SMAKOfi SPK3MS eSJVZKAC semoc SMA RON MW VOKK CCA KJOJC ’84 vsdjcazjow It is with great pleasure that we, the Class of '84, dedicate the 1984 CLARION to you, Mr. Reddy. Your sense of humor and sincerity has grown to be a part of us all, a part which we will never forget. We were your first class and we hope we lived up to your expectations of what your first would be like (even though we don't like Jackson Browne). These four years with you have been great-great because you made them that way as a loyal teacher, advisor, coach and most of all, a friend. Good luck in the future. Thanks, with love. Class of '84 2 Superintendent MU. SMJZM SHARON SPRJNQS CSNZRAC SCHOOjC My best wishes for success are extended to the Class of 1984. Unfortunately, success requires more than just good wishes. Each person needs to learn to plan, to make wise choices, and to take responsibility for his or her life. We need to improve our ability to be self-directing and to have faith in our ability to do so. Time waits for no one is an appropriate theme. At no time in the past have time, action and decision-making come into play so critically. At no time in the future will it ever be less critical. 3 HOARD 03 SDUCAZJON M Bianchine, F. Ashworth, P. If I could exchange my teaching position for another career, I would be a professional actress, doing anything from television soap operas to dramatic roles to Broadway musicals. I think the theater is very exciting; it offers a chance to portray a variety of personalities. For a while you become a villain, a heroine, a witch, a saint, an ogre, a princess. Dance, another love of mine, gives me the chance to express through movement the music which is so much a part of my life. To combine dance and creative acting would be my ideal career.-Miss Peake I have (starting back in the dark ages, when I was a child) always wanted to be a teacher. Except for momentarily considering Library Science while attending college, I have never considered any other alternative. Unless I feel that God wants me to be at work elsewhere, I joyfully continue in the teaching profession.-Mrs. Harding I would have a difficult time choosing a different career because teaching children is truly my first love. However, in my fantasies, I dream of being a famous artist. Unfortunately, I'm not very good and I'd probably starve to death, but I do LOVE to paint.-Mrs. Pendergrass I think of the yearbook as primarily a student record and would prefer to minimize staff exposure.-Mr. Bader Lawyer-specializing in criminal law. This career would be extremely satisfying to me and hopefully finan- cially rewarding. Personally, I have greater admiration for men like Marvin Bell or F. Lee Bailey than the political, sports or entertainment greats. Using one's mind to the greatest capacity will enable one to achieve goals greater than by any other method.-Mr. Lane I would never change! I have always wanted to teach. Someday I'd like to be a full-time Mom and I'd like to be rich enough to do pottery full-time during summers-but change careers? NO WAY!!-Mrs. Touri If I had to choose another career it would be as an owner-operator of a Lakeside Inn, located on or near a golf course and cross country ski trails. There would be dinner-theatre on weekends, and various humanities and cultural workshops offered weekly. Why? To combine work and pleasure, of course! (With the possibility of starring in my own ballet!)-Mr. McClure If I could exchange my teaching career for another, I would want to be a columnist for the New York Times. The Tom Wickers and the James Restons of the world have an impact on public opinion which extends from the depths of grassroots complacency to the heights of administrative sanctimony. To have this potent an influence on the opinions of others, is to have made a lasting difference and to leave testimony reflective of desired change.-Ms. Springhorn MKS. eZHWQZOtf For thirty six and a half years, Vir- ginia Ethington soothed the aches and pains, comforted the cold and wet, filed accident reports, and checked the attendance for countless SHARON students. She conducted physicals for SHARON athletes and for those not so athletic. All the aspects of her role are too numerous to cite here except for the important point that she func- tioned as another spoke in the wheel of our Karma. With thanks for all she has done, the CLASS OF 1984 wishes Mrs. Ethington a hale and hearty re- tirement so that she now can pursue her own interests. 