Bieber (retired) Johns, O. W. Beach Much of the success of the American school system can be attributed to the good management of School Boards. The members of the Sharon Board of Education are elected by the townspeople to serve for terms of either two or six years, and may come up for re-election as many times as they desire. Our Board is comprised of seven members who hold their meetings monthly in the office of the Superintendent of Schools. At their meetings they arrange for the collection of tax money to finance the budget, plan for future improvement of the school system, budget all funds, and employ the school personnel. During the past year the local Board has spent many additional hours, in and out of meetings, executing plans for the three hundred and fifty thousand dollar educational improvement and expansion program now in the process of completion. 6 SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS As parents and teachers, prerent or potential, we have come more and more to realize how great must be our individual concern with the development and adjustment of these our children. And this development and adjustment, we now see, must be physical, mental, and emotional in even measures. The individual child is indeed a whole child living in a particular time and place and having to learn how to get along with other individuals. C. M. MUSSER PRINCIPAL OF THE HIGH SCHOOL There is nothing so precious in the world as our freedom. Where else can we think as we please, select the kind of occupation we desire, and work and worship where we choose? How anyone can dare to work against a republic form of government that offers such privileges is very difficult to understand. No form of government is perfect, but that one is best that provides the greatest opportunity for each of us to develop all his God-given faculties. Let us strive to preserve in the United States of America those blessings which make for happy, self-respecting, liberty-loving human beings. S. N. CURRIER ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL OF THE HIGH SCHOOL Education to be complete and sufficient must inspire the student with a sense of personal responsibility so to live that he shall, by act and by word, instill and enforce in the hearts, the minds, and the consciences of men, those eternal truths of human life without which civilization itself will perish:—to worship our common God, to maintain civic and personal morality, to succeed with our neighbors, and to govern our conduct accordingly. Some of us wished they would always last, But like it or not we're out on our own We've finished the carefree school days we've known. Ahead of us lies the shadowy future, The question now is How shall we meet her? Will the lessons we've learned be lost and forgotten? Or shall we go on and try to apply them? All of us must have a goal to attain And also a certain standard maintain. As those who graduated fifty years ago We, also, life by experience will know. There will be doctors, mechanics and lawyers, Nurses, secretaries, technicians, and homemakers. Each one must find a niche for himself And realize that knowledge is his greatest wealth. There will be new interests, friends and faces And new measures by which to set our paces. New friends may come and old ones go, But we ourselves, seeds of success must sow. Our theme for this half century year should be As has been said For prosperity, there's unity. Let's try and remember our Senior Class motto: As we lead, the world will follow. —Jean Slagle wf Liy PMYL honhie HQTROO HAL PH BARS NORM WHY OUNJA MOTT THAN MEHM NANC T£00 CHAMP JOAN IE BAY SPUTTY RED BARS r - MICKEY 38 39 U+na Motesi Hail, all hail, to Sharon High School Bright the torch for thee we bear May it burn as bright forever As its glorious light we share. But after warm-up time the Sharon High Band really practiced — and proved that practice makes perfect. Although it was a small band of only about sixty pieces, they proved that quality and not quantity counts most. They were kept busy as they played for all school games, concerts, football rallies and parades. Yes, the members really earned their letters, but did it cheerfully under the capable leadership of Tiny. This group, under the baton of Mr. William Blough, now meets every day of the week as a full-time academic subject. If we stopped to listen, we would occasionally hear a round of laughter and applause, which goes to show that the members of the Choir must enjoy their work. And whenever we entered the auditorium to hear a concert, we realized how hard they must have worked to produce such pleasing music. We'll always remember how they thrilled us at our school assemblies, our concerts and our broadcasts. Tryouts were held early in October, and its members were chosen. Although the system of officers was the same as in the other musical organizations, it was different in being strictly an extra curricular activity, meeting two activity periods a week. Organized similar to a club, its purpose was to provide the enjoyment of group singing to its members. This group made their initial appearance at the annual Christmas concert, where they capably showed us their talents and the fruits of three months of hard work. These were members of the fire squad taking their assigned posts at the various exits to see that the student body left the building in a safe, orderly manner. Their duties also included making sure the windows and doors were closed and everything as far