l v 's, I 1 I I X -an , or be Great things in life cannot be achieved by taking the easy way. One cannot become great by dodging lifes, difficulties. It is only the brave, self-reliant spirit which survives and accomplishes the seemingly insurmountable tasks. Whether we meet the challenges of life face to face or run away like cowards depends on us. We Americans have had a splendid heritage handed down to us, a heritage which promises a great future. Our churches, homes, schools, industries, and govern- ment are the envy of the entire world. Only a courageous, determined generation of boys and girls will be able to preserve them. By keeping a clear head and disciplining themselves our future builders should be able to save the most vital and precious elements of our great democracy. It is a big assignment, but may they remember that glory comes by surmounting difficulties. S. N. CURRIER If a man empties his purse into his head, no one can take it from himf, To education falls the major responsibility of pre- paring citizens for the new and rather terrifying world of tomorrow. Since we aren't quite sure what the future will bring, the jcb of the schools is a difficult one. The hope of the world lies in the guidance and dis- coveries of its leaders in thought. To lead us to a brighter future, away from the paths of destruction, cur students must be trained to think clearly and wisely. From the first grade to the twelfth, our boys and girls must be taught the great beliefs of mercy, justice, truth, and tolerance. Only a whole nation of citizens inculcated with these ideologies can save us. C. M. MUSSER L History does not repeat in an age of change. Hence, we should look forward rather than backward. Imagine yourself driving across rough country in a veil of mist. Ycu would need to look forward with all the concentration possible. Would you spend your time and energy looking backward? We believe that students should be trained to look to the future as well as the past through education. Education unites the past with the present to bring about an understanding of today's problems. Our enemies in World War II demonstrated the power of education for destruction. Education can be an equally powerful force for peace. It can provide the knowledge, skill, and understanding that will enable us to solve the problems of tomorrow. A. P. WILDMAN
