'71 War Effort When we returned to our school rooms in September, we found that there were many ways in which we could aid our country in the war effort. Although most of us were too young to take an active part in the actual Hghting, we learned that there is much we can ilo, and we have been, doing it all during the school year. Shortly after school started we were asked to collect all the old scrap metal available. Soon most of the classrooms were practically bare, so far as the boys were concerned. They were out gathering up old stoves, tubs, automobile parts and a host of other things made of iron and steel. Later there were other scrap drives, including several for tin cans. Fats, silk stockings and paper were also collected and turned over to salvage committees. Seventeen and eighteen year old boys were organized into drill classes, which went through maneuvers every Wednesday during activities period. Captain Young was in charge of this preparedness program. Letters from boys who took part in these drills and later went into the armed forces, tell us that this preliminary preparation aided them greatly. Girls of Sharon High were not Lo be outdone by their classmates of the opposite sex. Several have taken an active part in the Civilian Defense program daily during the greater part of the school year. Senior Tri-Hi-Y girls sold war stamps and bonds at the local theaters and many others were enrolled in first aid and home nursing classes. Campaigns to collect books and records for use of the soldiers stationed at nearby Shenango Replacement Depot were carried on. Girls of the Senior Tri-Hi-Y obtained names and addresses of alumni in service and urged all students to write to these grads. Every Tuesday morning since September was war stamp and bond day. We took the dimes and quarters we formerly had been using for sundaes and movies and put them to work for Uncle Sam. A novel idea of the Art Department, Hlliryg in a Hjeepu with colored pencil, with each small space at a value of two dollars worth of stamps, made us all the more conscious of this opportunity to help our country. A nationwide contest, sponsored by the Columbia Press Association, resulted in out school selling more bonds than any other school in the country. Although one other school did better than ours on a percentage basis, we sold fiI6o,ooo.oo worth of bonds to lead the procession. As a result of this fine showing, our students were able to have a pursuit plane named for them. The name selected was Sharonls Flying Tiger. The Victory Corps was organized near the middle of the year. Divisions titled Air Service, Land Service, Sea Service, Community Service and Production Service met regularly to discuss phases of war work dealing with their respective branches. The Community Service group was especially active in the Name a Bomber campaign mentioned above. The Quill and Scroll Society published maps of Sharon and vicinity, to be given to soldiers from the Replacement Depot who were visiting in Sharon. Money for this project was solicited from Sharon High students only. The maps were issued to the soldiers at the U.S.O. centers and at the camp itself. The Masqiie and Gavel, speech improvement club, presented a program informing the student body of the meanings of insignia belonging to various branches of the Army. They also informed the students of the requirements for membership in the various divisions of the Victory Corps. Our fine band took an active part in the war effort also. On ia number of occasions they played at programs for boys leaving the valley for the army. They marched in several of the bond drive parades as well. The band was present and took part in several programs awarding citations to valley industries for their part in excellent production of needed war materials. Classes in radio communications, pre-Hight aeronautics and army office practice were placed in the regular curriculum. Gym classes stressed physical fitness, and long before the close of the school year, boys gym classes could be seen making use of our new obstacle course. Navy V-12 tests and Army tests were administered to boys, to determine possible material for officer training. We of Sharon High School have had a busy year, taking part in different war activities, but it has been pleasant. We have cooperated fully whenever we have been asked. We will certainly continue to do so. Hi-Y and Tri-Hi- YClubs Pllltllosh: To create, malnttiin and extend, throughout the School and Community, high standards of Christian Character. This splendid organization, organized in 1930, is one of which we may be justly proud. l'irst of the clubs was the Senior Hi-Y, followed two years later by the Senior