PRICE'S MESSAGE Many able high school students do not continue their formal education because they are anxious to begin gainful employment. ln some cases the need for a per- sonal income is very genuine and worthy. In other cases the need is based upon the desire for an automobile or for ready spending money. Many able young people are leaving school too soon because they are unwilling to accept deferred values. They want their rewards to be immediate. Education does not ordinarily give its rewards in the present, but later-often not until the distant future. One must be willing to work now, and wait for his reward. I would urge the class of '59 not to be satisfied to settle for the status quo or with what the present may have to offer. The lessons of history clearly indicate that there has always been an imperative need for well- educated men and women with talent and imagination. Conformity has its place, but it can be a dangerous seda- tive to an able young person living in a dynamic so- ciety. How the future is to reward us depends very much on what we do during the years when schooling is easily available. We need always to keep in mind I-Ienley's lines from Invictus : It matters not how straight the gate. How charged with punishment scroll: I am the master of my fate, l am the captain of my soul. This is particularly important in such areas as food, housing, medicine, transportation, communications, and education. I think it is of particular interest to note that a large percentage of these advances have come since You, the members of the class of l959, were bornAl6, l7, or l8 years ago. With the many advantages of this technical age, more training is needed for almost any job or position than just a few years ago. The new horizon which you now face includes either continuing your formal education in preparation for your choice of life Work or entering the working world immediately upon graduation. Which- reaching the goals you have set, and rememb r ays to be the type of person of whi y . X ever way you choose, may you work hard to ds ATTENDANCE CJFFICE Supervising the attendance office is the ever-pat Mr. Donald Marvin and the ever-pleasant Mrs. B Prince. Also working in the attendance office are students. These students help the officers in taking of the 1154 students at Shasta. Aiding the teachers, counselors, and parents is Grace Warrnoth who gives intelligence tests to stud BOARD OF ' TRUSTEES The exceedingly difficult job of gov- erning Shasta High and the other schools of the district falls on the board of trustees, who give unselfishly of their time helping to make Shasta High a better school. They are elected by edu- cational and civic leaders who are in- terested in the students and faculty. fm' Left to right: Dr. Eugene Pedal, Robert Vaughan, C. W. In the past there has been little privacy in the counselors' offices for talking over such problems. The offices have been small, inconvenient, rooms scattered about the building. All that has been changed this year with the opening of the new counseling center. Now all the counselors' offices as well as the offices of the principal, vice-principal, director of student activities, and director of testing are in one suite with a counseling secretary to serve as re- ceptionist. The Governing Board of Trustees approved the building of the counseling center after receiving the report of the Lay Committee on Counseling which made a year-long study of our counseling program. Mike Hastings as our vice- president proved to do a well-planned iob of organizing our assembly programs. The ratification of the new constitution was put into effect in which the students are gov- erned by a bi-partisan government. Peggy Thompson, secretary, kept an accurate record of student body affairs. We owe much to Kay Arnoldy, Girls Tax Collector, and Brent Collins, Treasurer, as well as Rodger Clark, Commissioner of Building and Grounds, who were very successful in maintaining sufficient funds in our student body. The hilarious play, Father Knows Best , the crowning of the Homecoming Queen, Shasta's 13-0 victory over Enterprise High, and the many pep rallies and entertaining assemblies are a few of the many things that helped make Shasta's first semester very suc- cessful. Although they didn't go undefeated, the team came up with a good 6-3 season with two of the losses being real heartbreakers. With Chico going undefeated, and Reno losing only one, Shasta came in a close third. Leading the Wolves on offense this year was the fabulous junior fullback, Butch Crotto. Also outstanding on offense were Dean Gordon and Mario Serafin, who was shifted from guard to halfback. Leading the big line on offense and defense were Bob lanes, Marshall Brackin, Greg Gifford, and Rodger Clark. The co-captains this year were Rodger Clark and Greg Gifford. There was no out- standing lineman or back. Although twelve lettermen this year are graduating, ten or more junior letter men led by Butch Crotto and Dave Winters will be back next year to add experience to the Wolf Pack of '59. HIGHLIGHTS With a host of returning l.V. lettermen, the Wolfpups looked forward to an improvement over the previous year. The fighting pups accomplished this goal with a three win, three loss, and one tie record. The record would have probably been quite better with a little more luck in the final minutes of the games. Dave Winters, Mike lrvine, and Dennis Burnum led the team on offense and defense. Because of his inspiring playing and leadership, Winters was elected captain. With the powerful Dave Winters and about eleven other sophomores going to varsity next year, the Wolfpups will really have to struggle to attain a favorable record, but with some luck and hard practice, it can be done. m:Urf:lU:1:l:11l.