' P ' ., ,AA FORE' According to familiar phrase, Time waits for no man, we, the senior . class of 1959, this to be very true as we, now approach a different world a world of and duty. From now on it is up to us as individuals IL - '1 to decide which will profit us the most, We all have the same - --'l -.T portunity and the challenge with which to better our lives and the of others. For our education will cease hereg for others l twelve years have rich background for future Let us always have a high regard for the wonderful times we have had together as a group and the lasting friendships. May our one goal throughout life be better service to our community, our nation, and our God. This 1959 Devil's Log seeks to remind us of the many changes which have oc- curred since our present high school was opened in 1922 until the present, 1959. We, the class of 1959, therefore, wish to dedicate our yearbook to this high school which has offered a field of knowledge to all who have passed through its doors. However, with an eye on the future, we look forward, with the underclassmen, to the promise of a bigger and better educational system for the youth of our community as work progresses on the new high school which is now under construction. 2 TABLE 0F CONTENTS T Page 1- 11 12- 25 59 is 46- 61 62- 87 88-117 118-156 157-160 l i 5 as In 1922 the members of the Sharpsville school board purchased grounds on Thirteenth Street where a portable building was built to provide room for students in grades one and two. This al- leviated the overcrowded situation at the Robison school on Seventh Street. These portable buildings served their pur- pose throughout the years until the school year of 1957-1958 when operational costs made it economically unsound to continue their use. They are now maintained by the school board as storage rooms for various school materials and equipment. The original Sharpsville High School was erected on Mercer Avenue in 1869. The ground needed for this purpose was donated by Mr. Pierce. This brick structure con- sisted ofthe four southeast rooms of the present Deeter School. The students of all twelve grades attended the building and it provided room for about 200 students. In 1876 and 1883 additions were built to the Deeter Schoolg thereby bringing it to 4 CUT O its present physical size and appearance. With the completion of these new sec- tions, the building contained 10 rooms. The first class to receive diplomas from this building was the class of 1884 and consisted of 12 graduates. Miss Emma Deeter, for whom the building was later named, taught the first grade here from 1882 until her retirement in 1928. 5 The Robison building, which is located at Seventh Street, was erected in 1892 as a six room building which was built to ac- commodate approximately l50 pupils. The cost of the building was 316,000. Due to modern expansion and an ever growing population several extra rooms were built. It now consists of 10 rooms and it supplies substantial room for 217 pupils from grades one through six. The faculty is comprised of 8 classroom teachers and a principal, Miss Allen. During the past year a new cafeteria was installed to further provide the students with more of the newer facilities now available. This building was named in honor of Miss Emma Robison, who taught here from 1900 to 1937. 1 k1's'f.iS'M ,.,gA L,.. The first classes were held in the new building upon the retum from Christmas vacation in January of 1953. This new structure supplied adequate room For the 445 pupils which it housed. There were 12 classrooms, a cafeteria, and a gymnasium and auditorium combined. As the school attendance continued to grow it became apparent that this very new building could no longer handle the crowded situation and, therefore, plans were made for an addition. When the 1958--59 school session opened in September the new addition was open for use. The student enrollment Rnr the term was, approxi- mately, 468. Six extra classrooms and a new music room are now in opera- tion. There was 18 classroom teachers in the building and many of them originally taught in one of the old rural sciool houses. Mr. Samuel Davis is the school principal and he is also the elementary supervisor . Last of the one-room schools One of the most recent types of school architecture in our community is the Pebly building which was started in 1955 and was completed in the fall of 1956. This modern structure is composed of 12 classrooms, and an all-purpose room used as a gymnasium, an auditorium, and a cafeteria. As the doors ofthe Pebly Building opened, 350 students were enrolled. It is staffed by l3 teachers and a principal, Mr. McWhirter. Assisting these teachers are special subject instructors: in music and art who visit each room once a week. The school was named for former Superintendent of Sharpsville Schools, Mr. Harry Pebly, who retired in June of 1957 after 36 years of service to our school system. 7 -NNN N-4 lxst at 'M' r' SH RPSVILLE HIGH SCHCGL Just as we today face a growing population and crowded conditions the youth of a past era faced the same problems. The old high school on Mercer Avenue was bulging at the seams and could no longer contain the growing school population of that day. Plans for the new high school were finally completed and the selected site was the top of the hill on Ridge Avenue. The contract was let to Wallis and Carley, contractors, of Sharon. This new building was the very latest in modern school construction and it had all the modern equipment of that day. It was comprised of 14 classrooms and a combination gymnasium and auditorium and it housed about 250 students with room for 150 more. There were 12 teachers at this time, a superintendent, and a principal. 