Bishop Solicitor...............................C. E. Brockway Superintendent of Schools...........................C. M. Musser Members of the Board _______________ Edward R. Sloss, Henry D. Johns, Oliver W. Beach, Basil Scott The Sharon School Board is the governing body of the Sharon School District. They are in charge of employment of school personnel and budgeting of all school funds. The Board consists of seven men elected by the voters of the school district to serve for terms of either two or six years. Any member is eligible for re-election unless it is against his better wishes. Mr. C. M. Musser, Superintendent of Schools, acts as educational adviser to the Board. $ SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS Free education really isn't free. It costs money—tax-raised money—to have free public schools. Educating all our children rests on a firmer foundation than a fantastic dream. In taking stock of our schools consideration is given to their strength and to come of the improvements necessary to make it possible to meet the opportunities and responsibilities of schools today. The processes of education are slow and progress may actually be impeded when attempted at too fast a rate. The cost of education is an investment in people. Returns on the investment are to the individual citizen and appear on the balance sheet in terms of literacy, ability to think, personal and social adjustment, and ability to accept responsibilities and duties required in a democracy. C. M. MUSSER PRINCIPAL OF THE HIGH SCHOOL No man ever amounted to anything in the world unless he began with a firm belief in himself. We need an intensive campaign for more faith by our people in themselves, in the United States, and in the free enterprise system which has made this country great. Even the Almighty can do nothing for a people who have no faith. S. N. CURRIER ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL OF THE HIGH SCHOOL One of the ways that a community may judge a school is by the conduct and attitude of those who seek its education. What we do individually may be our own business, but when our acts reflect on those who are associated with us, it becomes other people's business. The pupil who doesn't live up to the ideals of his school should seriously question his attitudes. 9 A. P. WILDMAN ISABEL ARMOUR History JANE BROSIE History MARY C. BENBOW Nurse PETER J. The flimsy cars rock to and fro Waiting impatiently to go. Fear mounts—train ascends— Curdling shouts—we round a bend! Of this voyage every part Makes a groove upon our hearts. Higher, higher still we zoom, Even more the terror looms. We wonder as we mount the crest, Are we bewildered as the rest? Breathless with anxiety, Gazing heavenward, we feel, As the celestial clouds recede. The encouraging rays we desperately need. 'Neath the load the cars do pause. A glimpse of the future we see with awe. High abreast the utmost peak, Only God's will we aim to seek. Ahead of us the fairgrounds lie. Balloons and banners are flying high. Crowds swarm, drifting here and there, Gaiety appearing everywhere. But what is restless within the soul? A world reeking corruption and mold. Quickly, too quickly, the platform draws nigh. Though slightly shaken, our spirits are high. Where to next? Will we find the clue? To right the world—THIS—we must do. MONITORS' CODE OF BEHAVIOR I will remember that my behavior reflects the attitude of Sharon High School and that the school is judged by the impression I create. I will take charge of the halls in the vicinity of my post as monitor and will be responsible for the behavior of the pupils in this area. I will visit the lavatory nearest my post immediately after I go on duty and at any other time when it is necessary and will report any condition that is not as it should be. I will talk to no one when on duty except in case of necessity. I will not allow an outsider to go around the halls except when I am sure they have received this privilege from the office or are accompanied by some member of the school. I will rise when speaking with any adult or any woman. I will remain at my post until the monitor who follows me reports for duty. I will stand during change of classes. I will see that pupils use the proper stairs. If at any time I feel I cannot fulfill my obligation to the school, I will resign my position rather than violate a trust. I will report to the office any condition which I am not capable of handling. If on duty on the first floor, I will allow no one to leave the building without proper authority. I will enforce and abide by the Permit Rules. I will try to be worthy of the trust placed in me and I will not forget that I am responsible to the school to do my best. 71 72 ORCHESTRA President---------------------------------------------- Richard Seamen Vice President___________________________________________________________Joe Voytko Secretary---------------------------------------------------------------Ruth Cooper Treasurer ------------------------------------------------------------ Anita Alfred Social Chairman --------------------------------------------- Jeanne Maxwell Librarian---------------------------------------------------Marilyn Schell Director-------------------------------------------- Mr. Frederick Swingle We have all enjoyed hearing the Sharon High Orchestra. We have heard them not only at assemblies and concerts, but also many times broadcasting over the radio. The members of the orchestra not only learn to play for their own and our personal enjoyment, but have learned to