as possible was left in good order at the close of a fire drill. Let's congratulate the members for an accident-free year. This year, beside publishing its twelve regular issues, the Gazette and Mirror have joined forces to put out a literary supplement twice a year. Another interesting project the members have is the sending of gifts to the children of a family in France. LIBRARIANS In line with the school's efforts to provide more opportunities for extracurricular activity for students, a new club was formed this year under the title of Librarians. Fifteen girls volunteered their services to the library in order that they might learn more about the functions of a library and the duties of a librarian. They helped out at the librarian's desk, signed out books, arranged the shelves of books, provided helpful information to students, and collected fines. With their adviser, Miss Grace McClenahan, leading the way, the girls have done a splendid job this year. 67 MONITORS 68 MONITORS Captain of Captains........... -.... -......... In order to do this they are divided into ten groups: One to serve before school and one group each to serve during each class period. They help to enforce permit rules among the student body, and seek to obey all the rules of the Monitors' Code of Behavior. Pictures of the Monitors appear on the opposite page. MONITORS—HEALTH ROOM The Monitors who serve in the Health Room are selected and governed by the same general principles as those serving on the regular Monitor squads. These girls receive valuable experience in caring for the sick and executing office routine. Together they learned to appreciate good music, and to feel that they too were capable of creating a little feeling and emotion in music. Sharon High is proud of the fine work done by this group this year. PHOTOGRAPHY STAFF Manager ------------------------_________-------------- Dick Brautigam Members----------------------------------------Bob Heile, Marlin Paulsen Adviser--------------------------------------------------Mr. R. K. Paxton It is the Photography Staff's job to record the school activities in pictures for the several school Publications. Handicapped this year because the expansion program temporarily left them without a dark room, yet these boys were always on hand to catch the picture when necessary. Much of their handiwork can be found between the covers of this book. QUILL AND SCROLL The Quill and Scroll is an International Honorary Society of high school journalists sponsored by Northwestern University. Membership is awarded to juniors and seniors who have 150 inches of published material in one of our high school Publications and who have done outstanding work in the field of journalism. Other requirements for membership include recommendations from three teachers as well as the Quill and Scroll adviser. The Sharon High Chapter is named for Drew Pearson, the noted columnist. The adviser is Miss Anna Grace Smith. 71 RADIO GUILD President_____________ Vice President-------- Secretary-Treasurer Adviser ______________ __________Bill Pancy ________George Greer ____Beverly O'Connor Miss Caroline Daverio The Radio Guild trains students in radio work. The purpose of this club is to improve speech habits and to acquaint the members with radio techniques for future vocations. Belonging to the Radio Guild is a profitable and enjoyable experience for those who don't mind a little hard work. Our local Radio Station WPIC cooperates with this group to the fullest extent in making the facilities of the station available to the students for instruction and experience. RALLIES Except for the Bonfire Rally, all rallies this year were held in the Auditorium because the new gym was not yet completed. In spite of the non-athletic environment, the rallies still were highly successful and full of enthusiasm. On September 23 a rally was held to pep up our football team for their game with Sharpsville. It served its purpose because we beat Sharpsville that night by a score of 20-6. On November 10 the Bonfire Rally was held on the practice field, followed by a snake dance. Featured speakers were members of the team and the coaches. Basketball rallies were under the planning genius of Miss Smith's Public Speaking Class, of Miss Daverio's Public Speaking Class, and the Senior Class. Of course no rallies would have been successful without the help of the Music Department and the Cheerleaders. 72 SCIENCE CLUB President---------------- Vice President___________ Secretary _______________ Treasurer---------------- Adviser ----------------- ___Douglas MacIntyre ___________Joyce Smith ________Joyce Mitchell _______Jerry Harshman Mr. Kenneth H. The science students have organized the club in order to further the knowledge of and stimulate interest in science. This year's program included informative talks by leading scientists in the valley, field trips, and films dealing with the progress of science. SECRETARIES A great deal of secretarial experience is gained by these girls through their work in the many school offices of Sharon High. Some girls work in the Athletic Office, some in the Guidance Office, while others serve the Industrial Education, the Music, or the Publications offices. The various duties of these girls include answering the phone, taking and typing letters, filing information, checking reports, and interviewing persons who may come to their respective offices. These girls are chosen during their Junior year and serve for two years. They deserve a lot of credit for the fine work that they do. 73 SENIOR PLAY This year’s Senior Play was a melodrama, Kind Lady, adapted from one of Hugh Walpole's stories by Edward Chodorov. The plot presented a clever group of imposters who move in on our Kind Lady, take over her house, drive off her servants, and completely isolate her from her relatives and friends. The entire production was under the supervision and personal direction of Miss Elizabeth McMullen. All members have a good time being active participants in the club and consider it an honor to belong. 