SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS Free education really isn't free. It costs money—tax-raised money—to have free public schools. Educating all our children rests on a firmer foundation than a fantastic dream. In taking stock of our schools consideration is given to their strength and to come of the improvements necessary to make it possible to meet the opportunities and responsibilities of schools today. The processes of education are slow and progress may actually be impeded when attempted at too fast a rate. The cost of education is an investment in people. Returns on the investment are to the individual citizen and appear on the balance sheet in terms of literacy, ability to think, personal and social adjustment, and ability to accept responsibilities and duties required in a democracy. C. M. MUSSER PRINCIPAL OF THE HIGH SCHOOL No man ever amounted to anything in the world unless he began with a firm belief in himself. We need an intensive campaign for more faith by our people in themselves, in the United States, and in the free enterprise system which has made this country great. Even the Almighty can do nothing for a people who have no faith. S. N. CURRIER ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL OF THE HIGH SCHOOL One of the ways that a community may judge a school is by the conduct and attitude of those who seek its education. What we do individually may be our own business, but when our acts reflect on those who are associated with us, it becomes other people's business. The pupil who doesn't live up to the ideals of his school should seriously question his attitudes. 9 A. P. WILDMAN
