Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1987 volume:

Dedication Miss Barbara Bucclf rro We, the class of 1987, proudly dedicate the 1987 CLARION to our advisor and friend. Miss Barbara Bucciferro. Now seems like the best time to express our gratitude to you for tolerating our behavior for the past four years. The services that you put forth helped us with out success. The things that you have taught us will remain with us for the rest of our lives. Although at times you were impatient with us, we are now aware that most babysitters are occasionally. As we approach our gradua- tion day, we know you won't be missed as greatly, because you are in our heart and mind. It is with great pride and much appreciation that we dedicate this yearbook to you, BUTCHIE. Thank. You The class of 1987 would like to thank our advi- sor, Mr. Richard Sanders. Although you were our silent advisor, you added something special to our success. You always had an appropriate re- mark or action to keep us in line, especially dur- ing our “balloon volleyball game. We will think about you all the time, especially during the pledge. You will be greatly missed Colonel Sanders. Luck and love always, The Class Of 1987 We would also like to thank Mrs. Helen Lane. We have greatly appreciated your talent, patience, and humor throughout our high school years. You have given us a new outlook on life and on young children. Things you have taught us will remain with us forever- more. Thank you for always being yourself and may the rest of your life be as enriching as you have made ours. With Sincere Respect and Admiration, The Class Of 1987 3 Superintendent Mr. Ronald D Raqu tte The road to the top starts with small steps. The Class of 1987 are on their way to becoming successful, and pro- ductive members of the community and the nation. The educational background, opportunities, and activites offered your class in a small rural school environment have paved the way for excellence in your future. Remember small is better. It is not the quantity that counts, it is the quality that ultimately will make the dif- ference. Education in Sharon Springs Central School should be synonymous with Made in America . Both are marks of quality, pride, and craftsmanship. You, the Class of 1987, leave high school with a background that supports quality. In all your future endeavors, keep in mind that your ability to create products that are recognized for their quality is a direct result of your experiences in our school. Be a member of the community, and the nation, who in every small way, fo- cuses on producing quality that will some day become your legacy. Osterhoudt Mr , Marions Last year a dear and special lady retired, leaving an empty place in our cafeteria. Mrs. Parsons was always there. Her strength and support for the many classes that passed through the lunch lines was strongly felt, and is strongly missed. We would like to thank Mrs. Parsons for what she did for us and would like to say good-bye. We wish you the very best in your retirement. Bus Drivers From left to right: Mr. Larkin, Mrs. Adams, Mr. Mal- lery, Mrs. Mereness, Mr. Cross The time came last year to say good-bye to Mr. Harold Lappeus. For almost thirty years, Lap transported students here, there, and everywhere. He brought to us his humor and warm nature. In return, we say thank you and wish you the best in your retirement. Mr lapp us 12 In Memoriam . . . Mrs. Munz On March 28,1986, a strong sense of loss was felt by those who knew Mrs. Antoinette Munz. In school, Mrs. Munz was always busy, but never missed the chance to smile at those who passed by her door. Even though she was not directly involved with any particular class, Mrs. Munz was able to express her support for each. Out of school, she was always busy with volunteer work, another example of how much she cared fen our community and its people. Many of us are sorry we never got a chance to thank her for everything she did. We admire the contributions she made to our community. John Burr There is a time in everyone's life when all must end. Many times that moment comes much too soon. John Burr Jr. was taken away from us recently in an accident. As a friend, he always had a joke to tell. He told many stories and even when the punch line was not great he made you smile. In the com- munity, John was best known for the organization of those great tractor pulls. He was in charge of such events at Founder's Day. John had much to offer the world and he will be missed by all of us