Would you please send them a transcript of my credits?” This, and many other requests interrupt the secretaries of Sharon High every day. At times, they find it difficult to type letters, keep the attendance cards, find substitutes for teachers, and collect money for the various tests with these constant interruptions. A new secretary, Mrs. Rose Jazwinski, says that she does a “numerous amount of things” in the office and students find that she’s always ready to lend a helping hand. The work of Mrs. King, Mrs. Hodge, and Mrs. Jazwinski varies, yet they always manage to answer all of the auestions and still get their required work done. GUIDANCE 17 ■Dinerse Curriculum Cnljances CnpliBlj Department The new English curriculum enables students to choose those subjects which interest them and will aid them in the future. Due to the nine-week grading periods, many of the mini-courses have been combined, adding a larger spectrum of interest to each course offering. Although every student is scheduled for composition, this course has also been modernized to include literary readings in conjunction with the instruction of writing skills. BELOW Mrs. Fabian offers individual aid to her English students. OPPOSITE PAGE LEFT: Senior students demonstrate various classroom study habits. Mr. David Cornell Mrs. Leah Maselli 18 ENGLISH Mrs. Elaine Ulrich Mr William Facko ENGLISH 19 Although the freshmen and sophomores are not given a choice of English mini-courses, their program has been altered to include more areas of study. Freshman English is concentrated mostly on an introduction to varied types of literature — classical as well as modern. The sophomore curriculum demands more independent work on the part of the student. Its prime goal is to master the student s skills in the basic fundamentals of English. The library contains a great variety of literature ranging from classical to modern works. It also houses a five-year backlog of periodicals and boasts a fine research area. Here, students develop their talents, improve their skills, and express themselves through unique art work. Nevertheless, this can only be possible through diligent practice in pencil sketching, designs, and painting. Inspired young artists put these skills in oils, watercolor, macrame, or batik. This year was marked by a worthwhile event. Art IV students met at Mrs. Mangus’ barn and concentrated three days on intensive water-color study which was followed by a critique. However, the Tigers made a name for themselves in post-season play with victories over North Allegheny, Penn Hills, and a stunning upset victory over Johnstown. Coach Alex Chrobak’s Cagers, the favorites to win the W.P.I.A.L. championship, lost out to a surprising General Braddock team. Undaunted, the Tigers went on to smash previously undefeated Johnstown 77-41. Even though the Tigers did not make it to state, they took the Section III championship for the first time in fifteen years RIGHT: Mayor Basil Scott presents Fran Presley with a plaque proclaiming March 16. 1973. as Fran Presley Day . Coach Don Thomas smiles proudly because for the first time a Sharon wrestler took the W.P.I.A.L. championship. Fran also made W.P.I.A.L. history by pinning all three of his opponents in the tournament. Mr. Robert Rosati once again demonstrated his directing abilities with the production of My Fair Lady . In the starring roles were Debbie Rapp as Eliza Doolittle. Paul Marinko as Henry Higgins, Mark Sherwood as Alfred Doolittle, and Bill Bicek as Colonel Pickering. Many groups of students worked behind the scenes, painting and constructing sets, working the lights and sound, and making-up the actors. Other students were involved in ushering, tickets, and production. My Fair Lady truly showed that perfection is possible among high school students.