-'DUl'I1l:11mO cnsdrrldilvr-1:-'QZOU1 fav-Q1 GP- Q? All CHAMPIONS FIRST ROW, left fo right P. Gaulf, N. Milfon, VOLLEYBALL Lasting from the end of September to the first of No- vember, volleyball was the first activity in which the Girls' Athletic Association members participated. This sport, being under the able management of Shirley Dowell, had a terrific season. The activity started with about two weeks of practice games. Then, the games continued with a double-elimi- nation tournament lasting three weeks. The winning team was under the leadership of Iudy Acurso. Later, a group of senior and junior girls were chal- lenged to a volleyball game by the Enterprise High School G.A.A. The Shasta senior girls were victorious in their game. The juniors were not quite as lucky, but they played a fine game. There were many exciting games during the season, and the G.A.A. group encourages all girls to attend other G.A.A. activities throughout the school year. W. Espil, A. Tennant. SECOND ROW: L. Tanner, L. Trader, L. McClain, J. Acuno. FALL SHIRLEY DOWELL Manager G.A.A. LYNN ERICKSON BOWLING This year bowling was carried on at the old bowling alley. On Mondays there were five teams which successfully threw the heavy bowl- ing balls down the alleys. On Wednesdays, four teams bowled and competed for the high scores. Bowling is the one indoor sport which every- one can enjoy. Young and old can easily learn to bowl and will come back again and again to enjoy it. Our top eight bowlers were the following in the order of their top scores: Eva Brooks, Iustine Benedict, Carol lean Dowell, Pat McBride, Laurie Kennicott, Bev I-lovell, Sonny Boswell, and LaBee Simon. Our bowling was highly successful this year with over 80 girls turning out. Manager dict. SECOND ROW: E. Brooks, L, Simon, B. Hovell. FIRST ROW, left to right: C. Dowell, J. HARLAN CARTER Coach As the 1959 season started, the general con- sensus was that the Shasta Wolves only had the material to turn in an average year. The expecta- tions of most people concerned became realities with the Wolves finishing the season with a record of 7-l2 and by ending up in next to last place in the Acker Tournament, which was held in Chico. Mario Serafin, this year's captain, was always a standout in defensive play and team spirit whether the team won or lost. The spurting offense was divided between Mike Anthony, Ross Carter, and Mike Farley. The other senior members of the squad, Iohn McGowan, Van Clineschmidt, Gary Boyse, Bob lones, and Eddie Pierce, all turned in fine performances during the season. With many fine players coming from the Iunior Varsity and with returning lettermen like Ross Carter and Mike Farley, Coach Harlan Carter hopes to build a team next year that will again make Shasta the leader of the North. These peo- ple were in for a real surprise as the Wolf pups, led by the dynamic quartet of Dennis Burnum, Steve Carlton, Craig DeForest, and Forest Thompson, came through with a great record of 15 wins and 4 losses. The games they lost, two to Christain Brothers, one to Enterprise, were all close games and could have gone either way. Giving fine support to the top tour were lim Fields, Gary Bresolin, and Larry Gardner. Coach Carter can look forward to a fine season next year as these boys, under the excellent coaching of Coach George Economou, have gained a lot of ability and inspiration. There were about forty members that participated in the games which were refereed by either college or high school girls. The winning basketball team from Shasta captained ay Donna Bidwell, went to the annual basketball play' day which was held this year at Enterprise High School. Students from Shasta, Enterprise, Central Valley, and Anderson High Schools played in this tournament. Another basketball playday was held this year at Chico State College. The players from Shasta were chosen on the basis of their ability to play basketball and their spcrtsmanship. Basketball, in the past, has always been a popular sport with the G.A.A. members, and it seems that the sport has maintained its popularity again this year. FIRST ROW, left to riqht: D. Hislop D. There was a singles and a doubles tournament. The G.A.A. members who entered either one or both of these tournaments played their games after school in the girls' gym. The ping-pong tournament offered those who were defeated in their first game a chance to continue playing