28 29 Cafeteria Staff: L. Bartlett, A. A special thank-you is given to Tom Slater. Many times his services were accepted as natural and then forgotten. His services to us were numerous, but special ones included getting our cots ready for nap- time to helping us with our prom. For the past two years, the Varsity Club's main goal has been to uplift the spirit of S.S.C.S. through the development of activities which surround interscholastic athletics. The events of Homecoming-the bonfire, pep rally, march, the coronation of the queen, and the Homecoming dance, which this year featured live music from Midnight Rider, are all spirited events coordinated by the Varsity Club. When doing fundraisers, the Varsity Club has also kept in mind the importance of school spirit. Spartan jackets, sweatshirts, football shirts, litter baskets, and linen calendars all have been offered in the flaming colors of purple and white. The club's membership has grown as there are approximately 40 members who have qualified by having one year of varsity sports experience. Officers of the club are Bob Klinker, Pres., Tom Jozifek, V.P., Suzanne Hayner, Sec., and Tina Manko, Treasurer. With the hope of continued support from our community and school, the Varsity Club's contribution to school spirit will continue to grow! Furthermore, the club's future apsirations, besides sponsoring Homecoming annually, is to also fund field trips to college or professional sporting events! 37 MOOSZSK CjCIW Officers: Pres Tony DiPace V Pres Harold Hall Treas Walt Manko Row 1: W. Using money earned form dances, bake sales, concession sales and the community play, Hokum , (not to mention donations!?!?), they have provided us with special trophies and flowers for the Seniors and a special cheerleading award to be presented at graduation. They provided refs for the Jr. High soccer teams this year. The club also plans to put on the annual sports banquet for the athletes. As has been obvious to all this year, the Booster Club made our winning season even nicer by purchasing both new skirts for the cheerleaders and also those super warm up suits and new uniforms for the guys. All the athletes here at Sharon would like to thank the Booster Club for all that they have done. We deeply appreciate your hard work and everlasting concern for us. Con- gratulations, Lorraine!!! My name is Fumiya Tsuchiya. I am from Japan. Japan is a small country that lays at the eastern part of Asia. I speak Japanese. My school is only for girls. There are 1200 stu- dents in 10th grade through 12th. We have to wear school uniforms for school. My school has lots of rules and we don't like most of them. I play ping- pong in Japan. I belong to the broadcast club. I came to America because I wanted to see new people. I have met many new friends. I stay with the Burr family. My favorite American food is hot dogs. I am enjoying my stay here is America. I would like to thank my friends and the helpful people I have met and the Burrs and my parents. Wayne Larkin and Stephanie Putnam were chosen by the faculty as Sharon Springs Teen- agers of the Year. The selection was made based on character, service to school and com- munity, scholarship and over all attitude. Wayne continued to go on to win the county wide Teenager of the Year. Congratulations Wayne and Steph!! These students were chosen on their musical ability, experience and over all respnonsibility. Regents Scholarship Winners Sharon Springs Central is proud of Susan Mallery, Kenyon Parsons, Jean Burr and Jim Cooper who have won Regents scholarships. The selection of these winners was based on the SAT and the ACT scores of tests taken prior to November of 1983. They each will receive an award of $250. Congratulations!!! Top notch performances by Jean Burr as Julie Jordan and Roland Tyler as Billy Bigelow were enjoyed in the 1983 perfor- mance of CAROUSEL. In the story, Billy, a carnival barker for the carousel, falls in love with Julie, a local mill girl. Billy is unable to find a decent job to support his wife and new child and in desperation, allows Jigger to talk him into a scheme to steal money. Billy is caught in the act and kills himself. His daughter grows up haunted by the fact that her father was a crook, until Bill s ghost convinces her that she can find happiness within herself, desipe of what her father was. Memorable performances were given by Jami Krueger, Tom Jozifec, Kathy Hill, Tony DiPace and Suzanne Hayner. 44 soeesn Row 1: B. Farro, L. Stafford, J. Burr, K. Hill Row 2: J. Burr, J. Krueger, L. Basketball team, known to all as The Horde, posted a 6-11 record overall. The Horde, hampered by youth and inexperience, was still able to play some pretty impressive hoop. Who will ever forget Rich Klinker's clutch free throws and Vince Wright's bucket, with 3 seconds left to defeat Duanesburg? Or, The Hustling Horde charging back from a 12 point deficit at half time to defeat Milford and take second place at the Christmas Tournament? The Spartans began with high expectations and displayed their strength early as they won The Cherry Valley Christmas Tournament back in December, when Wayne Larkin received M.V.P. honors and Todd Ethington made All-Tourney team status. Wayne, Todd, Bob, and Tim also all joined together in hitting the double figure (points per game) cate- gory this year. To top it all off, the Spartans gained honorable mention status in the N.Y.S. Small School Writer's Pool. Although county All-Stars have not yet been chosen, it is certain that the entire starting 5 will be heavily considered for this honor. Finishing at 16-2, the future Spartans can only aim higher for the '84-'85 season. Congratulations Spartans!!! 53 QJKCS VARSJZy XASKSZKAJCC Row 1: C. Wlasiuk, Captain S. Putnam, T. Bishop, Manager K.
