing all other educators. Always giv- ing of what little time they have left over to help us. They are ruling, yet witty. They are skillful, yet down to earth. Where else can anyone find such authoritative and direct, yet likeable and kind people? No where but here, at our school, Shaw High. 'Q - f' X 4621255572 2 f n g ,. lf- f:,f.,,.. Becoming more and more certain of themselves with each new day, yet still un- sure of what the future holds, they are radiant and full of life. To be a senior is to be proud. Proud of having come so far. Proud of being successful. Proud to be a graduating Raid- er. We should support them and congratulate them. We should show them that we are as proud of them as they are of them- selves and each other. Although at times the seniors may seem aloof or withdrawn, they are truly warm and friend- ly. There are no other words that can describe them, other than the ones already used. They are important, unequaled, warm, and most of all, proud. Sports Illustrat- ed. K A fitting Word that could be used to describe the under- classmen might be determined, for they certainly are. Striving to do their best, they work very hard to reach their goal: to be- being an underclassmen. With- out it, getting through the first years of high school would be much harder. Everyone should have as much determination as they. come successful seniors. Being uncertain of the future seems to make them work harder, and use all of the resources Within their grasp to become more cer- tain. Whatever the situation, they are determined to over- come it or to improve it. Deter- mination is an important part of The Freshmen must exper- ience the first year of high school. The Sophomores play on junior varsity teams while the Juniors prepare for term pa- pers and fund raisers for prom. Each class has its own respon- sibilities to contribute to Shaw. M - 'Cs A ' . With an impressive display of true Raider Spirit our athletes have prov- en themselves to be superb in all areas. Well-known and recog- nized by all, we could pick them out of a crowd of happy Raider faces. It's the competitiveness that makes a Shaw athlete want to become the best and to try their hardest to succeed in everything. The thrill of victory and agony of defeat is an essential in forming a true athlete. The time and effort spent on practicing should truly be reward- ed. Long afternoon practices and weekly games 6 meets, a Shaw athlete has to be dedicated. The dedication of the coaches is a most important factor. As is their willingness to teach and guide our athletic teams. Using their spare time to improve on the skills of our young athletes, the coaches deserve a sincere thank you. One of the most impor- tant areas of school life is the participation of stu- dents in school clubs. Bene- ficial to us all, they help us to grow and expand our knowledge. Being active in school clubs helps us to help ourselves. We become our leadership abilities, and also having fun. In joining clubs, we make new friends and see some old ones while experienc- ing new activities. The following was an Editorial which best expressed the feeling of the community toward this man who gave so much for Education - The Columbus Enquirer Editorials Columbus, Ga., Friday, January 22, 1982 Education Giant For a quarter century Dr. William Henry Shaw was the dominant force in public education in Columbus. He joined the local school system in 1945 at the close of World War II. He served as superintendent for 28 years before retiring in 1973. During this time Dr. Shaw - sometimes controversial, always respected - came to symbolize local citizens' dedication to quality education. Dr. Shaw saw many educational advances. Soon after he became city superintendent, the city and county school systems were merged with him in the top administrative post. The merged system became a model for other communities. Dr. Shaw - working in concert with the Board of Education - devoted his time and energy to upgrading the level of teaching and school facilities. By the '50s the effort was paying off. The Muscogee County school system was recognized as one of Georgia's best. At that time Columbus did not have a college of its own. Dr. Shaw and his board spearheaded a drive that led to the establishment of Columbus College in 1958 as a part of the University System of Georgia. It was one of his proudest moments. His most trying time, without doubt, came during integration of Columbus schools. Thanks to his skill and fairness - and the goodwill of local citizens, both black and white - the schools were integrated without serious difficulty. After retiring, Dr. Shaw devoted his time to his family and to teaching part time at his beloved Columbus College. In recent years Dr. Shaw's health had been failing. He died Thursday at age 79. His memory will be preserved by two institutions that bear his name - Shaw High School and St. Luke United Methodist Church's Shaw Bible Class. But his greatest monument will always be a school system that strives to provide the best education possible for Columbus children. THE BOARD OF EDUCATION is the home base for the MUSCOGEE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT. Members of the board are Mr. Robert Anderson, Dr. Hen- ry L. Cook Sr., Mrs. Sybil Dodson, Mr. Dan Doleman Jr., Mr. Joe M. Flournoy, Mr. B. Harp Jr., Mr. Lorenzo Manns, Mr. Seth Fred W. Mitchell Jr., Mr. Robert Turner, M and r. Monthly meetings are held to discuss fund raising projects, places of interest to be visited, and suggestions made by students that may be of help to the club or just fun to participate in. It is set up to be enjoyable, and for the, purpose of learning new things about yourself and nature. Throughout the year lab as- sistants help to make some teachers' jobs a little easier. The students who are de- pended upon by these teach- ers are efficient and reli- able. They are expected to do what is asked of them, while learning at the same time, and doing a good job. Being a lab assistant is not all work, though. Q if Melody From Mom and Dad, Cathy Lorenzo, Warren, Sabrina, and Chris Dear Jenny You are about to enter a new and independent world. We want you to know that the road of life moves rapidly forward. Yet there are forks in this road. Each is filled with disappointment and happiness involvement and personal committment. You must determine what lies over the hill and decide if you are prepared to give all that which is necessary to succeed. You have not fully decided whether you are a participant or a supporter but your decision must be to give your everything regardless of which direction you take. You are no longer a child yet you are not quite an adult so think long on the course you choose. You must travel with a larger group and as such must go in harmony with others. Yet while so doing you must remain you - so like the others yet so totally individual. You have traveled part of the way with us and for this we high school and remember we will always be on your side of the road no matter which fork you choose. Congratulations on your graduation from , , VNV, -I Danelle Marie Voisine 1964- , 1981 Dedicated to the memory of Danelle Voisine. Danelle was a very outgoing, bright, strong, brave, intelligent and very loving individual. Many of us could be envious of Dan- elle's outlook. She loved life and made the most of every minute. Though she was faced with a fatal disease she kept on fighting. Danelle was a joy to know and she will al- ways live in the hearts of those who knew her. I rv ffqg., ' x y 1 ryy Erroll Matthew Yardley 1964-1981 Dedicated to the memory of Erroll Yardley. Erroll was easy to get along with and fun to be around. He made friends easily and was a great friend himself. Erroll knew what he wanted out of life and wasn't afraid to go after it. He was a gentleman and always thought of others. n Memoriam When I Must Leave You When I must leave you, for a little while, Please do not grieve, and shed wild tears And hug your sorrow to you through the years, But start out bravely with a gallant smile. And for my sake and in my name Live on and do all things the same. Feed not your loneliness on empty days But fill each Waking hour in useful ways Reach out your hand ,in comfort and in cheer And I in turn will comfort you and hold you near And never, never be afraid to die For I am waiting for you in the sky!
