EDITCDRIAL As I sit here, alone, in the Daisy Den with paste, scissors, clip- pings, and all the paraphernalia that go with a yearbook prof duction roorn about me, thoughts of this past year's work flash before me. A great deal of tirne, energy, and thought have been put into this book but I shall feel that every rninute of it has been well spent if you, the students, are pleased with the Forty-niners' annual. I remember when the staff decided upon the theme of the book. Actually, our choice was inevitable for it was rnost fitting that we, the Forty-niners of the Twentieth Century, should pay tribute to the Forty-niners of the previous century. As the year progressed, one deadline after another swept by until, finally, we had before us the finished product all ready for the presses. We all let out deep sighs of relief! Now that our work is cornpleted, I should like to express niy gratitude for the fine cooperation given me by everyone with whom I worked in the publication of this book. It was, indeed, an honor to be editor of the yearbook for such a fine school. I thank you sincerely, IIM WILLIAMS.

CUR PRINCIPALS MESSAGE It is fitting that on the one hundredth anniversary of the State of California. this yearbook should be dedicated to the empire builders of the past--e-the pio- neers of 1849. To them, we owe much of the heritage we are privileged to enioy today. The courage and indomitable spirit of these pioneer people gave to California great leaders like Iohn Sutter, Leland Stanford, Major Reading, and Peter Lassen. These were men to match her mountains. We salute them and thank them for giving this great state its birth, a land of opportunity for us to now enjoy. But while we dedicate the yearbook to these great leaders, and their deeds of a century past, let us also pause a moment to think of the years ahead. lt is for us, the youth of California, to dedicate ourselves, not to a past, but to a glorious future. Our job here now, today, is to fortify ourselves with a determi- nation to grow intellectually, spiritually, morally-to grow in knowledge and wisdom, in attitudes and ideals. Now is our opportunity to develop and to become real people, the kind that Shasta Union High School will be proud to claim as alumni. Doing this, we shall then look to the future with confidence, knowing that fathers of a new era, our children, and our children's children can say, God gave us men to match our mountains.
