Volume LXV 1976 - 1977 1 Ww. 6 Friendship Friendship 7 mendsmp is being unique in character and having a good time. Its being able to tell your friends your problems and know they'll help in any way they can. A friend is there when you need a helping hand. A close friendship is an invaluable experience in Stage Band, Majorettes, And Flag Girls When attending a sports event at Sharon High, one can see the additional flair added to the game by the stage band, majorettes, and flag girls. The stage band with its modern jazz and rock livens the atmosphere. Furthermore, the routines and drills performed by the flag girls and majorettes make up a very interesting halftime. The many hours of practice and rehearsal really pay off during the final performance. ABOVE: Stage Band: Row I: Bob Dills, Sherry Sprow, Dawn Bennett. Bleacher Bums 27 Science Club And Greenhouse Gang 28 Science Club and Greehnouse Gang Future Teachers The girls in the Future Teachers organization, under the direction of Mr. Mershimer, travel to elementary schools to gain experience that will aid them in their future teaching careers. This, along with the actual tutoring of students, helps them understand what teaching is all about. The Science Club spent the whole year promoting fund raising projects in order to go to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. Successful bake sales and candy bar sales helped to rid students of the after school hungries. The sale of raffle tickets also contributed much to the fund. Talking to plants is not the only skill the Greehouse Gang learns while tending to the plants in the greenhouse. Along with their instructor, these students learn the proper tender loving care needed to grow healthier plants. After the dreary winter, ailing plants are brought from home to the greenhouse to have a chance to perk up. Also, opportunities to grow new and exotic plants are provided. Hi-Y 43 Student Council 44 Student Council Notes On Notes Notes ' originally called Calamus ' had its name changed several times through the years. After Calamus came Notes From a Zoo, Notes on the Wall to simply Notes. This year, since Notes published only poetry and illustrative art work, the name was once again changed to Potpourri. The little magazine is composed of creative writing and art combinations. The cover design, writings, illustrations, typing, layouts, and printing are done by the students themselves during their free time. The English advisor is Mrs. Lingner, art advisor is Mrs. Mangus, and the graphics advisor is Mr. Kaiser. The Student Council remains a very active organization in the school this year. At very serious and well-organized meetings, the members of student council discuss important topics concerning the school and student body. Two of the outcomes of these discussions are a garbage can was placed in front of the school in order to help prevent the littering in the school yard, and the donation of $50 to the Greenhouse Gang to buy the shrubbery that is now planted outside the front entrance of the school. Another function of the Student Council Members, is to visit various schools and observe how they are run. Finally, the Annual Sweetheart Ball was sponsored by Student Council. Irene Astonishes All 52 Irene This year's all-class musical, Irene, proved to be a tremendous success due to the long hours of practice. Each night, laFge crowds entered our auditorium to witness a fine evening of entertainment, which resulted in standing ovations. Besides dialogue, colorful costumes along with songs, dances, and a few acrobatics combined to produce an enjoyable play. The cast of characters included Irene O'Dare, portrayed by Leslie Ulrich, a piano tuner who became a high society, Fifth Avenue woman overnight. John Carly portrayed Donald S. Marshall III, a high society businessman who falls in love with Irene. Frank Pierce did a fine job playing the part of Madame Lucie, who added humor and color to the play. Madame Lucie was a newcomer to the world of design. Justine Borawski displayed the personality of a typical old-fashioned Irish mother. Laura Durham was Mrs. Marshall, the mother of Donald, who spent her time trying to find the perfect mate for Donald. Kelly Lemos and Carole Dyll played the characters of Helen Burke and Jane McFudd, friends of Irene. Ken Zippay was the character of Ozzie Babson. He, along with Helen, Jane, and Madame Lucie added laughter to the play as they were Getting Away With It; that is, trying to fool others into believing Jane and Helen were high society ladies, while Irene was the Contessa from Monte Carlo. All those who attended the play witnessed a fine job of acting and cooperation of all those involved in the production. We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere feelings of gratitude to Mr. Bruce Kaiser, our advisor. We have come to deeply value the friendship that has grown from this working experience. No amount of words could ever show our thanks for his continuous guidance, leadership, and assistance in making this yearbook a success. We also would like to say Thank You to our staff. They all spent alot of their own free time in working on this book. We really do appreciate all their efforts to make this the best yearbook Sharon High has seen in quite a long time! Magirl, Our Walsworth Representative Yearbook Staff 199 out and designing are all essential parts of the process. A photographer can easily spend hours, getting a print just right. The Layout Staff can spend weeks looking through photos and cropping prints before they find just what they are looking for. The Editors can spend days trying to find the staff which always seems to disappear around deadlines. The Business Manager spends his life pleading with people to order the yearbook and pay for it. He works with the staff which tries to get as much as possible in the book for the money they have, fights with the auditor who wants to know where it all went, and the bank which tells him he never had it in the first place. All in all, it is an exciting business with just enough crises to keep the staff coming back for more. So there you have it —not a prestigious as Who's Who in Physics, as funny as Mad Magazine, as news-worthy as the basketball teams, or as well-known as McDonalds, but somehow trying to capture a little of all these things and more. You can not get a whole year into one book, particularly in a school such as this. You are doomed to fail before you start. But you can do something, and you can hope that what you do will succeed at least partially in recording the year as it was. There is satisfaction in creating a yearbook. Where it comes from is hard to say, but it is there and it is the reason why year after year a group of people decides that another book ought to be published. It is difficult to figure out why you bought this book—maybe your parents did, or you just wanted to have a picture of yourself or your friends. But whatever the reason, we're glad you bought it. It means that we could share in the experience of recording another school year, and for this we thank you. Mirror Staff '77 If you are the kind of person who wonders why you bought this book or why you are spending the time to read it, you might be interested in knowing what motivates people to create it in the first place. Recognition, power, popularity, and money are not the answers since none of them is particularly plentiful in 113. Neither are fun and games, good night sleeps, or fancy fringe benefits. In fact, it is rather difficult to explain on a rational basis why these few people are intent on subjecting themselves to the hundreds of hours of work involved in making a yearbook and the inevitable shower of discontent which follows their efforts at distribution time. A great deal of the motivation comes from the creation itself. Yearbooks are a part of our culture and part of our attitudes toward life. There is a nostalgic side to most of us which makes us want to remember things. Years after the magazines and newspapers have been recycled, the yearbook remains, probably hidden under a pile of junk, but nevertheless there. Every once in a while—perhaps during spring cleaning or moving—you stumble across it, and for a few minutes you look through it and try to remember old names, faces, buildings, and experiences. Then back into the pile it goes, to be rediscovered another time. Yet there is more to it than that. Yearbooks are a remnant of tradition—amateurish attempts to document the history of a year while the impact of events is still with us. Time passes rapidly, and even the most intense experiences are quickly deadened by the new and immediate. Somehow the yearbook seems to keep things in a little better perspective. Its memory is perhaps a little clearer. But before you get the idea that the yearbook is created by a bunch of teary-eyed sentimentalists, consider what goes in to this business of documenting a high school experience. Thousands of photographs, hours of writing and typing, cropping and editing, laying
