M -ei tt 55025 Basketball In the Shasta Union High School, as well as in other schools, ath- letics comprises one of the main activities. Our seasons usually open with a bang and end with a gasp, but this year our basketball season opened strong and continued so for practically the whole season. We went out with high hopes this year in basketball, as we had prac- tically all of last year's team left. There was no excuse for losing out this year for we had one of the best teams in Northern California, but as ever before. individual playing and over-confidence beat us. VVe have to thank Mr. C. NVitherow for what we have done. for, if it were not for his persistent effort to overcome our old style, backwoods, sledge hammer methods of playing, we would not have won even a. practice game. The games resulted as follows: Our first game was played with Anderson. The hall at Anderson is small and has a very slippery floor, but we managed to keep on our fe et for the forty minutes and came through on the long end to the tune of 37 21 Our next game was also a practice game with Marysville This club came up here with a good representation but we easily won The score was 15 6 at the end of twenty minutes After a short rest we started again and the game was literally a slaughter for the next twenty mm utes And so we finished our second practice game After this game we had another practice game with Red Bluff flI 71 KN IC-Xl Tl NIUHI Is NI lfll I I-X Fifty mne k , , ' v . . 1 ' , ' l ll, Pflllxsli tllfjlll, Ill'lIflA.RlVJO, Tll.-X'I'CI'1ER, lvlrrlilfliflxv lf'fJAf'lll l,.'L.' '. '.,., iQ',.. ' ,Sl ,.l'K As Red Bluff has always been our most famous rlv al we were determined to wlpe out the defeat of last year The game was played at Red Bluff n the new gymnasium We started about 9 oclock The score was decidedly against us the first half as we couldn t get stalted so the first half ended 20 10 in fav or of Red Bluff During the rest of the game we were the object or much kidding about our playing but we only answered Walt twentv ll1llll1t6S When the gong rang we started again and n tvvtnty mm utes scored 18 pomts to our opponents 7 thus capturing the game Our first league game was with Anderson as soon as the gam started we knew that something had cracked and we soon saw that it vv as our team work 'lhe harder we trled to pull together the farther we pulled apart and so we struggled on lllltll the finish eafb man for himself Ev en through this rottenness the visitors only beat us 29 28 Our next game was with Cornmg and when we went up against this club we played the team which had won four straight champlonshlps 111 the movie house which was very small As soon as the gan e started we knew that we had never played a team of thls calibre before Ou opponents played a veiy good game and we kept very close to them The only reason they led was because we couldnt hit the goal 9 we had about two shots to their one The Iilst half ended wlth a score of 9 4 against us We st11l had practlcally an even chance and we felt sure we could come through with some goods m the last half The tcond halt started Just as fast and furious as the first but as we were doing our best and couldn t catch them the game ended P4 11 We are Wllllllg to admit defeat to this club because it IS considered one of the fastest h1gh school teams m the state and lt IS the cleanest and squarest team we have had the good fortune to play Our next league game came about two weeks later wlth Red Bluif The game was fast and rough and found Red Bluff on the top at the end of the first half by a score ot 14 10 But we were not discouraged and when the second half started we p'ayed harder than ever Red Bluff was still ahead by five pomts when the last four mmut s started but they were tired and so by very fast work we beat them bv one pomt 25 24 and finished our season by Wllllllllg the last game We hope that next year s team will do better and if they get busy and get a lot of practice games before the league season starts they wll stand a much better chance Sixty v L . v , v 7 . Y Baseball Baseball opened very weaklyg the chief reason for this was the fact that ever since the latter part of our basketball season all of our jazz slowly ebbed away, and left in its place a very dreamy bunch. Another reason was because some members of the last year's team very foolishly refused to go out and do their bit. At any rate our courageous young captain tried to build up a team, and it is to his credit that he built up a team which was without a doubt a better team than our rivals. After much practice, the time came for the first game. It was a prac- tice game and was at Red Bluff. The game was close and very good, and it was only due to the inexperience of some of our players that we lost the game by a score of 6-4. Although we were beaten in this affair the boys felt cabable of trimming Red Bluff in the practice game at home because of having had more practice Phe practice continued every day The day before the game was damp and cloudy but the Saturday of the game dawned fair and warmer The game was called at 2 30 At first it promised to be a good game but as the innings rolled by the playing of the S U H S became more and more ragged But we were not alone in our misery NIIDDLE NILRI HX KR-XXI-N LIX XX CH-XRFRAND KOBE BOTTUXI LROSS I XCR VNIFP l Sixty one U . . ,, . .
