THE 1949-1950 SCHOOL YEAR During The pasT school year ShasTa High's sTudenTs were under The guidance oT Ray SwarTs and James Moore, our Two sTudenT body presidenis. We parTicipaTed very Tully in a wide VarieTy oT acTiviTies and conTinued To uphold our school's excellenT repuTaTion. STarTing The year OTT wiTh a bang in The Tield oT aThleTics, our gridiron perTormers on boTh The varsiTy and The iayvee squads earned The righT To wear The TooTball charms which may be carried only by members oT a championship Team. The Big Six League as of This year became The Big Five, buT as one of our TooTball coaches remarked, WhaTever iT is. we won iT. Our A and B basl4eTball Teams were unable To win The championships in Their sporT. However. our A Team won The maioriTy of iTs games. and had The disTincTion of having The highesT scorer in The Big Five League -Gene Dais. The largesT TurnouT Tor boxing in ShasTa High's hisTory. and The besT TighTs, were wiTnessed This year. We had many good assemblies in our nine monThs spenT aT ShasTa. The compeTiTive class assemblies were again sTaged, and much TalenT was displayed. ShasTa High sTudenTs also puT on Two exchange assemblies--aT Red BluTT and Dunsmuir. We had a well-qualiTied STudenT Council, mosT oT whose members aTTended The Chico STudenT Leaders' Conference. 1 Our eighTeen organizaTions, Tor some oT which-like The Block S and C.S.F.--The righT To join musT be earned, and Tor oThers oT which The requiremenT is inTeresT, have all conTribuTed Their pa rT To ShasTa's school spiriT. Many enjoyable dances were sponsored by These clubs: such as, The MiliTary Ball, The C.S.F. Spring Dance. The Sadie Hawlcin's Day Dance, The Pioneer Day Dance, The Spanish FiesTa and The GvoTTa Koppa Poppa. The FuTure Teachers' AssociaTion. organized in April oT lasT year. elecTed iTs TirsT seT oT oTTicers in SepTember, I949. The Hi-Y Club was reorganized This year. Square dancing, which is enioyed by all, became very popular aT our school during The laTTer parT oT The year. lnsTrucTion was given on Wednesday nighTs, and dances were held aT noon and on Friday nighTs. The consTrucTion work on a Ten-classroom addiTion disTurbed classroom rouTine some- whaT, and made parT-Time sidewalk superinTendenTs oT some oT us: buT iT will greaTly relieve The crowded concliTions which we had To puT up wiTh This year. Our enrollmenT has sTeadily increased aT The raTe oT abouT IOO pupils per year Tor The pasT Tour years. and aT The sTarT oi This year iT had reached The ToTal oT over l35O. Many seniors conTerred wiTh Dr. Collyer in I950, wiTh The expecTancy oT enTering ShasTa Junior College in The Tall oT This year. The VarieTy Show, which was puT on This year under The direcTion of Mr. BeclceTT and Mr. Cooper, was a big Tinancial success and well worTh seeing. Thus by The Time our T949-T950 session had drawn To a close, we, The AssociaTecl STudenTs oT ShasTa Union High School, had produced a record oT accomplishmenTs Tor which we could be iusTly proud.
