THE REV. SIDNEY W. GOLDSMITH, JR. Rector and Headmaster A B Williams College 1940, Chi Psi, Delta Gamma Rho, D. D. Deacon 1947, Ordained Priest 1948, Assistant Rector St Johns Virginia Theological Seminary 1959, B.D. 1948, Associate in Chris- Episcopal Church, Williamstown, Mass. H948-503, Shattuck since tian Education Pasadena, California C1939-421, Line Officer, Lt. 1950, Canon, Cathedral of Our Merciful Saviour, Faribault Min .I G Navy Amphibious Forces in South Pacific C1942-461, Ordained nesota. To the Members of the Class of 1961 I would direct your attention to the words of the concluding prayer used each year at the Commencement Vesper Service in the Chapel which reads: O Lord, our Heavenly Father, we beseech thee with thy gracious favor to bless, preserve and guide all who have gone forth, and who now go forth, from this School. Watch over and guide them and us in our several callings and walks through life, and especially at this time, that we may do our work, whatever it may be, as the work Thou givest us to do - and may we do it in Truth and with Courage, and to the benefit of mankind. Make us humble, brave and loving, and make us ready for adventure. WE DO NOT ASK THAT THOU WILT KEEP US SAFE IN THE . DAYS WHICH LIE AHEAD, BUT THAT THOU WILT KEEP US LOYAL, LOYAL TO OUR FRIENDS, OUR SCHOOL, OUR COMMUNITIES, LOYAL TO THE GREAT PRIN- CIPLES OF OUR COUNTRY, that iustice and love and freedom and peace may be established throughout the world. This, we ask in the Name of Him who was loyal unto death, even thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The capitalized words relating to LOYALTY are of central importance for each of us in the times in which we are destined to live. For so many people in our day, Personal Safety or Security - a what's in it for me philosophy - seems to be of foremost con- cern, ond, in the process, this repetitively evokes nothing but frustration, bitterness and rebellion. Yet, all history reveals to us the basic truth that, He who would ind himself must lose himself in something greater than himself - and, for the followers of Jesus, the Christ - He becomes the guide and example - the greater than self in Whom all else is centered. Loyalty to high ideals for Him led to death on the cross. Yet today, He stands as the Victor, as Christ the King. May He rule in your hearts and minds, and spirits, and thus may Justice and love and freedom and peace be established through- We out the world.
