N-' An Qdyssey is define-d as an extended wandering or journey. The word is derived from the ancient Greek poem by HOYTICT which describes the wanderings of Qdvsseus after the Trojan War. It is most fitting that a book describing Shasta should be so entitled. The men of Shasta, the men which transformed her from a lifeless hulk of steel to a microcosm of society, began their wanderings in the wanning months of 1971. They assembled in bits and pieces to begin preparations for a journey to a far away war. Their journey was to cover 'many miles, and take many months of their lives. They were to see strange sights and far away lands. And like Odysseus, they were to continue their wanderings after the war had ended, after the others had gone home. The Odyssey of the Shasta is an adventure story, but there are no Hollywood heroics involved. The men of Shasta were given an overwhelming job, one which placed tremendous demands on every aspect of their lives, yet they rose to the task and strove on to excellence. No medal could ever adequately reward themg each man knows his own sacrifice. There is a certain simple dignity, a heroism of sorts, in the fact that these men persevered when the natural tendency was to give up. Thev excelled when human nature only called for half effort. This book tells the Odyssey of the Shasta, but only those who lived it know the real story. -Q 7 . .n 4 . , ,' ii' Y-wus ls. From World War II to Korea to Vietnam, AE-6 did her demanding job for 27 years. Shasta was given a traditional introduction to the fleet: bands played, admirals made speeches, and ladies applauded. The guests went aboard and marvelled at all the haze gray wonders, never realizing how far the road stretched ahead on the way to operational readiness. February, March, and April were hectic, exhausting months. The crew had to be transformed from a bewildered collection of strangers to a smoothly functioning unit. Great piles of equipment had to be installed and tested. Slowly each man realized the size of the task ahead. Precious little time was available to see historic Charleston, but liberty trips to Mayport and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida gave the crew a chance to rest. Rest they would need, for the months of preparation had pointed toward one thing and one thing only: GITMO. I :- -'. .uun,. .. . . Y ,,-., W . ,ln I. 5' fi la S' X 34--3 ,'! ,H . . 'if '. Every aspect of a ship's capability is put to the testg every system, every team, every man is graded. The hours are long, the pressure is intense. From dawn to dusk for three weeks Shasta was drilled, evaluated, and scrutinized by the sharp-eyed inspectors from the Fleet Training Group. The results were almost unbelievable: Shasta had missed a grade of excellent by a few hundredths of a point. Shasta had been at sea only two short weeks before beginning the training, and she outscored a ship of similar size that had been in commission seven years. After departing Cuba, the crew was able to relax for the first time in months. Jamaica and Cartegena, Columbia were found to be excellent liberty ports: the younger men of Shasta enjoyed their first glimpse of a foreign nation. Time to relax meant time to ponder the long trip to California and the many miles remaining before reaching Shasta's new homeport. August was spent operating with USS San -lose lAFS-7l during ships qualification trials off the coast of California. Day after day the two ships practiced using the tools of the trade. Soon the strange evolutions: approach, hookup. rigging, and breakaway all became second nature. The crew learned fast, and well it was, for much remained to be done. The fall months were spent in the shipyard in San Francisco correcting deficiencies in equipment and design that had become apparent over the months. lt was .a dreary time: predawn bus rides through the traffic over the Bay Bridge: rainy days at Triple A Shipyard: long hours of noise, dirt and confusion. It proved worth the price, for Shasta left in fighting trim, an efficient, complex machine. One of the few bright spots of the period was the Navy Day celebration on I3 Cctober, complete with bands, flags, and pretty girls. It was a welcome break in the shipyard routine.