who knew him. Miss Dean- English Miss Peake- Music Mrs. Pendergrass- Language Arts Mrs. Cobb- Physical Education IF YOU COULD RETURN AFTER DEATH TO REPEAT ONE DAY IN YOUR LIFE, WHICH DAY WOULD IT BE? Mr. Holzer ... It would have to be the day that my daughter was born. Miss Bucciferro . . . One very cold night during an awful snowstorm my family and I were stranded at our grandparents house. The storm was so severe that we had no electricity and were forced to stay there overnight. This night stands out in my mind because we were forced to spend time together doing very simple things. We had no interuptions and were able to talk and really get to know each other. We all had been so caught up in our own lives that we had failed to spend many precious moments with each other. If I could re- turn to one day it would be the night of that awful snowstorm. Mrs. Barbie ... There is no question in my mind that there would be not one day I would repeat, but two, April 2, 1981 (the birth of my first son, William R. Barbie III) and May 20,1982 (the birth of my second son, Joshua C Barbie). Both of these days I would repeat in a minute! Mrs. Brueck . .. There are several days, but since I have to make a choice, I would say one particular day while Fred and I were in Africa on a safari. Since I can remember, I have always dreamed about going on a camera sa- fari in Africa and my dream came true. The day I would relive showed me the wildebeest in migration, a lioness on a hunt, giraffes loping across the Serengheti Plain, a pride of 15 lions,-all of what I wanted to see rolled into one day. There is no way that you can describe any of this to anyone; whether talking about it or seeing it on film or in slides. You had to be there! Someday Fred and I plan to return to “Out of Africa.”, Mrs. VanSchaick . . . The day my daughter, Nancy, was born because of the joy and pleasure she has given me throughout her life. Mr. Sanders . . . Today! Of all the days I ve known, I'd pick this day to live again. I hold nothing against days gone by-no regrets. All yesterdays with their grievings and pleasures, hold teachings and treasures that are neither irrelevant nor ever lost. But today- this day - unfolding along the leading edge of advancing time, will surely provide opportunities and answers beyond past possibilities. In life I want to learn all I can of how it all turns out. So, should I live until tomorrow, and should you ask me then, surely I would pick tomorrow to live again. nocear Standing: Mary Thatcher, Heidi Murphy, Maritza Saurin, Amy Schondra, Missy Hournauer, Michele Fletcher, Amanda Kling, Soren Manillen, Rose Krueger, Me- lanie VanHeertum, Denise Empie, Mrs. Cobb Kneeling: Clarissa Salisbury, Krista Hayner, Leah Osterhoudt, Lisa Nikolaus, Chris VanHeertum, Denise Stafford, Jen Kling, Faith Bollerman, Lynae Bowers, Shanon VanHeertum Coach: Mrs. Tracy Cobb Captains: Jen Kling Denise Stafford Chris VanHeertum Standing: Mr. Ordway, Terri Shearer, Scott VanArsdal, Danny Parsons, Heath Lynk, Vince Wright, Justin Bolster, Mike Bartlett, Eben Klemm, Dave Briant Middle standing: Brian Buczek, Darrin Skalski, Billy Smith Kneeling: Pete Towse, Matt Olsen, Shawn Desmond, Jim Shearer, Mike Desmond, Tom Ozden, Matt Vander- stad. First-Team League honors went to Denise Stafford, Chris VanHeer- tum and Heidi Murphy. Second Team honors went to Krista Hayner. Heidi Murphy was also selected as Section II, Class D Player of the Year. The Lady Spartan Basketball Team finished another great season this year. A total team effort, both physically and mentally, has been the basis for their terrific success. With only two League losses the Lady Spartans were able to capture second place. Spartan Captain Chris Van Heertum and Co-Captains Denise Stafford and Deb Boyle were the key to the intense team spirit needed to bring in the victories. Their leadership served as inspiration to all. Three of this year's Lady Spartans were chosen by the coaches in the league for the All-Star teams. Both Heidi Murphy and Deb Boyle achieved first team status while Chris Van Heertum captured a position on the second team. The four Seniors on the team, Denise Stafford, Lisa Roberts, Lisa Nikolaus and Terri Manchester, will be missed by the team as they look towards higher goals in the years to come. The entire team will also miss a great coach and a great friend. Coach Cobb stood by the team this season even though she is now teaching in Cobleskill. We thank Mrs. Tracy Cobb for all she has done and we wish her the best