A great deal of tirne, energy, and thought have been put into this book but I shall feel that every rninute of it has been well spent if you, the students, are pleased with the Forty-niners' annual. I remember when the staff decided upon the theme of the book. Actually, our choice was inevitable for it was rnost fitting that we, the Forty-niners of the Twentieth Century, should pay tribute to the Forty-niners of the previous century. As the year progressed, one deadline after another swept by until, finally, we had before us the finished product all ready for the presses. We all let out deep sighs of relief! Now that our work is cornpleted, I should like to express niy gratitude for the fine cooperation given me by everyone with whom I worked in the publication of this book. It was, indeed, an honor to be editor of the yearbook for such a fine school. I thank you sincerely, IIM WILLIAMS. CUR PRINCIPALS MESSAGE It is fitting that on the one hundredth anniversary of the State of California. this yearbook should be dedicated to the empire builders of the past--e-the pio- neers of 1849. To them, we owe much of the heritage we are privileged to enioy today. The courage and indomitable spirit of these pioneer people gave to California great leaders like Iohn Sutter, Leland Stanford, Major Reading, and Peter Lassen. These were men to match her mountains. We salute them and thank them for giving this great state its birth, a land of opportunity for us to now enjoy. But while we dedicate the yearbook to these great leaders, and their deeds of a century past, let us also pause a moment to think of the years ahead. lt is for us, the youth of California, to dedicate ourselves, not to a past, but to a glorious future. Our job here now, today, is to fortify ourselves with a determi- nation to grow intellectually, spiritually, morally-to grow in knowledge and wisdom, in attitudes and ideals. Now is our opportunity to develop and to become real people, the kind that Shasta Union High School will be proud to claim as alumni. Doing this, we shall then look to the future with confidence, knowing that fathers of a new era, our children, and our children's children can say, God gave us men to match our mountains. THE FCDRTY-NINERS STCDRY Well, at last weve reached the long sought after goaleeeafter four memorable years' -long when we think of the homework and exams, yet short when we remember the good times we had: years that will prove to be the most valuable in our lives because during those years we grew from childhood to adulthood, from bashful, giggling freshmen to all-powerful seniors, but that's getting ahead of the story. Four years ago we the class of fortf nine entered tne halls of Shasta High Maybe lv didnt look ltke much then lust a bunch of scared little kids But underneath we had the courage and the nerve it took to live up to our name the forty niners Like those hardy pioneers who had to break trails across an unexplored nation we too had a new territory to explore new worlds to con quer After the first few weeks those who had survived initiation ceremonies and the Freshman Reception settled down to adapting themselves to an entirely new type of school l1fe We first distinguished ourselves by electing as our f1rs semester officers five very capable students lohn Kincaid president Henry Duggins vice president MerleneBurm1ngham secretary lack Lamplough treas urer Corrine Swarts yell leader These students saw us through the first lap of our Journey Our main event of the year was the Fro h Return which was a big success as far as we were concerned Qur second semester officers were lerry lefcoat presldent Gary Elmslie vice president Diane Yank secretary lack Ures treasurer and Annette Hayball yell leader We were well represented in all school activities Thus ended our first year and we looked forward to scaling new heights in the years to come Our sophomore year found us looking scornfully down on the lowly fresh men We initiated them and believe y u me we did a good Job of it We started the year off right by electing Frank McFnaney presrdent Henry Duggins vice president Carol McArthur secretary lim Williams treasurer and Helen Fla ltarty and Frankie Burke yell leaders These officers w re succeeded by Terry McKinney president Larry Anderson v1cepres1dent Frankie Madrid secretary D tn Heyler tr asurer and for the second tim Helen Flahartv and Frankie Burke ts yell leaders ree f enrers found stud rt ody offic s Frank M Fnanef secr t try frank Ur s tax ccllec or and ler y lefcoat treasur r Ne w Ie v ry Nell represented in sports Dave spears was n h varsity arn in fo t all and fi boys made the A t am in ha kethall Terry M Kin e a tn ead tl school play as eiry ld h that 'Xfany bers ex elled to asttc a ent and n opno rsor c a comp tsed a drge ar nd for th second t n e 1 er aware t 1 J ar Nel spe . , . Shasta Cadet Corps Sl-IASTA CADET CCRPS Companies E and Second Battalion, Second Regiment, Shasta's Cadet Corps has terminated what well may be the most active year in its history. To supplement the regular training program, the Battalion staff planned and executed two field problems. One a night problem on the Cno-lgo road in Ianu- ary, pitted the two companies against the Battalion Staff. The other, an overnight bivouac, held at an undisclosed location fifty miles from Redding, featured a day and night problem combination. At the time this article was written, Shasta had already won a rifle match from