75 STAGE CREW Foreman--------- Assistant_______ Adviser_________ ____Duane Wilson ----Leroy Heasley Mr. Andrew Franko Being a member of the Stage Crew requires a variety of talents and skills. These hard-working boys not only set up scenery for school and community affairs in our auditorium, but must also have the ability to visualize and build new scenery. They learn to operate the electric switches which control all lights of the auditorium. They also learn to place spot lights and replace all stage lights at each performance. At Christmas time you may see them hanging tinsel or trimming a tree on stage for the Christmas concert. Their hard work proves that the man off-stage is as important as the performer, even though he is not always seen. TRAFFIC SQUAD Co-Captains--------------------------Duane Schell, Richard Feile and Bob Pinlar Adviser------------------------------------------------Mr. Kenneth H. For these boys there is no such thing as remaining after school to await a ride because of rain or snow. They are out there on the sidewalk directing the students and traffic in all kinds of weather. As a reward for their work the boys receive letters when they are Seniors. 76 TRI-HI-Y-JUNIOR President ____ Vice President Secretary_____ Treasurer ____ Adviser_______ ________Julia Roberts Jacqueline Friednamer __________Betty Brown ____ Rosemary Walker . Miss Vernece Saeger The Junior Tri-Hi-Y is an organization which contributes in every way they can to charitable organizations and to the bettering of the community. USHERS AUDITORIUM Co-Captains-------------------------------Barbara Weinreich, Frances Wiley Chairman------------------------------------------------- John Freeman Advisers------------------------------Miss Ruth Filer, Miss Vernece Saeger The Auditorium Ushers have proved themselves a valuable asset both to the school and to the community. All decked out in their white blouses and black skirts, the girls have done a good job in assisting at student activities and community activities which were held in the school auditorium. Their quiet dignity in ushering people to the right seats added much to the formality of all occasions where they were called upon to serve. The customary suit and tie ensembles of the boys added another note of formality to such occasions, and their courteous and helpful attitudes as ticket takers were greatly appreciated. 78 USHERS SPORTS The responsibility of this group of students is to guide the large number of persons who attend our football and basketball games to their seats. Selected upon a volunteer basis from all classes, these students are required to learn the seating arrangement of both stadium and gymnasium, to be faithful in the performance of their duties, and to keep their scholastic average high in order to continue as members. The adviser to the group is Mr. R. K. Paxton. VISUAL EDUCATION STAFF The Visual Education Staff can be rightfully commended for the many visual aids they make available to the students of Sharon High. Recommendations concerning the adaptability of films to classroom work are made to the faculty after previews seen by this group. The Staff members set up and operate the projectors for the many different high school groups who request the advantages of visual education aids. This work helps to train the members in the care and technique of motion picture projection. The adviser is Mr. J. R. Marks. 79 Qootludl 1949 The second year of football under the tutelage of Head Coach Cy James proved to be a not too successful season from the standpoint of games won. With the assistance of A1 Barnes, Jim Provance, Kenny Reeher, Coach James consistently drilled the team on the intricacies of the short punt formation. During the few weeks of training before the opening kick- off, the boys worked hard and long to get into the best physical and mental condition necessary for top-notch performance. The regular seasonal play was highlighted by hard running and vicious tackling and blocking. Injuries to many of the players and the loss of games by close margins discouraged JIM PROVANCE Asst. The Battling Bengals gave their best for the sake of their school and their coaches. STOVER Faculty Manager of Athletics HaduOUi—.m9-1950 At the beginning of the basketball season it was prophesied that when the season was over the Sharon High Basketball Team would end up near the bottom in W.P.l.A.L. competition. Because Coach Pete Collodi had only one returning regular and was training his squad in several substitute gymnasiums, followers of the Bengals didn't expect too much from the team. Then after the first few preseason games, Tiger fans started to wonder. Their astonishment increased when Sharon upset highly-seeded Homestead to complete a pre-season schedule with a record of seven victories against no defeats. Most people now gave Sharon a good chance to win the title in Section III of W.P.l.A.L., one of