by entering the consolation ping-pong games. The more ping-pong games a player won, the more points she received to- wards her G.A.A. letter or pin. The Daisy deadline prevented us from giving you the results of the ping-pong tournaments. Charles Schafer as our vice-president proved to do a well-planned job of or- ganizing our assembly programs. Sherry Quinn, secretary, kept the stu- dent body well informed by her accurate minutes. Gary Snow, treasurer, Ierry Sherman, boys' tax collector, and Pete Economou, Commissioner of Building and Grounds, were very successful in maintaining sufficient funds in our stu- dent body. Shasta's basketball team showed fine spirit at the annual Acker Tournament held in Oroville this year. The team tried to establish a trophy award for games between the three city schools. A new trophy case was purchased for the school. Both the Iunior Prom and the Senior Ball were a huge success. The musical Oklahoma, presented as the senior play, provided great entertain- ment. These events are only a few of the events that helped to make Shasta's sec- ond semester very successful. The House was under the leadership of Mr. Galen Owens, advisor: Dave Colby, Speaker of the House, and Richard Neitz, Speaker Pro Tem. The minutes were recorded very ably by Secretary Alvia Overman. It is hoped that in future years this group will become a standard part of our student body government and help to maintain the good name of Shasta High. FIRST ROW, Ieft to right: S. Heryford, I. Several members of the class played an important role on the varsity basketball and football teams, showing skill and providinq the backbone of the squads. Susan Tucker won the Lions Student Speaker contest. The Annual Senior Ball proved to be a suc- cess. The class was headed by Bob Iones and Mario Serafin. Mr. Louis Grush was the advisor. J UNIORS The year finally came when the class of '60 would receive their class rinqs. They were now juniors and upperclassmen. For their first semester president they elected lack Reese, and Bob Thorpe was their second semester president. This year has been very successful. They started an approximate S580 proj- ect in which a new trophy case was selected. A de- pendable committee was chosen for the Annual junior Prom which was held May 2. These juniors had the second highest representation in C.S.F. and not only is it said the class is rated high scholasti- cally, but they have much hidden talent. The junior class is made of the stuff which makes for the good name of our school. MR. LOUIS GRUSH MR. It is rumored that a stereophonic phonograph will be purchased for the use of school benefits and activities. The class of '61 shows great promise and is sure to be an effervescent junior class next year. FRE SHMEN The freshman class was officially welcomed to Shasta High at the annual freshman reception. The class was well represented. The annual magazine sale brought in over SLUOO with Kay Watt taking the lead as top salesman. TRACK As the result of losing seven men either by gradu- ation or by transfer, the track team doesn't look so good this year. But with such returning lettermen as Ierry Sherman and Ron Teach and the development of some of the underclassmen, things could brighten up, Sherman should have a great season in his specialty of polefvaulting and Teach should do equal- ly well in his favorite sprints and short distance runf ning. One of the big questions that Iohn Grantham, coach, will have to answer is who will fill the gap left by the distance runner, Curtis Frembling. SPRING BADMIN TON AND TENNIS Badminton was the first sport of the spring season. G.A.A. members who were interested in this sport signed up in the girls' gym. They could sign up to play in the singles or doubles tournament or both. This year the games were held in the girls' gym and the college gym. Another net game which started in the spring was tennis. Tennis was not sponsored by G.A.A., but any girl interested in the sport could try out for the school team. This year Kathleen Binks, Carolyn Clare, Donna Bidwell, Liz McClain, Sue Bertotti, and Sharon Glad- well represented Shasta on the tennis team. One school that the team plays almost every year is Eureka, and the girls are looking forward to playing the school again this year. Due to the Daisy deadline, the results of the bad- minton and tennis games are unknown. LaREE SIMON Reach Na cy R acn' Manager X Q 7 GAA You're out, Justin! JUDY ACURSO SOFTBALL After a full and active year in 1959, the Qirls' Athletic Association ended the spring season and its various sport activities with the always enjoyable game, softball. Softball offered its participants their last chance of the year to earn points for a letter, a star, or a pin. This popular game, which is one of the few out-of-doors G.A.A. sports, was played on the girls' softball field. Since the Daisy has a final deadline to meet, we will not be able to give the captains of the softball teams or the final standings in the G.A A. games: but Iudy Acurso, sports man- ager, is looking forward to a profitable, exciting season.
