I have enjoyed working with you, and as you c lose the period in your lives during which you have been under constant supervision, and enter a period where you are on your own, I should like to stress the importance of adopting high principles as your guiding philosophy. Should you ask me to suggest some model to guide you in formulating such a philosophy I could offer nothing more appropriate than the following quotation from Balfour: ' 'The best thing to give your enemy is forgiveness: to an opponent, tolerance: to a friend, your heart: to your child, a good ex- ampleg to a father, deference: to your mother, conduct that will make her proud of you: to yourself, respect: to all men, charity. Good luck to each and all of you. W. E. GOURLEY l N I 9. if mugs 7-Lain, fzincipal During the present period of our history, anyone who com- pletes school to go out into the world will find his future to be about as certain as the western movie actor who leaves his running horse to jump on a fast moving train. And if the train were speeding toward a gang of outlaws, it would be comparable to the war situation ahead of us in Asia. It would be foolish for the older generation who were un- able to prevent this mess to offer any sound advice other than, Do the best to prepare yourselves for whatever you think may lie ahead.' In Witness whereof we, the Seniors of 1951, the testators, have set our hand and seal on this 16th day of May in the year of 1951. 'uae geniofz pfzoplaecxl of IQSO-SI This being the year of 1960, let us look back only ten short years ago. Do you remember the Senior Class of 1950-51? What a silly question--why no one could possibly have forgotten them. But let us see what progress they have made since their graduation from dear old S.H.S. Dick Caldwell--is now starring in The Thin Man. Dan E. Duggan--is running a Matrimonial Agency for retired Gorillas. Lorena Worrell--and her tall dark handsome husband own a small cafe in Arkansas. The only reason they can't seem to get ahead is-because Lorena eats up all the profit. .Tack Skippy Nash--is the Strict Truant Officer at dear old S.H.S. I. C. Steadman--is the proud manufacturer of the Steadmobile. Johnalee Hagen--or might we say fthe voice, the figure, and the face of our Senior Class, is now a great Opera Singer in New York. Raymond Funk--is the Star in that romantic film, The Great Lover. Bob Ranck--has made millions on his Sheep Ranch on the hill. Dolores Hoch--the great lover of football, finally married a football coach. She is teaching her ll little Gridders to follow in their father's footsteps. Charles Swope--is exploring the interior of Africa all by his lonesome. Can you imagine that, girls ? ? ? ? ? Don Sherrill--is trying to make Sweetie Face a living. Corine Meier--finally got her man lby hook or crookj and they are living happily with Al Jr. on their cattle ranch in South Texas. Ed Richardson--is the pride of the hot-rod track at Podunk. The last we heard of Ed Matthews, he had taken the slow boat to China, and he hasn't found his way back-yet! Bill Jackson--is coach of the Girl's Jack Team at the Podunk Academy for girls. Melvin Schoenhals--runs a Casino on the outskirts of Podunk-- The Bloody Bucket. Clifford Tubb--was voted Mr. Petunia of 1960. Dorothea Kelln--is the Famous Dress Designer. She is now in Hollywood designing clothes for famous movie stars. Adolph Ybarra--is the new Jazz Singer at the Bloody Bucket.' Donald Jenkins--is the Foreman on The El Rancho Grande. Grant Walton--is Bouncer at Melvin's Casino. You won't believe it, but Jimmie Earnst is a great Band Director at Hopps- ville High School. Don't tell anyone, but they say that he is almost as good as Mr. Farrell. Leona Faye Manske--has certainly twirled her way to fame. Back in 1950 she thought it quite an honor to be considered one of the best six hundred twirl- ers in the U.S. Now her name is at the top of the list. What? You sav you haven't seen her picture in the papers. Well, you'd better look againl Qln the Indianj. Geraline Roach's--rich uncle died and left her his millions. Keith has been trying to persuade her to marry him now, but she thinks they should wait a few more years and save their money. EvidentlyDan Ray Schoenhals liked dear old S.H.S. because he is back again. But don't misunderstand, this time he is a teacher instead of a student. fThe Agriculture Teacher instead of Mr. Bradley.Q Lenora Eagon--is now a stenographer for the J. C. Steadrnobile Company in New York. Well, I..enora,maybe it did help -a little to take that shorthand book home every evening even though you didn't study it. Hisfofzmf A FOUR YEAR VOYAGE On a morning in September in the year 1946, a group of boys and girls gathered in Shattuck High School to embark on a four year voyage to distant lands of strange and wondrous sights and experiences. This voyage was to be a personally conducted tour in charge of Superin- tendent W. E. Gourley, assisted by Principal Ralph Thain, Mr. W. C. Jones, Miss Eloise Taylor, Mrs. Lina Nicholson, also Mrs. Miriam Colbert, and Mr. Willard Bradley. The tour included, a nine months stay in Freshman Land. None in the tour had ever visited this land before but had reports of its green fields and delicious foods from other travelers who had once voy- aged there. During our stay, we became acquainted with the wonders of Al- gebra Labyrinth, and a few became so entangled in its intricacies that they never rejoined the party. Others spent much of their time in English groves where they made the acquaintance of masters of eloquence and were treated to feasts of roots, diagrams, verses, and book reports. Many entered Spanish Peninsula and enjoyed the peculiar delights to be found there. A few were lost in the fourth conjugation and ablative absolute and had to remain two years before they found their way out. Some were charmed with the delights of General Science Mountains. A few of the weaker ones never succeeded in surmounting all these barriers. All were required to explore Citizenship Caverns. This proved not too difficult for most. Many enjoyed every hour of their stay and roamed among these treasure places. They were allowed to have for the taking all the gems, jewels, or tolls they found and desired. The guide of the tour wisely supervised our recreation and protected us