the toughest sections in the whole state. Mr. Collodi had his starting five pretty well decided at the beginning of league action. These were Reg Fran-kowski at center, Duane Schell and Joe Bedich as forwards, and Vince Leon and Carl Raketa at the guard posts. The Tigers completed the first half action in Section III with a record of five victories and one defeat, the lone loss coming at the hands of the Farrell Steelers. With only one defeat the Bengels were still in the thick of the fight, striving to take over first place from unbeaten Farrell. During the second half play, Sharon was defeated by the Aliquippa Indians and again by the Night Riders of Farrell, and thus their hopes for 84 RcMieiJudL--1949-1950 the section championship were annihilated. The season's close saw the Tigers holding second place in Section III, with sixteen victories and three defeats in league competition. To those who participated Sharon High offers the sincerest congratulations. Sewall, 3rd B., M. Listiak, SS., B. Dillon, LF., T. Dancu, CF., G. Rosacker, RF., and starting pitchers D. Gathers and J. Harmon. The schedule and scores were: Sharon 6 Farrell 7 Sharon 0 Ambridge 7 Sharon 3 Beaver Falls 2 Sharon 3 Aliquippa 8 Sharon 5 Ellwood City 0 Sharon 9 Ellwood City 8 Sharon 8 Fnrroll 7 Sharon 3 Ambridge 5 Sharon 3 Beaver Falls 4 Sharon 5 Aliquippa 11 87 GOLF 1949 This year's Golf Team finished a booming season, winning eleven matches and losing only two. With Mr. Peter J. Collodi as their coach, this able squad of six won the Section 1 championship in W.P.I.A.L. competition, but lost to Penn Township in the playoff at Allegheny Country Club. Members of the team were Dick Foltz, who served as Captain of the Team, and Alex Vargo, Don Davenport, Bob Savko, Ed Walsh, and Ronnie Benedict. LEADERS CLUB This enthusiastic group of girls was organized to assist in the instruction of girls' gym classes in calisthenics, marching, drills, and dancing. They also referee basketball games and help with relay races. Although the girls were without a gym this year, two leaders each week taught gym classes at the Presbyterian Church. Selling programs at football games was another job they performed. This club, of which Miss Dorothy Weller is adviser, has proved to be of great value to all girls in the gym classes. 88 CHEERLEADERS Successful athletics in any school do not depend on individual players or on teamwork alone. That team has most chances for success which has a loyal, cheering student body backing it. Sharon has always had a loyal student body, and each year chooses from its number a group of boys and girls who can lead it in organized cheering. The cheerleaders begin work with the opening football game, go through the entire basketball season, and are not finished until the last baseball game has become school history. Their job is to keep up the school spirit, win or lose; and their work has been a credit to them and to Sharon High. Under the supervision of Miss Dorothy Weller our gang has really gone to town. Let's congratulate Anne Tomko, Mary Lou Kawana, Dorothy Lysohir, Maxine Vath, Paul Chadderton, Tom Barker, and Walter Swartz for their swell cheerleading during this year. SPORTS MANAGERS Perhaps the hardest workers on any athletic team, whether it be football, basketball, or baseball, are the Sports Managers. They are the boys who make sure that all footballs and basketballs are in the right compartments, the baseball bats are put away, and the sports equipment is not lost or misplaced. Errand boy, doctor, booster or friend—truly, theirs is not an easy job but one of responsibility and dependability. Football managers were Dick Harrison, Ronnie Simpkins, and Nicky Thomas. Basketball managers were John Cher-vinko and Bob Keryan. Baseball managers were Tom Barker, Mike Asafaylo, and Jack Persch. 89 9+ui x, to 6u AJtaesUUeSLi AUTOMOBILES SUPPLIES DAIRIES A Hum Motors, Inc ns Brainards Motor Sales Service 126 Cohen's Auto Parts .138 DeForest Buick Co .. .130 Eisaman Auto Sales 135 Eisaman Auto Wrecking 13S Gordon Ward Motcrs J50 Hoffman Motor Co 152 John B. Especially the ones who asked all the questions at the special assembly for Home Ec students on the 6th . . . What's up these days? Peanuts looking so haggard and worried and making all those long distance telephone calls????? . . . We hear that the snacks between rehearsals of Kind Lady are partially responsible for the excellent performances on the 13th and 14th. Congratulations to the entire cast, to Miss McMullen, its director, and to all the committees . . . 16th: The lack of a gym didn't stop the Senior Tri-Hi-Y girls from having a party with the Hi-Y boys in Room 107. From all reports, no me even missed the gym . . . We've been having our share of holidays this last week of February—a half day for Washington's Birthday, and half day on the 24th for a successful basketball season—Second Honors in Section 3 of the W.P.I.A.L. This is a familiar expression of both boys and girls of S.H.S. . . . Boys, if you're thinking about employing a full-time cook, here's a bit of advice: Get one of the Home Ec girls who helped with that huge bake sale on the 11th . . . Just the Seniors were allowed to make that 'long' trip to Youngstown by bus to see the Industrial Exposition this year on the 16th .. . Wow! Seems to be more Irish in S.H.S. on the 17th than on any other day of the year! . . . Laurels to Don Bastress and John Freeman who represented us at the model legislature in Harrisburg this month.