appreciate good music, and have been capable of transmitting some of their learning to us. We are justifiably proud of our orchestra. K. Paxton We are indebted to the Photography Staff for a picture record of our school activities. Handicapped last year because of repairs being made on their dark room, the boys appreciate their nice facilities and are looking forward to an expanded program next year. QUILL AND SCROLL Sharon High School's chapter of Quill and Scroll, named after columnist Drew Pearson, is one of an International Honorary Society sponsored by Northwestern University. Only high school juniors and seniors can become members, after having 150 inches of published material in High School publications, and after doing outstanding work on this publication. To be eligible for membership in Quill and Scroll one must also have the recommendation of three teachers. Miss Anna Grace Smith is the local adviser. 74 Hou,' Ih trodvccvJ RALLIES AND ASSEMBLIES The first big rally of the year was the Bonfire Rally on November 9 in preparation for the Farrell football game. President Brautigam led the Snake Dance and cheers at Herald Square. Then on January 22 the girls in the Senior Tri-Hi-Y presented a skit picturing an old-fashioned school, complete with spelling bee and dunce chair. This was to pep up the student body and team before the basketball game with Farrell. The Senior Rally, the last one by and for Seniors, was held on February 20, just before the last home basketball game. Mr. Wabash was the speaker. The assemblies, many of which are financed by the Sharon High Athletic Association, were designed to instruct and to entertain. Among these were several musical groups, an electrical expert, and a presentation of the techniques of ju jitsu. And usually an assembly in keeping with the spirit of the occasion was sponsored by some high school group around each holiday season. Probably the outstanding assembly of the year was that one at which the Reverend William Alexander addressed the student body concerning what is required to make a good and worthwhile life. Altogether, the Rallies and Assemblies this year were very acceptable. During the year the members made several field trips through valley industries, heard talks given by local scientists, and saw movies dealing with science. All members are required to be currently taking a science and to have at least a three average. SECRETARIES The student secretaries and the school officials whom they help are subjected to a mutual gain. While obtaining experience and self-confidence in their duties, such as taking shorthand, interviewing, typing, answering the telephone, filing records, and writing letters, these secretaries help the offices of Sharon High to function efficiently. SENIOR PLAY This year's Senior play, Cheaper by the Dozen, is a light comedy dramatized from the book by Frank B. Gilbreth, Jr., and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey. It is built around Father's trials and tribulations with his dozen children. Mother is highly commended by Father for raising this above-average family which is his pride and joy. The play is kept moving as Father, an efficiency expert, would keep his family on the run—a stop watch forever being used to conserve precious time. Miss Elizabeth McMullen directed the play. Faye Ellen Welch was her student assistant. Playing their games as preliminaries to the varsity games, these boys put on an exhibition that often rivaled and sometimes surpassed the 'main attraction' in thrills and excitement. Many of these players will be counted on to fill the gaps left in the Senior Varsity line-up by the graduating seniors. With their ability they could be the team that Sharon has been waiting for. Qd'iebcM, 1950 The 1950 Baseball team finished their regular season of play with a record of one victory and seven defeats. Bud Laycock, in his second year as baseball coach, produced an eager but somewhat inexperienced squad. Home games were played on the Westinghouse Recreation field. Our boys played a much better brand of baseball than their record would indicate. The usual starting line-up was: E. Musser, C., J. Agosti, 1st B„ J. Lucas, 2nd B., T. Marcella, SS., W. Schultz, 3rd B., B. Dillon LF., J. King, CF., and E. Walker, RF. Starting pitchers were Lou Cooper and Jack Harmon. 90 Qolj 950 The 1950 Golf Team, playing in W.P.I.A.L. competition and under the coaching of Mr. Peter Collodi, ended a successful season with six victories and only two defeats. The first team consisted of Captain Bob Savko, Bart Ogden, Ed Sobash, Ronnie Benedict and Ed Walsh. The second team of Bill Walsh, Jim Vargo, Art Goldstone, Sam Lurie, and George Ristvey competed with other Junior Varsity squads in this area. 7 00 1950 The Track team, coached by Cy James and his assistants, AT' Barnes and Kenny Reeher, in its second year of competition finished with a record of three wins and two losses. The boys put in many hours of hard practice and benefited not only by the physical exercise but also by the training in fair play and athletic skill which this sport affords. Toward the end of the season Sharon, Ursaline, and Youngstown North participated in a triangular meet, and Sharon won by a score of 58! 2. Still in its infancy, the Track team has promise of a bright future. 91 GUeeSileaAesi . Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! . . . Whether our team wins or loses, the loyal student body, led by this group, cheers them on. Under the supervision of Miss Dorothy Weller, our cheer leaders were really hot!