Tri-Hi-Y. Since then new groups have beenu added until now we have six in Sharon High School. As the Purpose reads, the main purpose of the Hi-Y clubs is to develop high standards of Christian Character in our school and community. Other important purposes are to bring out and further develop qualities of leadership, and to provide for wholesome social activities. hfieetings are held weekly and consist of devotional, business and discussion topics. Mziiiy members obtain valuable experience as club officers, and most others, at some time, are named to chairmanships of project committees. The Y clubs were very active this year. All groups contributed money to the Red Cross and other worthwhile relief organizations. VVhen the Quill and Scroll Society needed money to publish maps of Sharon, for use of Shenango Replacement Depot soldiers, the clubs dug down into their treasuries and helped them Ollt. Nlembers of all Y groups took part in the Christmas assembly program, which consisted of Biblical scenes. During the inonth of Mai'cl1 all members participated in the annual YMCA Bible Study Contest. The SENIOR Hl-Y sponsored the animal Homecoming Queen ceremony and Home- coming Dance. Miisser announced, We will now go to the auditorium, we all thrilled at the prospect of our first assembly. Throughout the year the announcement of each new assembly brought a little more excitement than the last. ln the upper left picture on the opposite page, Mr. Howell, a Bohemian glass blower. is in the act of blowing out a long, thin glass bubble. It was one of the most original assemblies presented this year. Mr. Howell, assisted by his wife, produced a number of objects, of which we remember best the stork made from red glass, and the beautiful glass pipe. The girls can look forward to having their clothes made from glass such as we saw displayed on the doll. The picture in the upper right is of the Armistice Day speakers. Attorney Leo McKay related some of his experiences in the last war. Albert Acker introduced the speaker and Martlia Ann Stewart recited a poem. The middle left picture is of one of the rallies held in the gym. The First rally was given on September eleventh, in preparation for the game between Sharon and Erie Strong-Vincent. The boys on the football squad were introduced by Coach Stewart. They then presented a song, We Are the Team. This song was composed by the squad while they were at Camp Fitch, If it had not been for the able help of the cheerleaders, the rallies would not have been successful. They are the people who help work up enthusiasm for all athletic games. Notice that girls are on our cheering squad this year, for the first time. They did very well, too. The right center picture is a scene from the Christmas Program. The main theme was the portrayal of Christmas Carols in short tableaux. The Hi-Y's and Tri-Hi-Y's were the participants. The A Cappella Choir sang. Bill Duncan spoke at the next assembly, pictured in the lower left hand corner. Mr. Duncan, from Chevy Chase, Nlaryland, was the guest of Mr. Byctoft, who introduced him. He talked of the lives of great present day American men. All of the students enjoyed his message. The lower right picture shows Mi'. Osborne, authority on the subject of Australia. His talk was educational as well as entertaining. Mr, Osborne's descriptions and colored slides of Australia made us much more familiar with that far-off continent than we ever had been before. Mrs. Robert fNidaj Magidoff pictured the need for Russian Relief. She told of the con- ditions in Russia at the beginning of the war and also of the courage of the Russian people. VVe were all a little more war conscious when we walked out of assembly that morning. The boys, especially, will remember when Paul Brown, former coach of the Massillon High Tigers, spoke to us. We were given an inside story of the reasons for the marvelous success of his football teams. We now realize that it takes hard and diligent training to develop a winning athletic team. Seaman First Class Wyatt, survivor of the torpedoed aircraft carrier, Lexington, held us spellhound as he narrated his experiences on the Pacific. Seaman Wyatt urged that we and our families should buy war stamps and bonds to the limit of our abilities. Slim Williams, Alaskan adventurer, described his experiences over the route now fol- lowed by the great Alcan highway. His stories of cooking and living in the open, and description of the small villages in the North, were all interesting. George Ramsey, news correspondent, told us of war conditions throughout the world. He predicts final success for the Allied Nations. Dr. Nicholls, whistler extraordinary, and member of the Walt Disney Studio