ffjfct. V CLARION — 7 957 ALMA MATER Dear schoolmates ever loyal, true and faithful. Gathering 'neath the Maples on the hill. With courage, faith, undaunted for our future - As we older grow, we love thee, still. The Purple and the White shall wave forever. Keep this emblem ever clean and bright. Oh may the glorious folds be sullied never - Love for aye the Purple and the White. All hail to thee our dear old Sharon, Open wide your portals to the right - Still o'er the field of conflict ever waving. Float for aye the Purple and the White. SHARON SPRINGS CENTRAL SCHOOL SHARON , NEW YORK OUR THEME The Business of Sharon Springs One of the first motels built in Sharon One of the newer hotels in Sharon DEDICATION This is our tribute to our advisor, Mr. Harrie K. Washburn. We all realize now, what a chore you have had. In our first high school year, you had to lead us into performing our tasks about school and in our class actions. Now, in our last year you have had to lay a restraining hand on our temptations and wild ideas. We have been a class that has always wanted to try something different. This characteristic, no doubt, has probably been a trial for you, but nevertheless you helped us with mind and body. We are deeply gratified for all the times you have shown us the light, and for your ever present smile and cheerful word. As we step onto the threshold of life your influence upon us and our ideals will manifest itself. Thank you for all you’ve done and may your future be richly rewarded. It is with sincere congratulations and best wishes that we note the approach of your graduation from the Sharon Springs Central School. The intelligent uses of the knowledge and wisdom you have gained during your high school career are the cornerstones upon which society expects you to contribute to the progress and welfare of our nation. It is our hope that your years at the Sharon Springs Central School have strengthened and improved the quality of your citizenship, for upon the character of your citizenship is based the effectiveness and success of our democracy. As you climb life's ladder of success we sincerely hope that your achievements will bring happiness and satisfaction to your families and to your associates. 7 1L BOARD OF EDUCATION First row, left to right: Avery De Luca, Principal; Pauline Vrooman, Clerk; Alvin Lane, President. HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1957 FRESHMAN YEAR - 1953-1954 High School, at last! We felt very triumphant to think that we could finally say we were in high school. But we found out that being Freshmen wasn't going to be all fun. We knew that we had to get down to work and keep our marks up. Our first activity this year was, of course. Freshman Initiation when Anthony's speech at Caesar's funeral was changed by us quite a bit. Next we had the Freshman Return Party for the Juniors, a roller-skating party. The next activity was the Freshman Dance. Officers at our class meetings were: President - -- -- -- -- -- LOIS SCHILDE Vice President....................RAYMOND BANULS Secretary - -- -- -- -- EMIKO FUKUMOTO Treasurer...........................MARILYN LOWE The year passed very quickly and when the door closed behind us in June we felt that we had stored away all the knowledge needed to begin our Sophomore year. SOPHOMORE YEAR 1954-1955 After being told that Sophomore means wise fool” we brushed the cobwebs off our minds and settled down to work. We had two money-making activities this year. First a dance and then a roller skating party. We decided on and planned these activities at class meetings conducted by the following officers: President.......................FLOYD COLLINS Vice President - -- -- -- -- SANDRA LANE Secretary - -- -- -- - EMIKO FUKUMOTO Treasurer - -- -- -- -- - BARBARA SMITH Our Sophomore year was a very pleasant one but the succeeding years proved even more so. JUNIOR YEAR 1955-1956 We raised our heads a bit in keeping with our new found dignity and began our Junior year. We had many activities this year, record dances, paper drives, bake sales, a Junior Play, a fun fair, and a roller skating party. We sold candy, sweat shirts, crew hats, cards and writing paper. We had great fun initiating the Freshmen and attending the Freshman Return Party. The day school opened we elected as our officers for the year: President..............................FLOYD COLLINS Vice President- - -- -- -- - -JUDY COLLINS Secretary - -- -- -- -- -- -LOIS SCHILDE Treasurer......................EMIKO FUKUMOTO JUNIOR YEAR 1955-1956 (continued) In February Floyd Collins left our class and Judy Collins took over the job of President. As we departed for two month’s vacation we talked about the privileges that would be ours in the coming year as Seniors. But, tucked in the back of the head of each was the realization that it would be our last year at S. S.C.S. and at the end we might not be so eager to leave. Seniors! At last we occupied the seat of honor. Impressed on the mind of each was the firm purpose of making the most of our last year. On the first day of our Senior year we elected our last officers. Since we could only have activities during the first semester we immediately set to work planning these activities. We had paper drives, bake sales, a supper, a movie, a record dance, and, in cooperation with the Juniors, a Junior-Senior Prom. We also sold candy, cards, and magazine subscriptions. When we make our Senior trip in June we will remember all the people who made it possible. If it hadn’t been for the help of the community our activities could not have succeeded. We must also express our thanks and appreciation to our advisors over the past four years: Miss Baldion, Mrs. DeBatiste, Miss Stern, and our advisor since 1952, Mr. Washburn. As we prepare now for graduation the question asked one Senior by another is, What are you planning to do after June? Some of us will go on to college, others will join the armed services, and still others will get married. But we will all remember and have a place in our hearts for our Alma Mater, Sharon Springs Central School.