8 4-'J Q , if ix ,n Uv' ...VS . -V W. ,Q , H ' . :TH 'ZA-1 V, . 1. 4 V , , Q51 'N' Q 1 is , ,L A A' -2' ,-f' 1 -' fi, K, AL ',Q6':.,tg'Q' ' '1 'bn '-9, Q,M N' V ,3V.bf4',gL.w,9-,,k elif. ,. One very outstanding reason was that the Seniors knew when they returned it would not be to the Deeter building, then known as the high school, but to the new Sharpsville High School. Upon entering the building, they found large rooms, spacious corridors, and the newest of modern conveniences. The principal of this new high school was Mr. Harry E. Pebly, who was later to become superintendent, and serving as superintendent at this time was Mr. William Johnson. Several teachers who taught here at this time were, Miss Leban, Miss Moore, Mr. Servart and Miss Campbell. The education which was offered was of a classical form with foreign language, science, mathematics, and social studies being taught. In the field of sports, baseball was the largest attraction. Football ranked very high and an organized basketball team was formed, for the first year, with Mr. Pebly as coach. Miss Leban, the English teacher, directed the first class day program ever given by a senior class at Sharpsville in 1922. The program consisted ofa play entitled The Arrival of Kitty. It was presented at the United Brethren Church on Ridge Avenue. 10 3 3 , 4? -L - iw M A S, .g Q , 2 H ' 1 Q ii 54 , .2 i ,f , K . 4'fk,l , X . 5 2 , k K i if , fir' A 5 , V, mg k..V if U me sz? ,O - an-f f M9 ,mf f ,. ng K , fm H E 2 S ,, ' Z, ,M au' , ,, A . ff K K 4' ff W nn. ROBINS Principal Sharpsville High School EDWIN J. FLEGAL Superintendent Sharpsville Joint Schools M - H ' f FAREWELL SE 10115 Asl write my farewell message to the Seniors of Sharpsville Joint Schools I think it might be just as ap- propriate to say Hello and greet you as young Ameri- can Citizens. You have gone to school now for twelve years and although you have not won all your battles, both physically and mentally, I hope you can all say I fought them fairly. If you have gained that one prin- ciple your future life will be better and our nation will be vastly improved by its use. As you leave the doors of your school you should know that in life you will not win all your battles. Fight them fairly and take defeat with a graceful smile as well as a victory with humility. I sincerely hope and believe that the knowledge and training you received, the virtues and attitudes you de- veloped, and the excellent guidance you were given in all fields will bolster your self confidence and courage to meet the challenge of the future. In years to come as you look again through this book I hope it will bring back a storehouse of pleasant mem- ories and associations. To some of you it will also bring back pleasant memories of hard work. It is only when we look at work in the future does it appear distasteful, after it is over it leaves a wonderful feeling of ac- complishment. To all of you as Young Americans I want to extend my hand in friendship and fellowship. May all of your futures be bright and promising. Sincerely, Edwin J. Flegal Superintendent To you seniors who are about to graduate I would like to extend my sincere congratulations and best wishes for your happiness and success in the future. You have worked and waited to achieve the status of high school graduates. Your parents have sacrificed much in time, worry and money to bring you to the point of graduation. Your teachers have worked hard to instill in you good living habits, punctuality and dependability as well as attempting to pass on to you knowledge that will benefit you as adults. These many contributions by you, your parents and your teachers are the necessary ingredients of our Ameri- can educational system. You, the individual, are the product of this system. It is you and your actions which will determine whether or not this system of education is doing the job. Wit.h our world torn and confused by the many con- flicting ideologies of government and life, we are de- pending on our American youth to enter into adult life to accept and overcome all challenges. Upon you and others like you, throughout the nation, we are placing our entire hope and faith in the future of our country. I challenge you, to go forward to meet the responsi- bilities and tests that lie ahead, and may you come through undaunted and with heads held high. Good luck, Charles E. Robins 1 l 5 r 2 no 14 Junior High Principal Anita Alderman Understanding, wisdom, and a love for her work are just a few of the qualities which have aided Miss Anita Alderman in her duties as Junior High Principal and Junior High English teacher. She has acquired this wisdom and understanding from the many years of experience she has had in the teaching field. Many students have passed through her classroom and have come away richer in the knowledge which they gained from Miss Alderman. Girls' Guidance Miss Rozella Heilman In taking up her position as Dean of Girls in September, 1958, Miss Rozella I-leilman not only lessened the tremendous amount of work to be done by Mr. John Mattern, pre- viously counselor for both boys and girls, but also fulfilled an ambition to be a guid- ance counselor. She has had a successful year in performing her duties, interviewing each senior girl, aiding and advising them with their choice of a career, serving as a confidant for personal problems and being a true and faithful friend to each one as well. Boys' Guidance Mr. John Mattern Since Mr. John Mattern, Dean of