He can play the role of playwright for a skit, coun- selor for perplexing problems, or act in the capacity of a friend. The Class of l952 is particularly indebted to him for his inspiring leadership during our Sophomore and Iunior years. Now in his position of Vice Principal he has again lent us his aid and guid- ance. lt is because of his unselfish effort, his fine personality, and his noble character that We, the Staff of the l952 Daisy, dedicate this book to Mr. Charles F. Denny. . We sholl miss their toces, but their footsteps will ever echo in our heorts. LE ROY BRITTON GERALD BERTAGNA GILBERT DeFORREST IACKSON PRICE Young people are seldom conscious of the great changes that are taking place in the world about them. This is quite natural, for they have known no other age. Nevertheless, it is plain to members of a high school graduating class today that the times are unsettled and very uncertain. Old philosophies have been questioned: age-old institutions have been flaunted. It is impossible to plan into the future with any degree of certainty. There results a condition of great confusion, and but little feeling of per- sonal security. The mind of man has conquered the land, the sea, and the air. Science has split the atom and built the atomic bomb. We have come almost to believe that there is nothing our scientists cannot do for us. Yet, with all their masterful achievements, we do not have a sense of well-being and security. There are perhaps many causes contributing to this condition today. But, most of all, perhaps, is the fact that We are believing in science--in man, in- stead of in God. The mind of man cannot long deny the source of its divinity, nor can it con- tinue to labor productively in a spiritual vacuum. Science without a soul is much like knowledge without Wisdom. Man cannot live by bread alone. Great men like Lincoln learned early in life that there is a knowledge deeper than logic, richer than science. lt is the Wisdom of an Almighty. As you leave the cloistered halls of your school, and the sheltered environ- ment of your homes, to find your place in the sun, it will be well for you to put your confidence in a Supreme Being and place the highest values in the things of the Spirit. District Superintendent UPPER HAROLD P Principal , . sg -Ska ,1 5253513 X sfxttjfiifgst 3 1, -i The school year oi 1951-52 has come to an end and the class of '52 has com- pleted a pleasant tour years here at Shasta Union High School. When this class ot 1952 entered High School conditions seemed to be settled to the extent that one could look forward to security in the years ahead but the last four years have brought tremendous changes in the world, including the Korean situation in which many former students and graduates of Shasta Union High School have already taken an active part. The years ahead seem uncertain but with a sound educational background, together with the moral and spiritual values which have become a part of you through your educational experiences in your home, your school and your church, you will be able to meet the future a day at a time and solve the prob- lems as they arise. As you go into another school experience, the work world, or into a military service, you will have many problems to solve but by being deliberate and keeping a level head you will be able to solve your problems. The world situation is very tense and within the next few years it is very important that We all work for the American way ot life in order that not only we, but the future generations, may live in a free World. , .mv . vkfqfxgit . 3 4.7.4 1255 sq. DONALD MARVIN Adviser As I sit here among the scramble of books, papers, and people, I think how wonderful it has been to be editor of the Shasta Daisy. As I look back, I find that we worked hard, fought quite often, but had lots of fun bringing this book to you. If you enjoy the Daisy half as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you, we shall be happy. BUDDY FRANK President, Fall Semester President, Spring Scmollor ln September of l948 the class of '52 entered the halls of Shasta High. lust another bunch of green- horns then, but in four short years they had made an impression that would linger long after many of them had been forgotten. Under the leadership of Paul Williams and Bob Milton the class of '52 gained its initial velocity. The class was immediately recognized as possess- ing great qualities of leadership, scholarship, and athletic ability. Their contributions of organization leaders, entertainers, and athletes were in no small numbers. As sophomores they added momentum to their record-breaking career. With first Dearle Tolladay as president, and then Don Avey, they sponsored the Mad Hatter dance, proving their financial abil- ities by clearing more profit than any other dance of the year. ln their junior year the class of '52 exemplified their salesmanship by breaking all previous maga- zine sales records in selling 552592.80 worth of mag- azines. The class chose Bruce Bedynek and Larry Clark as successive presidents and gave outstand- ing delegates to Boys' State, Girls' State, the Rich- ardson Springs Conference, and various student leaders' conferences. Finally carne the crowning year. The richest class in school, with David Hummel and then Buddy Frank as presidents, made plans for a beau- tiful fountain as a parting gift to the school. They gave Larry Clark and Bob Brinkerhoff as outstand- ing student bcdy presidents, and they filled lesser offices with more of their aspiring leaders. ln all this, the class of l952 can look back with justifiable pride on a job well done. The precedent they have set at Shasta High will long remain, challenging future classes who would aspire to such greatness. The student council, under the fine leadership of council president Bob Milton, brought about many needed improvements in the governing of the school dur- ing the first semester. The main project was the discussion of a change in the way revenue from student body card sales may be divided in the years to corne. This project Was not completed during the first semester, so it was carried over to the second. Another project during the first semester was the setting aside of a day for a school-wide clean-up by the student body. Refuse containers were then put around the grounds to prevent further Cluttering. The outedated constitution was also considered by the council, and a corn- niittee was appointed to look into its revision. FIRST ROW, lei! to right: C. Hall, E. Cook, F. King. M. Mcllnaney. E. The honor society maintained its motto Scholarship for Service, and its ability to participate in other school activities by decorating the large Christmas Tree in the entrance of our school. Our annual Sno-Ball was a great success with the decorations acclaimed the most beautiful Shasta has seen in the past eight years. Hal Rodman in Portraits in Make-Up was the pay assembly the C.S.F. sponsored this year, and it proved to be one of the most delightful our student body has witnessed.
