An Qdyssey is define-d as an extended wandering or journey. The word is derived from the ancient Greek poem by HOYTICT which describes the wanderings of Qdvsseus after the Trojan War. It is most fitting that a book describing Shasta should be so entitled. The men of Shasta, the men which transformed her from a lifeless hulk of steel to a microcosm of society, began their wanderings in the wanning months of 1971. They assembled in bits and pieces to begin preparations for a journey to a far away war. Their journey was to cover 'many miles, and take many months of their lives. They were to see strange sights and far away lands. And like Odysseus, they were to continue their wanderings after the war had ended, after the others had gone home. The Odyssey of the Shasta is an adventure story, but there are no Hollywood heroics involved. The men of Shasta were given an overwhelming job, one which placed tremendous demands on every aspect of their lives, yet they rose to the task and strove on to excellence. No medal could ever adequately reward themg each man knows his own sacrifice. There is a certain simple dignity, a heroism of sorts, in the fact that these men persevered when the natural tendency was to give up. Thev excelled when human nature only called for half effort. This book tells the Odyssey of the Shasta, but only those who lived it know the real story.

Shasta began her Odyssey in Pascagoula, Mississippi. There the legacy of hard work began, a legacy she inherited from the first Shasta, AIC-6. From World War II to Korea to Vietnam, AE-6 did her demanding job for 27 years. The new SHASTA was bigger, more complicated, more efficient, and more comfortable than her predecessor, but the demanding job remained. While the celebration champagne was still wet on her massive hull, the task began. SHASTA had to be completed, made to run srnoothlyg she had to make ready for the war in the Pacific. ,I APRIL 3, 1971-! PASCAGOUL4 U. S.
