MR JOHN SPENCER MR. PRICE'S MESSAGE Many able high school students do not continue their formal education because they are anxious to begin gainful employment. ln some cases the need for a per- sonal income is very genuine and worthy. In other cases the need is based upon the desire for an automobile or for ready spending money. Many able young people are leaving school too soon because they are unwilling to accept deferred values. They want their rewards to be immediate. Education does not ordinarily give its rewards in the present, but later-often not until the distant future. One must be willing to work now, and wait for his reward. I would urge the class of '59 not to be satisfied to settle for the status quo or with what the present may have to offer. The lessons of history clearly indicate that there has always been an imperative need for well- educated men and women with talent and imagination. Conformity has its place, but it can be a dangerous seda- tive to an able young person living in a dynamic so- ciety. How the future is to reward us depends very much on what we do during the years when schooling is easily available. We need always to keep in mind I-Ienley's lines from Invictus : It matters not how straight the gate. How charged with punishment scroll: I am the master of my fate, l am the captain of my soul.