of luck. -.9 Softball Top: Miss Lauzon, Lynae Bowers, Deb Boyle, Judy Madden, Jen Kling Middle: Faith Bollerman, Soren Manillen, Missy Hournauer, Jeanne Brown, Heidi Murphy, David Hayner Bottom: Maritza Saurin, Amanda Kling, Kelly Herholz, Lisa Nikolaus, Jami Krueger Coach: Miss Sally Lauzon Captains: Kelly Herholz, Heidi Murphy sscs Opponent 15 Cobleskill 10 6 Schoharie 33 11 Berne-Knox 1 17 Middleburg 14 21 Greenville 11 19 Richmondville 18 6 Duanesburg 16 10 Greenville 9 3 Berne-Knox 43 5 Springfield 15 22 Schoharie 5 7 Middleburg 14 9 Richmondville 25 0 Duanesburg 30 SO Baseball Standing: Mr. Ron Vanderstad, Linda Hall, Julie Lynk, Terri Shearer, Bill Smith, Doug Wilder, Danny Parsons, Ed Quimby, Steve Kovac, Scott Van- Arsdale, Jim Boyle Kneeling: Tony Rorick, Dana Dostie, Daryl Bartlett Kevin Halsdorf, Rich Klinger Coaches: Mr. Ron Vanderstad Jim Boyle-first base coach Captains: Daryl Bartlett Rich Klinger Dana Dostie Kevin Halsdorf sscs Opponent 7 Schoharie 10 1 Berne-Knox 9 0 Middleburg 23 6 Greenville 1 2 Richmondville 8 4 Duanesburg 3 4 Greenville 11 7 Berne-Knox 8 3 Springfield 9 0 Schoharie 10 0 Middleburg 6 3 Richmondville 12 8 Duanesburg 13 51 overall record 2-11 BOY'S SOCCER Karen Lane, Pam Baxter GIRL'S SOCCER Kathy Pomella GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Terri Manchester SOFTBALL VARSITY SCORE Kelly Neale VARSITY STATISTICS j.v. Exchange Students We will miss you One of the greatest things that has ever happened to me in my life has been coming to Sharon Springs and having all of you as my friends. My heart is filled with sadness at leaving you and I wonder if I shall find such happiness again elsewhere. I did so many things I never had the chance to do before, such as playing soccer and softball, cheerleading and skiing. I leave here teachers 1 love so much, especially Miss Lauzon, Mrs. Cechnicki, Miss Schoff, and some of my best friends, like my sister, Jennifer, Chris Van Heertum, and Denise Stafford. I had so much fun in my classes with students and teachers, that I never will forget. I found here a family far better than I ever hoped for. The Klings were, are, and always will be my family. I had a WONDERFUL YEAR! I hope to see everyone again, soon. I want to say Thanks to the Klings, my dear Grandma Cou- sineau, the Vaccas and all my friends, and a special Thanks to the Sharon Springs Rotary Club. I love you, Maritza Alexandra Saurin Brasil '86 Welcome to SSCS Upon arriving in Sharon Springs in January I was faced with many new friends and new situatioins. I found my host family, the Osterhoudt's, to be wonderful and caring. They helped me feel right at home. The school here is different from mine in Australia, and the teachers have become my fiends. I would like to thank them for all of their help. I have also been able to enjoy many activities here. 1 have just started playing softball. I have also joined both Band and Chorus. I am taking flute and clarinet lessons. The skiing on Saturday's is also a lot of fun. I hope that the rest of my stay here is as pleasant as it is now. I have already made many friends. I would very much like to thank Mr. Vacca and the Rotary Club for everything they have done. Sudden attitude changes concerning clothes, grades, morals and puberty resulted in your grey hair and our bein' cool!” Double, double, toil and trouble, is definitely referring to 9th grade. We knew it all, we had it made . .. until initiation. Speaking of which, you never thanked those Juniors for the public torture and our humiliation. When we were sophomores, you were seeing psychiatrists daily, as driver's permits and Hey, can 1 use the car! were at the top of our lists. Materialism would be the destruction of America, thought O'Neill, but all along you knew it would be your 16 year old behind the wheel. Next, came the year of the Junior Prom, tuxedos, gowns, flowers, pictures, overdrawing the checkbooks and your spouse screaming, Your kid's a crook! To make up for the ulcers, bankruptcy, and all the rest, we studied really hard to pass those horrid Regents tests. Now, in our Senior year, we look to the past and realize, We have failed sometimes, taken wrong paths, paused for renewals; but we have never slipped back — never. Thanks to you we ll graduate with a sense of accomplishment to be treasured forever. But keep in mind the memories . . . In them may you experience a new quality in life. Learn to laugh at our little incidents after all, humor is the only thing that can keep you sane, right?! DENISE STAFFORD 80 1
