They also are in charge of the employment of all school personnel and the budgeting of all school funds. The Superin- tendent of schools is advisor to the board. 6 l v 's, I 1 I I X -an , or be Great things in life cannot be achieved by taking the easy way. One cannot become great by dodging lifes, difficulties. It is only the brave, self-reliant spirit which survives and accomplishes the seemingly insurmountable tasks. Whether we meet the challenges of life face to face or run away like cowards depends on us. We Americans have had a splendid heritage handed down to us, a heritage which promises a great future. Our churches, homes, schools, industries, and govern- ment are the envy of the entire world. Only a courageous, determined generation of boys and girls will be able to preserve them. By keeping a clear head and disciplining themselves our future builders should be able to save the most vital and precious elements of our great democracy. It is a big assignment, but may they remember that glory comes by surmounting difficulties. S. N. CURRIER If a man empties his purse into his head, no one can take it from himf, To education falls the major responsibility of pre- paring citizens for the new and rather terrifying world of tomorrow. Since we aren't quite sure what the future will bring, the jcb of the schools is a difficult one. The hope of the world lies in the guidance and dis- coveries of its leaders in thought. To lead us to a brighter future, away from the paths of destruction, cur students must be trained to think clearly and wisely. From the first grade to the twelfth, our boys and girls must be taught the great beliefs of mercy, justice, truth, and tolerance. Only a whole nation of citizens inculcated with these ideologies can save us. C. M. MUSSER L History does not repeat in an age of change. Hence, we should look forward rather than backward. Imagine yourself driving across rough country in a veil of mist. Ycu would need to look forward with all the concentration possible. Would you spend your time and energy looking backward? We believe that students should be trained to look to the future as well as the past through education. Education unites the past with the present to bring about an understanding of today's problems. Our enemies in World War II demonstrated the power of education for destruction. Education can be an equally powerful force for peace. It can provide the knowledge, skill, and understanding that will enable us to solve the problems of tomorrow. A. P. WILDMAN JANE BROSIE World History Litt. B., Grove City College M. An almost veteran line was back, and the only trouble seemed to lie in the lack of experienced backfield men. In the first game of the season, traveling to Har-Brac, the Tigers were decisively swamped. Showing only the ability to fumble at will, the Tigers, who bobbled eight times, came out at the short end of a 25-7 count. In Sharon's first home tilt, entertaining the Stowe Stallions, a wet and soggy field added to the Tigers, woes, and once again it was the same story: Fumbles prove costly. Hence the Tigers came out on the short end of a 7-2 score. Against highly touted Scott High, Sharon pulled a sterling upset. Looking like champions, the Tigers had about everything. With Bill Sankey, senior full- back, pacing both offense and defense, the Tigers went on to their first triumph of the season. Final score 13-12. Against powerful New Castle, our Tigers dicln't have enough defensive power to stop Ne-Ca-1-li's speedy set of backs. Only bright spot on the Tiger side of the ledger was the play of Captain Gene Koss. Final score 33-0. Oil City was no match for the Tigers, although their defense proved strong within their 20 yard line. Bill Sankey shared the spot light with Junior halfback Johnny Busch and they collaborated to gain the victory. Final score 13-7. Against Punxsutawney Sharon flashed their most powerful offensive display of the year, running and passing almost at will. With Bill Sankey carrying the brunt of the attack, Sharon coasted to an easy victory. Final score 26-2. Ambridge,s red hot ball club came to town, and our Tigers almost pulled one out of the hat. After spotting Ambridge nineteen points, we came within one yard of at least a tie. Looking good for the Tigers was the line play of Captain Koss and Tackle Bob Fink. Final score 19-13. Came the annual clash with Farrell and our Tigers, though once again underdogs, battled Farrell on even terms throughout the game. With nine seniors in the starting lineup, the Tigers battled furiously. It was a game featuring out- standing line play. Standing out for the Tigers were Leo Smigel and Gene Koss. Final score 6-6. 