Boys has had several years experience in counseling young people, he is able to discern many of the problems of youth. By giving various aptitude tests, he andMiss I-leilman are able to acquire a very informative file on each student, thereby enabling them to help each with his own individual problems. Inter- viewing each senior boy and aiding any other student who comes to him, is just a small amount of the work he does each year. 16 President Vice-President Jack Moore Char les Moyer Secretary Treasurer George Allen Charles.Sullivan SHARPSVILLE JOIN T SCHOOL BOARD The members of our school board devote much of their time and ability in helping to formulate, guide, and maintain the various policies of our school program. Monitors are to be courteous to visitors and to act as guides during their visit. They can be seen at any time during the day running about the building doing odd jobs, from delivering messages to passing out absentee lists. Besides these duties they try to busy themselves with their everyday homework. This year the monitor staff is composed of fourteen very efficient members who quietly go about their work 1 everyday while classes are being held, Crowded hallways show need for new building now under construction. fy .L 2 K HW s. When the club was first or- ganized several years ago, they had one movie projector and have since built up their equipment to include: two still film projectors, two 16 mm. movie machines, two record players, one tape recorder, one disk recorder, and one opaque projector. Contributions from the various service clubs, for work rendered by the boys, is put into an activity fund which is used to pay for a pin which each projectionist gets at the end of his senior year. STAGE CREW Sharpsville High School's three-man stage crew consists of Jim Bertolasio, Mike Shcmancik. and Torn Morrison and is under the general supervision of Mr. John Liko. These boys work during study halls and frequently will be found after school preparing the stage for a play. it is their job to set up flats and they are also re- sponsible for the management of props. When the night of a play rolls around the stage crew has put in many hours of tiring work ready- ing the stage for the production. These boys play a fundamental role backstage and without them a suc- cessful dramatic production would be impossible. L. Under the general supervision of Mrs. Jean Louden, the society presents a number of one-act plays throughout tnc school year for viewing by the student body. The society helps to train those students who are interested in drarnatics, so that they will have a general idea of how an actual Broadway show is produced. Setting up the stage, directing one-act plays, lighting and sound effects and prompting are just a few of the things that the teenage actors and actresses learn during the production of a one-act play. The Blue and White cagers, under head coach Mr. Steve Gergely, not only posted an impressive 16-6 won-lost record which included the Mercer County Class A Championship, but also advanced into the district playoffs. Besides being a championship team they were also record- breakers. Their total output of 107 points on the 23rd of January exceeded the former school record by 20 points, and junior forward Jim Timmerman also cracked the individual scoring total per single game on the home court by firing 35 points through cords as well as posting a new high total of field goals for one game:--16 out of 19 attempts. After getting off to a disappointing start the Devil's soon found the range and closed our the season's schedule by winning 13 of l5 regular season contests. In two opening losses, the Gergelymen couldn't quite find themselves as they lost by close margins to Meadville and Brook- field. Several games later at West Middlesex the cagers again lost a close one but then it was all Sharpsville. In league competition Sharpsville kept a clean slate by sweeping its two game series with Greenville, Grove City, and Hickory to cop the class A title. In the District lO playoff game with Erie Strong Vincent, the Blue Devils lost a tough decision by a 59-47 score. Four seniors, Bill Wilds, Ray Benetto, Ron Filer, and Chuck Rockwell contributed greatly to the 59 championship te am. The invaluable services of these four will be sorely missed by Coach Gergely next season, but a host of underclassmen are ready and eager to fill their sneakers. Members of this year's team who will be eligible next year are Jim Timmerman, Kirk Heilman, Bill Buckley, Jack Lary, King Williams, Chuck McNally, Bob Drobney, and Dave Nelson, all juniors. We wish to thank Mrs. Chloe Jackson Wheeler and Mr. Harry E. Pebly, former superintendent, for information and pictures used in the historical section of this book. . . To the faculty and staff of Sharpsville High School we would like to extend our thanks for the splendid co- operation given to the staff throughout the year when we at times disrupted the schedule and routine with photography schedules, etc. . . To the patrons and friends listed above and on previous pages many thanks for your financial support. . . A special word of sincere appreciation goes to Mr. Jack Merle of Rembrandt Studios in Sharon. Mr. Merle provided us with all individual student pictures plus over 450 excellent group pictures and snapshots. All of these fine pictures were given absolutely free of charge to show Rembrandt Studios' appreciation of the busi- ness given by the Seniors in ordering the senior portraits. gr S ,ps an W if A 1 :P 2 s R S is is fi K! is i, X f 3? , 3 E Qfiiiasffis ' A Q 5 f 5 ,. , .Q in A fgg.