staff, gave an excellent performance. His bird calls were perfect. Before the assembly ended, he had the whole student body practicing with him. Another year has passed, and with it these numerous assemblies mentioned. We look forward to next year and even better programs. V n 5 d - 1 -.A, '3, H21 tw., K., x . ,y fyw A 4 typ.. 1,-2: 1 -.mm Q' .Th :gn-' . Basketball Season COACHES Peter Collodi Donald Moore Thrills and chills galore, wonderful victories throughout the season-to be followed by a heart-breaking defeat at the hands of our friendly rivals from Farrell. This is a picture of the 1942-43 basketball season. Peter Collodi, coach of the Tiger basketeers for the past six years, was called to the colors early in the season. His position was taken over by Donald Moore, previously assistant ro Collodi. While we all hated to see Pete leave, nothing could be done about the matter, and Dudey really turned out a team that clicked on all occasions. Ir was a season of which we can be proud. The Tigers, with only Ed Suita and Spike Stupka, co-captains, back from last year's great team, won I7 and lost only 2 games over the season. It took a red-hot Farrell team. that later came within a whisker of the state title, to eliminate the Bengals. The Tigers looked green in their first game but fought hard to defeat Beaver Falls 28-27. The next game was easier as the Sharon boys trounced Ursuline 49-12. After leading almost all the way our boys went down to their Hrst defeat at the hands of the powerful Warrt'1i Presidents 37-36. ln their next battle the Tigers came bounding back to defeat a highly touted New Castle five 36-26 in a rough game. Sharon had a breather in their next game as they trounced Brookheld 38-16. The Blue Devils of Sharpsville fought hard before giving in 29-12 o11 their home court. Mercer gave the Bengals a busy evening, also, but the County Seaters came out on the short end of a 32-25 score. Next the Sharon squad travelled to Greenville to defeat the Trojans 34-22. In their second meeting the Tigers were red-hot as they ran roughshod over Sharps- ville 54-14. Grove City offered little opposition and the Bengals added another to their string 36-17. The Hickory Hornets came to our gym but went home with only I4 points against Sharon's 41. A late rally fell just two points short as we lost a thrilling game to a fine Farrell team 26-24. Grove City was unlucky in getting the Tigers on the rebound and re- ceived another shellacking, 39-21. Greenville battled on even terms with the Tigers for almost two quarters but slipped behind and were snowed under 40-20. Hickory fared a little better on their home court, getting 21 points against our 45. ln their next game with Farrell, Sharon came fighting back after trailing at the outset and handed the Steelers a 36-23 trouncing. Wooclrow Wilsoti was no match for the Tigers and was defeated 41-20. ln their highest scoring game of the season, our boys turned back Mercer 64-30. ln closing their regular season the Tigers defeated an experienced Ellwood City team, 51-37. Then came the sur- prise ending. The Tigers were favored in the county play-offs but the Steelers had different ideas and took over the crown, 35-27, before a record-breaking crowd at South High Field House, Youngstown. The entire school and community extend congratulations to the 1943 edition of the Tiger Hoormen. Fighting players and fine coaches all went to make up a great season. Kneeling-Nemetz, Mgr. The Iunior Varsity, coached by Mr. Blaine Laycock, former Sharon High cage star, won eleven out of sixteen contests. Members of the starting lineup usually were Garay, Reynolds, Koss, lVIentrek, and Marsliall or Zipay. These boys, all of them Freshmen and Sophomores, will probably be the material from which varsity Tiger teams are made in the next several years. SEASON RECORD SHARON 29 BUHL CLUB .......... Almost every day in the early autumn, these boys could be seen running in the neighborhood of our school, under the watchful eye of coach Gerald VVasser. This year the season schedule was limited to two meets, both with Nleadville High, due to gasoline and tire shortages. The district meet usually held at Pittsburgh, also had to be canceled for the same reason. Tumbling Team XNith physical fitness playing a vital role in our war elfort, this year's tumbling class was of greater importance than in previous years. Tuesday and Friday activity periods found the grunt and groan class hard at work under the guidance of physical education director, Paul Hoskins. Matt di'ills, muscle-building exercises and parallel bar work all had a part in the group's routine. The tumbling team sponsored an exhibition in the gym, near the end of the school year.