76 SHARON HIGH BASKETBALL--1946 Sharon, with Peter Collodi back at the reins after an army hitch, had a rangy batch of boys ready for action, led by returning first string veterans Andy Butchko and Gene Koss. The Tigers' chances for the season looked quite bright. Sharon opened the campaign, with Koss and Butchko pacing the attack, by decisively trouncing Kittanning's fighting ball club. Score 43-17. The Tigers copped their second ball game, showing a powerful offensive display, topping Brentwood,s veteran ball club. Score 56-30. The Tigers journeyed to South Field House in Youngstown to meet Wood- row Wilson and once again came out on the long end of a 44 to 26 count. Mike Zvarich paced the Tigers to victory in his first starting assignment. Sharon took a trip to Greensburg and, in a rough and tumble clash, racked up its fourth straight triumph. The big gun in the Tiger attack was Andy Butchko with sixteen points. Score 32-26. Paced by Steve Garay and Andy Butchko, Sharon toppled Youngstown South for their fifth straight victory. Score 47-19. The Tigers met a tartar in supposedly weak Youngstown East and only a last quarter sprint saved Sharon from defeat. Score 44-31. Powerful Erie Tech came to town to threaten Sharon's victory string, but the Tigers, paced by Gene Koss, dropped the Erie boys. Score 39-26. Sharon flashed some of its best form in toppling the Donora Dragons in an exciting clash. Andy Butchko once again paced the Tiger attack. Score 43-38. In Sharon's first W. P. I. A. L. Section III tilt, the Tigers were dumped 39-31 by Aliquippa Quips. Reversing their form the Tigers with Butchko and Koss pacing the attack trounced New Brighton 46-21. Playing some of their most consistent ball of the season, paced by Andy Butchko, Sharon piled it on Ellwood City to the tune of 41 to 23. Sharon copped two decisive victories from Beaver Falls and New Castle by scores of 49-26 and 41-29 respectively. Andy Butchko and Don Bartosh led the Tigers to the victory. The Tigers ran up against Ambridge's high-geared ball club and went down to a 26 to 30 defeat. Ambridge's ability to sink fouls proved the measure of victory. Sharon got back on the winning trail and with Andy Butchko scoring 17 points, topped Farrell's Night Riders in a hotly contested battle. Score 36-30. In the most exciting clash of the season Sharon's Tigers overcame a seven point deficit to take the Aliquippa Quips by a 43-40 score. Once again it was Captain Andy Butchko who led the Tigers to victory. Sharon copped decisions from New Brighton and Ellwood City by scores of 46-16, and 45-29 respectively. The '1Battling Bengals topped Beaver Falls red hot Tigers by a 59-39 count with Captain Butchko tossing in 24 points. Sharon's Fighting Tigers came back into a tie for first place dropping Am- bridge, 26-25. Andy Butchko dropped in 11 points, including the winning goal with but 40 seconds remaining to play. Sharon really poured it on Farrell to notch the victory and gave a chance to play Aliquippa for the Section III Championship. Score 57-42. After beating Aliquippa in the playoff game 41-395 a protest was filed and the game was replayedg this time Sharon clinched the Section III Championship with a 39-31 victory. Against Waynesburg in a quarter final match at Beaver Falls, Sharon took a 41-36 decision from the scrappy Waynesburg Five. In a semi-final W. P. I. A. L. clash, Sharon's Fighting Tigers eliminated the Ford City Glassers. It was a sterling battle all the way. Andy Butchko paced the Tigers with 17 points. Score 41-38. Meeting the powerful Homestead Steelers in the W. P. I. A. L. finals, Sharon was eliminated 35-30. The Tigers showed plenty of iight though trailing 31-19 at the end of the third quarter. Her crib, high chair, little rocker, etc., came from Willsonls. Her mother's rugs, curtains and draperies That easy chair they all gave Dad at Christmas, and the adorable dressing table she got for her sixteenth birthday Now young Mr. Sn quite frankly didn't know or care where the chairs he draped his adolescent limbs over came from. All he knew about rugs was that he was alleged to track mud on them. But he knows Mom knows. Especially when it comes to making the most of a dollar. And of course she said Willson's. So to Willson's they come . . . true to family tradition of solid, substantial Willson furniture . . . true to their bud get with the aid of sound Willson values. A rosy, light-hearted adventure. But it's the staunch backbone of America as well. And Willson,s are proud to share in so many Sharon homemakings. J. M.