Mt. Shasta and Yreka, and was preparing a ten-man team for the regional and state meet for the Governors Cup and the St. Clawson trophy. One of the most noticeable changes in the corps this year was the change from suntan to olive drab uniform. The new uniforms arrived too late for the Military Ball in Ianuary, but they did come in time for the Army Day and Me- morial Day parades, in which the cadets marched. Inspection! History was made the very first day of schooi this year when the students found an issue of the Volcano hot off the press waiting for them. Deadline every Monday and Wednesday -issue of the paper every Mon- day. Yes, this year the Volcano became a weekly. The paper also became smaiier in size ernuch easier to handle and to read behind your biology book. During the first semester under the editorship of Frankie Madrid, the Vol- cano took on several enterprises. When the bond election was a big issue about school, the Voicano published a special issue and mailed this issue to the par- ents, urging them to vote yes. in December everyone threw his strength, endurance, and leisure hours into a very special edition. It was the twenty-two page Christmas edition. Under Frankie, the staff gave the news, features, and sports very efficiently. With the turn of the semester, Iim Murphy stepped into the editorship. With a staff made up of seasoned staff members and a few cubs stepping up, Murph and his managing editor, Kay Myers, kept the news before the student body with a continuation of the weekly eruptions. in the early spring the staff edited a special tournament edition, covering interesting facts about the teams, and statistics on the games they piayed in their leagues. Public schools week saw the eruption of a special edition. This paper was sent to the parents to better acquaint them with our school. The night of open house, the Volcano covered the program with a two-page paper. This served as a program for those attending. We can be proud of our school paper and its staff. To earn these points, a girl must par- ticipate in some athletic activity during the noon hour for a period of two weeks. These activities are: volleyball, badminton, ping pong, basketball, track, tennis, softball, and speedball. Other ways of earning points are: participation in a play- day or skit, serving on committees and being an officer, manager, or captain. The girl holding the office of president must be a Circle S member. At the end of each year an outstanding senior G.A.A. girl is chosen by the members of C.A.A and the faculty to have her name engraved on the Cf.A.A. Golden Cup. This is sponsored by the Womens Improvement Club of Redding. The able advisor of G.A.A is Miss Lida larmon, who helps out a great deal in the club activities. FUTURE FARMERS The Future Farmers of America, more commonly known as the F.F.A., is a national organization of, by, and for boys studying vocational agriculture in public secondary schools under the provisions of the National Vocational 'Edu- cation Acts. lt is a noneprofit, non-political farm youth organization of voluntary membership, designed to take its place along with other agencies striving for the development of leadership, the building of a more permanent agriculture and the improvement of country life. lt constitutes one of the most efficient agricul- ture teaching devices that has been discovered up to the present time. The Redding Chapter PPA. secured its charter lanuary l5, 1930, and was admitted as the 59th chapter in the state. ln the past eighteen years the local chapter has grown in size, in recognition, and in power. Early in the year, the F.F.A. sponsors the annual Ag Ball. This is a gala affair with booths of various kinds. The highlight of the evening is the crown- ing of the Ag Queen. Some additional activities are the Bean Feed, Co-op Quiz, a public speaking contest, the Red Bluff Field Day, the annual School Fair, and the Parents and Sons Banquet. This year the club has established a feed cooperative which enables our students to get their feed at a much lower rate. The students purchased a feed mixer and grinder so that they could grind and mix their own feed rations. This year they have purchased, ground, mixed, and sold over fifty tons of grain, amounting to over 33,000 in value. ,4- 45' BILL IONES FRONT ROW l it to gh! Selling and all the other activities, including frequent rallies, are part of the purpose of the societyfto promote school spirit. They get results, too, in the form of a peppy and extremely vocal rooters' section in traditional colors. Even the goal posts are glorified with crepe paper to give the football games that added touch. As an extra activity, the most loyal supporters fill the game-going public with cakes and candy and replenish the treasury with proceeds. Once a year pep is concentrated on entertaining the student body at a dance that is sure to be one with the most fun, though not necessarily the most refined. This year the Pep Society is starting a policy of wearing identifying sweaters and pins. So when you see a guy or a gal sporting a pep sweater or a pin, it means hes proud to be a member of the liveliest crowd in the best school of all in California. PEP Color Section. Chico was the only scare that Shasta got in league play, but the Wolves held it to an O-U tie. This year's varsity was really a great football team and to the per- son directly responsible for making it so was our own Coach Chuck Sharpe.
