Text from Pages 1 - 88 of the 1985 volume:

Dedication Mrs. Harding The Seniors are pleased to announced that the 1985 CLARION is dedicated to Mrs. Dorothy Harding. We feel it is that extra effort she puts forth and her honest dedication to her profession which make her such a special teacher. Mrs. Harding was there when we had our first debuts in that box-office smash The Tortise and The Hare . We will always cherish those early years, especially the one made memorable by Mrs. Harding. We wish you happiness and thanks from the Class of 1985. 2 3 SHARON SPRINGS CENTRAL SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT MR. SMITH The class of 1985 leaves the Sharon Springs Central School at a time of unprecedented change in New York State's public education. The Regent's Action Plan and the Commissioner's Regulations will result in higher standards for all students. 1 am proud to be a part of a school system which requires more than the minimum re- quired by the current regulations. Your class will benefit from this experience, and you have enabled the Board and staff to further refine the program which will be offered to students in the future. Education is a never ending process. Take advantage of the higher education and vocational training opportu- nities to the best of your ability. The rate of change in the world is constantly increasing. You must make an effort to even maintain your present position in today's world. The Board of Education, staff, and administration extend their best wishes for success and happiness to the Class of 1985. 4 Mrs. Joan Baxter - Business Manager Board of Education Standing- Mr. Freeman Ashworth, Mrs. Bonitz Klemm, sitting- Mrs. Mary Jane Bianchine, Mr. Bill Munz, Mr. Paul Kling. 5 WELCOME to the detention room! Mars'-ill Exchange Students Hello, my name is Ricardo Castellanos Ruedo. 1 am an exchange student in Sharon Springs. I come from a city southwest of Mexico City called Guadalajara. I have had a lot of fun in all the sports in which I have participated, and in those that I have only been a spectator. I have also enjoyed the other activities I have been a part of in school. I would like to thank all the people who have helped me during the ten months I have been here, and especially the Sander's family who opened their home to me here. My name is Chris Washington. I am seventeen years old, and I am from Mexi- co. I was an exchange student at Sharon Springs Central School for one year, and I was part of the class of 1986. When I first came to Sharon Springs, it was very hard because of the different language, and new people. Thanks to my host parents and family, The (Roy) Van- Heertum's, and people like The Hayner's, The Lynk's, Mr. Vacca, and my new friends, I had a great year. 29 E 'im ’ ► '■tP' The Europe Club; top row: Carleen Roberts, Mike Desmond, Jim Boyle, Roy Hall, Krista Hayner, Tara Hayner, next, Mike Desmond, Jami Krueger, Jill VanHeer- tum, kneeling, Bruce Pomella, Tony Bianchine, Jim Shearer, Kathy Pomella, floor- Pam Baxter, absent from photo: David Parsons, Dan Parsons, Betty Farro, Kathy Hill. During the April Vacation, 18 S.S.C.S students had the oppor- tunity to experience the glories of Paris, the cosmopolitan atmo- sphere of Brussels, the charm of Amsterdam, the towns of the mighty River Rhine, and the re- freshing sparkle of Lucerne; all combined in an exciting five- country Study Tour arranged by Deborah Springhorn in coopera- tion with EF institute for cultural exchange. Some Highlights of our trip included: - 2 nights in Paris - A floating flower market in Amsterdam - Cologn's Gothic Cathedral - A cruise down the Rhine - A ride through the Black Forest - Cog railway ride up Mt. Pilatus - An evening of Swiss folklore and Fondue. Color Guard: kneeling- Amy Schondra, Karen Lane, Jackie Rullman, standing-Lynea Bowers, Jennifer Kling, Krista Hayner, Melanie VanHeertum, Kathy Pomella. The S.S.C.S. Color Guard has participated in vartious competitions this year. They took first place in the Class B class at Mount Pleasent. At the Sherbourne-Earlville show they placed third. They also competed in the Katie Corps Show at Morrisville Central School. We would like to congradulate them in their recent success. Doug Handy and Bruce Pomella building the skating pond for the S.S.C.S. students. With This Ring■ I Thee Wed On December 14th the Senior Home Economics held a mock wedding. The bride was Cindy Gartelman and the Groom was Mike Walther. Fred Winker was the best man, and Angela DiPace was the matron of honor. Bobbi Jo Webb performed the ceremo- ny. We wish the happy couple many years of joy. Being a part of this class is hard work. It's being part of a team. Having to accept responsibility. And finding out what responsibility means. We have a lot of enthusiasm, Confidence, and ability; We are leaders And a symbol of vitality. We contain a never ceasing interest. With determination and devotion, A strong will to help out others; Those who constitute our emotions. Being in the CLASS of 1987 is an honor An honor meant to share Regarded as a priceless gift To create spirit everywhere. We are people with high standards And honest character too. We learned to put differences aside To support ourselves and our school. But deeper than this„it's a feeling. A way of making friends Knowing that you're a leader. Giving where life begins- Sometime feeling tense or nervous Laughing yet striving to win. Accepting the disappointment of defeat But always willing to try again. Working for many hours We've had our misery and aches. Always wanting to improve. Realizing the work it takes. Showing others the joy of working together as one, Showing the importance of never giving up. Until the job is done. Being proud of the positions we hold, Nuturing all our dreams. Now facing a world full of opportunity. This is what the CLASS of 1987 means. Denise Stafford Activities Varsity Club Row 1- Coach Ordway, C. Dufresne, R. Klinker, L. Hall, T. Christmas Wish T'was the week before Christmas And all through the school Came whispers of the curious What's the total, break the rule. But Mrs. C. in her kitchen And Mr. Smith in his places Both said not a word, Just had grins on their faces. On a day in October Some 44 strong Raised 1,800 dollars By pedaling along. The raffle tickets Were sold here and there Fruit, Christmas ornaments And a doll with no hair. The bottles were stacked From the ceiling to floor And with every new day Came the cry of Not more? While down in the kitchen Our Marge and her crew. Cot set to serve Ham To a hundred or two. The pennies were collected for age and for weight. But some gave much more Their numbers not to relate. The coins added up The cans they did fill And they were all counted And wrapped with a will. Then came the last day Our efforts all tried We still had to wait And listen with pride. As Jim Lenard announced Sharon Springs, Number One In per student's contributions! We really had won! Christmas Wish is over. For another year. But kids can help kids That much we’ve clear. WCY gave the challenge We accept all right To help the sick children And make their eyes bright. (Peg Hotaling) 39 Booster Club Walt Manko, Tony DiPace, Harold Hall Jr. Band Front- M. Manchester, K.