from occasional attacks of noisy creatures called sophomores who invaded the Freshman Land. At the end of the nine months sojourn, passports were issued to enable us to leave on the next cruise to Sophomore Island. After a summer of fun, a somewhat smaller group assembled to embark for the lark on Sophomore Island. The guide of this trip was Willard Bradley . Many of the assistants on this tour were the same as those who had looked after our needs in Freshman Land. Our band of students landed at the island filled with enthusiasm. Some hastened to scale Geometry Heights and found there pleasures of sight and intellect. A few did not like the rough going and deserted the group at the first opportunity. Many found keen pleasure in digging into the historic mounds. Here they discovered the records of the lives of many great men. All of the group were forced to take a sail on English Lake with Mrs. Nichol- son and to take frequent plunges into Oral Bay of poetry interpretation. A few of the more active occasionally tried to sneak across the narrcw channel to Freshman Land and annoy the natives there. but the guide quickly quelled these attempts. The assistant was always com- plaining of the atmosphere of Sophomore Island which seemed to affect the in- habitants with a form of hysteria which manifested itself in the victim by much shouting, laughing, and whispering. The victim was never conscious of these manifestations in hirnself until he had left the is land when the disease disappeared. The assistant also complained that the travelers were more interested in themselves than in the treasures to be found on the island. A few liked the island so well that they were granted a permit to remain for a second season. A few remained in the employ of a Mr. Caesar who hired them to build a bridge. Our next tour was to Junior Continent. We had no sooner landed there than the travelers began to complain of crowded conditions. The guide ex- plained that conditions were not really more crowded than they had beeng but that every one who reached Junior Land is afflicted with a form of con- sciousness of increased size and irnportanceg but this is apparent only to the traveler himself and passes away as soon as he leaves Junior Land. Var- ious localties were explored on this continent, English Heights, Mathematics Depths, and bottomless history pits. Sports were organized and played, and various clubs were added to the entertainment of all. With few exceptions passports were issued for the next tour to Senior Haven. The next September our group embarked upon the last year of its tour in the good ship, Shattuck High. As our ship put off from shore, three others also left. One was being filled with small timid boys and girls bound for Freshman Land: another with a noisy bunch off for Sophomore Isleg an- other was being filled with self important youths and maidens off for Junior Continent. The guide explained that the members of our group had at one time been like each of the other groups, but that seemed impossible! ll On landing at Senior Haven we were given quite a choice of places to ex- plore. New delights met us on every hand. Pleasures, such as we had never dreamed were ours. Our 1951 Indian: our senior play Crashing Society under direction of Miss Lillian Slemmer, Grant Walton and Faye Manske as Best All-Around Senior Boy 8: Girl , Swope, Steadman, Caldwell, Sherrill, Matth- ews, Schoenhals, and Jackson, our famous athletesg Faye Manske featured in Who's Who In Baton Twirling g the delightful Jr.--Sr. Banquetg the hilarious senior week, and the climax, our senior trip. All too soon the yearpassed, and the guide called us together for the last tirne to tell us that we must hasten on to make room for others and embark now on the sea of life--choosing our own ship which we must sail for ourselves. We were left tearfully on the shore watching the ship fade away in the dis- tance with only our memories and our diplomas to recall the glad days aboard our ship, Shattuck High. eniofzs CLASS OFFICERS AND SPONSOR Left to right: Back row-J. There they learned many things not in books: teachers called this learning social adjustment. These children learned that bad luck followed if one squirted ink in other people's hairg if a boy kissed a sweet, pretty girl, or if one chastized his op- ponent by dragging him at the end of a chain. Nevertheless it was not all sorrow. These pupils discovered a breath- lessly beautiful room as enchanting as a fairyland. Pretty flowers and green plants were everywhere. Toys! as many as in a drug store at Christmas tirnel There were interesting stories, and delicious birthday cakes. The second grades were ever so much fun under Mrs. Gyier and Miss Godley where the pupils were acquainted with all the kids from previous primary days. Under the sympathetic guidance from the teachers they learned to mix serious work with jolly play. in the third grade the pupils for the first time had adventures in the field of science with Mrs. Meier. All were properly impressed by this new pop- ular subject. Another beloved experience was their music class under Mr. Yoderg another beloved teacher was Mrs. Gourley. An exciting event was a baseball game between the two third-grade rooms. In the fourth grade, under Mrs. Starnes, they were introduced to a new ceremony called parliamentary procedure. They even elected class of- ficers: Jeanette Osborne, president, Lee Bolster, vice-president. Again they had fun with class parties and with treats and pleasant surprises from the teacher. In the fifth grade these pupils sandpapered industriously on their desks and made them beautiful. Also they worked with the 4th and 6th grades to present a lovely Christmas program called Christmas in Toyland. The new subject was history. In the sixth grade H950-51, they found a new classmate called Cicero. Though he was fat, he was also rough and tough. This year was marked by many outstanding social events: gum showers for all the teachers, a Hal- loween party and a Christmas party given by our sponsor, Mrs. Yoderg and a presentation of two pretty plants to Miss Slemmer. Mr. Jones gave prizes to almost all the room because they wrote themes on Audio-Visual Aids. Miss Slemmer offered prizes on the art work. Larry Abbott made a 97 aver- age in arithmetic.
